Saturnalia was very good.

as a Lanegan & Dulli fanboy i gotta admit i was kinda let down by it...

not that i didn't enjoy plenty of it, but it was more like a 6.5/7 record when i'd hoped/expected an 8.5/9

To be honest, my only experience with Lanegan is through this album and the Isobel Campbell collaborations.

you should remedy that immediately!

Very nice, Paul.

As usual, I see I have a lot of learning to do. Without taking advantage of Spirit's thread.

Well, I loves me a challenge.
Mitchell
I think the record sales argument should be kept out of this thread. Even more so when it's wrong.

well it's not even an apt argument. By that logic McDonald's is the best food in the world.

Aw, man! You mean my food isn't supposed to sit as an undigestible lump in my colon for a day and a half?

What have I been missing all these wasted years?

re: Rajexico

Lindstrøm might do okay.

Don't know if Radio Scarecrow has a chance at top 50, but it's probably going to be in the upper reaches of 51-100.

True. I'm not enough of a Mitchell-style poll-watcher to have a very good sense of where things will land.
HRTX
It's pretty promising so far. Yeah, a shocker that Beach House was so low but I don't think it deserves to be much higher anyway... thread is going to finally make me check out Imperial Wax Solvent and Treny, two albums I've been idly meaning to hear since they came out.
James D
People who voted Black Dog generally voted pretty high so with this weighting system, it definitely has a shot.

Wow. Most of the best electronic albums of the year (Jacaszek, Bruno Pronsato, Move D) gone already.

Electronic-wise it's now mostly just a matter of waiting to see how high Radio Scarecrow can soar.

i still expect to see max tundra come up.

i'm a little disappointed osborne didn't get much attention. only two votes (at #4 and #8) for what i thought was a really impressive electronic debut.

this is going to be the most severe bottom 50 > top 50 ever, isn't it

Not if Torche, Elbow, Opeth or Genghis Tron make the top 50, it sure the hell isn't.

edit: Nice job Paul, as always. I like your use of opening quotes this time around.
Pavement Ist Rad
Opeth does not stand a chance in this poll.
James D
Hmm, wouldn't hold my breath for that. Harvey Milk is probably the only metal that stands a reasonable chance of getting anywhere near the top 40 since there were a quite a few #1 votes for it.

edit: paves otm

Wouldn't be surprised if Opeth misses out altogether, actually.

Nowt wrong with that.

I suppose I don't really think of PEBY when I think of electronic albums, but yeah, I hope it goes high.
Soundscape
I didn't vote Opeth very high..in other years I might have, I just didn't find WATERSHED to be that incredible or addictive. I question whether that may have impacted if it would have placed, but it'll be interesting to see the final numbers if in fact it may have.

The only thing I know and voted for so far (100-80): The Gutter Twins. I see them as kind of a darker, dirtier Dissociatives..the progressive rock tag has never been put onto them, but I feel they fall under the umbrella somewhat. But I can't claim to really care much for The Screaming Trees, altho I've never heard much Afghan Whigs..in recent weeks I've been a bit curious how similar the Gutter Twins work is to that stuff.

Calexico's the only other band to place so far I know, but I never checked out their new record.
velocity
Natasha Schneider has a decent voice...I might check out that Gutter Twins. Is it at all crunchy? Fast?

edit: I wasn't particularly into this year's Opeth either, but know some people voted for them. Any metal @ the top is better than none.
Rob Gordon
Only one thus far for me. Not complaining though because I rely on getting my truly underground turn ons from you guys. I have no time to stay that deep to discover.

Seems like a weird Top 100, so far, this year, with a bunch of albums that didn't really have much of the ol' board consensus/hype placing quite high.

I dig that Calexico album in the "sounds like a soundtrack to a modern Western" kind-of-way, but an genuinely surprised enough people heard/liked it enough for it to place in the Top 100.

Also, quite shocked that Lykke Li didn't crack the Top 50!

Tremendous job, thus far, Paul!
Asher Ford
Already in love with The Fall and Dungen records after 1 listen. Not huge on Move D yet, but... after a few listens I might be. This list always provides so many great discoveries.

No such thing as underground these days. Only internet. Finding a review for the latest Opeth is no more difficult than finding a one for Fleet Foxes.
simulated stereo
Happy to see Imperial Wax Solvent placed. Really should have been higher.

I would have included it on my list had I discoverd it earlier. Only one on my list so far is El Guincho and that one wasn't that high on my list of 50.
Easily Fooled
Kind of shocked Lykke Li placed so low. Verrrry pleased Dungen snuck in, as I didn't see a whole lot of support in the voting thread.
Pavement Ist Rad
One spot higher than Tio Bitar in 2007, too!

They're moving up in the world.

ditto. grabbed them both earlier this afternoon, and both are killer.

Treny is astounding me so far
Tongue-Tied
I'm pissed I missed the deadline.

Would have been some good votes for Move D, Opeth, etc.

and Alopecia was my AOTY. so yeah.

No matter how busy and fucked up life gets, I always make time for the EOY.

Cool start to the list. Man the cover of Visiter has got to be one of the worst this year.
Bleep Blop
re: electronic music discussion-- I think Convival is going to place. I saw that on a ton of lists, and it was pretty high on mine.

Though, there's a bit more exposed hype machine for the latter.

Lykke Li is WAY too low. Shame on the lot of yous.

Nice to see Dungen make the cut, even though nowhere near enough indie geeks are aware of just how good they've become.

Shame on me for sure. It's one of those albums that got lost in the shuffle a little bit, but I've spun it a few times over the past few days and enjoyed it more each time.

Co-signing Treny being astounding and the Dodos having one shitty-ass album cover.
Wolfgang
Youth Novels came about too early for me, think the singles were leaked in 07 even. But it's a good record, probably should have voted for it, but oh well.

1. I do not understand her appeal. Terrible

2. Absolutely.

i saw her open for el perro del mar and didn't like her set at all. which is weird, because in theory she plays the kind of music i usually love... sorry...
RabbiSchmoiley
No, Lykke Li is really, really good. I think if I could revote I'd put it in the top 20 and move out... whatever was 20, shit, I don't know. Also, woohoo for Mogwai.

Brett - Would you nail Santogold?
Uncle Remus
I'll have to see what she looks like ... but she's like sorta black, right? Like MIA? Probably not, but I'll give her a look see.

Oh hell nah
solace
Lykke Li's record had some amazing singles, and while i liked the whole thing, i don't think it made my top 20
Cinnamon P.
I can't remember my list but I'm sure I'm going to enjoy 70-50 alot more than 20-1.

Just a humble request, make of it what you will.

Here you go - new thread.

fine start to the list. just goes to show that 2008 was really a great year for music!
BGwaves
Paves, Raj and others interested,

Electronic albums that still could place:

Cut/Copy - dont really endorse this one, but it is dance/electronic
Luomo - i saw this on a bunch of lists, but not high, so who knows... I placed it at 17 on my list.
The Black Dog - possible top 50 rite hur
Lindstrom - same hur
Hercules & Love Affair - same hur

I could b forgetting others that I thought of last night, but i think these will still place, maybe not top 50, but somewhere.

These 'indie dance' albums are sure to place high:

Hot Chip
MGMT
empire of the sun (maybe)
