Related to the Wal-Mart thread....has anyone shopped at Steve and Barry's? I'd never been in the place until last weekend, whereupon I learned that EVERYTHING in the store was $7.99. Of course, I had to take advantage, so I bought a hoodie of my school (Ohio University, in case you care). This bargain obviously varied by the particular product, but my hoodie looks like it should cost $40 or so, at least. Anyway, is somebody going to confirm that I just encouraged slave labor in China or something? How else can this price be economically viable for the store?

Isn't it The Ohio State University?

Never heard of Steve & Barry's, but your query makes me wonder about the ethics of patronizing "Dollar Stores". You can get cheap food, household gadgets and somewhat decent dishware at some of the better ones.

Dammit, no. (I KNEW someone would think that.) There's OSU, then there's OU...smaller state school in the southeast part of the state, in Athens, OH. Not far from West Virginia. Mascot = Bobcats.

Aren't their colors like Green and White or something?
Yeah, Ohio U is in the Mid-America Conference.... I think.

Well, I just seem to recall all the former Buckeyes stating that they're from
The Ohio State University when they're introduced on Monday Night Football...which I'll never see again
ANYWAY, back to your cheap threads. I don't know Steve or Barry.

from what I know
the Dollar store buys stuff in bulk that didnt sell
they sometimes buy things by the pound or ton then actuall amounts
I don't know if I feel bad about thise
since these products were made for places like walmart and didnt sell if the Dollar Store didnt buy them they'd just end up in a landfill
I actually think buying things at the Dollar Store is like celebrating Wal-Marts few failures
wouldn't be surprised if Wal-Mart bought the Dollar store someday

They have a Steve & Barry's at Old Orchard (or at least they did the last time I was there). The quality of the stuff is pretty crappy, but some of it is good for what it is (I bought a zip up hoodie for like 5 bucks).
For example, my sister bought a fleece windbreaker that she thought would be good for jogging, and after she started sweating in it, she discovered that the fleece material was more like fiberglass insulation. Her skin got all irritated and she just tossed the jacket.

The worst quality clothing I've ever bought, by far. Looking back, $7.99 was too much for the shirt I bought that ultimately ended up being a dishrag.

I interviewed a dude last week who put that on his resume.

That's where I went. Agreed on the quality aspect for some of the stuff--they sell shoes that look like the soles are made of some light foam material that would simply break off or dissolve during an ordinary jog. Still, the hoodie I got looks pretty decent--thick material, stitched lettering. Certainly looks as good as most other sweatshirts I've had. Which makes me wonder why they're able to sell it so cheap.

yeah im pretty sure that their clothes are made by cripple children working in sweatshops and breathing in asbestos while getting paid a shiny nickel for every seventeen hoodies they make.
but you enjoy your discount hoodie and continue supporting terrorism or whatever it is that that endorses.

Steve & Barry's is great. We bought my son a bunch of clothes there when he went back to school last year. Really great and cheap.

Their jeans are nice.
I think the $7.99 thing is temporary, just to grab market share.

One opened up in the Chicago Ridge Mall like 2 years ago, got some stuff there. You pay for what you get in terms of quality there.
