SOMB Says: The time is 7:45pm on New Years Day and I’m sitting at my desk feeling pretty delicate from the night before, trying to muster an ounce of creativity to write this blurb. It’s OK though, since I have The Black Dog –
Radio Scarecrow to nurse me through this rather uncomfortable period in my otherwise hugely enjoyable week.
I guess
Radio Scarecrow is quite bleak when you assess the album as a whole. It’s all very stripped down, all very minimal. I’m sometimes like “hmm… this really isn’t what I want to listen to right now” when on some of the more glitchy/harsher tracks. But invariably what happens next is that The Black Dog introduces an otherworldly bass line or a synth melody which could make even the most hardened music atheist shed a tear. Completely transcendent life affirming shit, right there.
I was in airport the other day queuing at security and I was listening to this album (amazing headphone album btw). I could see on the screens that my plane was already boarding and would be leaving in 30 mins, yet the queue still seemed pretty long. People were cutting ahead of me, couples were arguing, children were running around unsupervised etc. I’m sure most of you are familiar with this situation. Yet, amidst all this I was pretty damn relaxed. After all, in a couple of hour’s time I would be back in my flat and in a days time I would be celebrating new years with some damn good friends. Pretty sure that in this situation,
Radio Scarecrow acted as a sort of catalyst for my brain to have such happy and calming thoughts. It was just one of
those musical moments we music listeners tend to have from time to time. One of those moments where you realise the sheer genius of the sound going into your ears.
So, whilst on the surface
Radio Scarecrow might appear to be quite a dark and gloomy piece of electronic music, once you start to appreciate the subtleties which are absolutely ridden within this record, joy and happiness will eventually ensue.
Great album. -
