2007 singles - 70
2007 albums - 177

Hmmm, i realize the album turnout is higher, but i still figured we'd have a good 15-20% growth from the singles list since we have so many new boarders
theremin
Let me be the first to say, should have been higher.
Mitchell
Excellent start.

68 seems fine for singles poll, as long as a good number of them with large lists as well.
Duff.
Always puzzled by the popularity of the album poll over the singles poll. Singles poll is so much more fun. But I guess that's the way it goes in the world of elite music.

Death Cab For Cutie - I Will Possess Your Heart

(1311 Points, 11 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #70 (Hot 100), #6 (Modern Rock)

UK Chart Position: #85

Music Under Fire Review: First off, let me say that I was not expecting something 8:36 long and this is something most bands do not do since they want to get their point across for what the rest of the album sounds like. If I were to take anything from this song and make an album based on just this one song, I would stand by the fact that this album is not upbeat, nor is it going to be over the edge with poppiness or catchy hooks, like many bands do to throttle their stardom. Death Cab, having more than a following may just further showcase each instrument, which is something that has been overlooked on the course of their past two albums.

"I Will Possess Your Heart" would make me look so right if this were the case for Narrow Stairs. The song is really just your classic DCFC intrumental, like that in "Stability" from the Stability EP (which is their longest song - 12:22 to be exact). It only takes a mere four minutes and thirty-six seconds until we hear Gibbard chime in, yet the song still does not pick up.

I'll get straight to the point - you'll love this if you're a DCFC fan, but it is by no means better than FIVE of the songs on Plans. I'll even name them: "Soul Meets Body", "Your Heart Is An Empty Room", "Brothers On A Hotel Bed", "Summer Skin", and "I Will Follow You Into The Dark". For me, Death Cab's best songs have generally been around three and a half minutes.

I'm not quite sure the purpose of making this song their single, since it ranks up there with other songs I would put at the end of an album (this song falls second in their track listing), but I can appreciate the slowed down instrumentation they used, although it wouldn't surpass one of my favorites "Transatlanticism".

The song eventually picks up at 6:46, but alas, it is too long for me. Perhaps their plan is to throw everyone off with this song and leave the true gems on the album to be heard later, afterall, it IS the singles that are killing the artists, isn't it? Cough, Cough!

"I Will Possess Your Heart" may be the "Yellow" of Parachutes - 6.9 out of 10.

I went from initally loathing it to kind of enjoying it, so when you even the two out, #99 seems about perfect.

If this is how the list starts, I think I'm going to like the results.

Mystery Jets - Young Love (feat. Laura Marling)

(1316 Points, 8 Votes)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #34

Digital Spy Review: Mystery Jets were a bit too odd to be taken seriously on their 2006 debut, Making Dens. With their unhealthy fascination with prog rock, and one of their dads on guitar duty, they had many indie fans rushing for cover behind their Razorlight safety blankets. However, with new single 'Young Love', the band have ditched the prog waffle, replaced the old fella with the rather fetching Laura Marling and crafted a bona fide smash.

Based around Marling and Blaine Harrison's wistful tales of a night-stand, it features a fabulous array of edgy, alluring lyrics. Despite Blaine's amusing recollection: "Is that you on the bus? Is that you on the train? You wrote your number on my hand. And it came off in the rain," Marling's seductive and sardonic responses win out, as she croons: "You don't need eyes to see if someone's got a heart of glass." Boasting sublime harmonies and the sort of bouncy bassline The Kooks would mug their own mums for, it should turn Mystery Jets from indie oddities into chart sensations.

Lupe Fiasco - Superstar (feat. Matthew Santos) / Superstar (Remix feat. Young Jeezy and T.I.)

(1370 Points, 11 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #10

UK Chart Position: #4

B&S Online Review: As the Chicago-born visionary is showing with each new tune, the conscious hip hop crowd have a new hero.

Lupe joins the likes of Common and Talib Kweli in the eternal battle against mainstream hip hop’s material obsessions and imaginative subject matter vacuum.

The previous taster single from the upcoming ‘Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool’ album, ‘Dumb It Down’, was just a little too left-field and out there for many tastes, but ‘Superstar’ stands as a much more sensible choice of flagship single, blending Lupe’s characteristic easy vocal flow with a pleasantly lumbering piano-led beat, a soulful hook, and the odd sample and sound effect. Even Judge Jules played it on Pete Tong’s Radio One show recently!

Late of the Pier - Heartbeat

(1370 Points, 5 Votes, One #1 Vote)

US Chart Position
: n/a

UK Chart Position: #98

Clash Music Review: The Castle Donington group have lit up a pale, wane emotionally bereft British indie scene with a series of superb singles and a debut album that is by turns insane and utterly brilliant.

While their scenester clothes and oh-so-quirky dance moves may irk the indie purists, there is no denying that Late of The Pier have the tunes. “Heartbeat” opens like a lost relic from the 80s, all power dressing and Michael J Fox movies before taking a turn for the demented. With a sense of the operatic surely inherited from Freddie Mercury’s mic stand, “Heartbeat” explodes into a shrieking, writhing chant as catchy as it is confusing. A brilliant primer for one of the year’s best debut albums so far.

Adele - Chasing Pavements

(1395 Points, 7 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #82

UK Chart Position: #2

Digital Spy Review: Adele Laurie Blue Adkins must be feeling the pressure right now. Though her career to date comprises just one 7"-only single, she's received almost as much press coverage as that other mouthy Londoner with a big, soulful voice and oodles of attitude. To put the hype into context, it took poor Amy a couple of years to nab a Brit Award; Adele's managed it in a couple of months.

'Chasing Pavements', her first proper single, is a mellow, sensuous slice of old-school soul. Its teenager-in-love lyrics are fairly unremarkable, but Adele's voice is a revelation, steering the big, brassy chorus through its melodic twists and turns with consummate ease. In fact, as you realise the precise nature of that haunting emotion in her voice – bruised defiance, we'd call it - everything falls into place. Now that's what all the fuss is about.

Paramore - That's What You Get

(1398 Points, 8 Votes)

US Chart Position
: #66 (Hot 100), #36 (Modern Rock)

UK Chart Position: #55

allgigs.co.uk Review: It's been such an incredible year or so for Paramore. With the band members being of ages 17-23, it seems impossible that they could become Grammy-nominated. Lead singer 'Hayley Williams' was voted by Rock Sound magazines readers as most influential female, and even the band's guitarist 'Josh Farro' recently got in a confrontation with Hilary Clinton during her election campaign.

The single 'That's What You Get' is the fourth release from their second studio album 'Riot!' The song itself is typically Paramore. It features the usual pop-punk based guitar and drums, with the addition of some heavier riffs and beats compared to previous efforts on 'Misery Business' and 'Hallelujah'. Hayley Williams's vocals work well with the song, the inclusion of a catchy chorus makes it easy listen too. This has always been Paramore's biggest appeal and their fan base has soared because of their bouncy and catchy songs. 'That's What You Get' will never achieve the success that 'Misery Business' has had, but it's a likeable number and anybody interested in pop, punk or emo based music should have a listen.
