I don't know about conservatives but Hollywood does treat people with albinism poorly. As someone with this condition I have to say I have been upset by some movies/TV shows. For example that movie "Powder" just made my blood boil. mad.gif

Crease, the politically correct term is "person with albinism". dry.gif

But yes I am an albino, been one since birth. laugh.gif

Wow. So, chromosomally speaking, (and I ask this will all respect and acknowledging the peculiar way we think about race in this country), what race are you? Like if you had to put it down on a census form or something like that, which box would you check.

Also, apart from sensitivity to UV (and what I would imagine is heigtened risk for various forms of skin cancer), are there other health issues that are unique to 'persons with albinism' (that's going to be the last time I go PC, as it reminds me too much of Steve Albini)?

Ok, thx in advance.

Chromosomally speaking I am Black since both of my parents are.

My biggest health obstacle (aside from a few extra pounds) is my poor vision. By the numbers I am considered legally blind. I think my vision is at 20/200 or something like that. I tend to sunburn very easily which means I'm indoors most of the summer months. Once again why do I live in Texas? HA! My first year here I got a pretty bad sunburn in March. ohmy.gif

Heath cissues can vary from person to person. Some people just have minor vision issues to complete blindness.

Here's a good resource website that has a ton of information if you want to know more.

I'm always amazed by all the coloration diferences among Albinos, I was friends in grade school with a pair of Albino twins who had the powder white hair and super pale blue eyes. I guess that coloration as light as that is less common in blacks than in ofay's like me?

I remember they both needed coke bottle lens glasses by the time they were 8, after a while the vision problems were more noticeable to me than the coloration.

Albanism is an autosomal recessive disorder, but there are multiple forms of albinism, from occular to total, so the chromosomal location is different between types. The net affect is generally the same however, a mutation in the gene coding for either a pigment protein or a protein used in construction of a pigment causing it to develop into a non-funcitonal protein, hense no protein.

Here's quiet a few types with more information.

And so, musicgurl, if you have children with a non-albino, then am I correct in assuming that the odds are astronomically high that you will have non-albino children?

This thread goes to show that something good CAN come of FNC programming. Fascinating stuff, this albinism (there, I said it again).

On the downside, are you steeling yourself for 'The D'avinci Code' movie? Another homicidal albino in that tale.

Is that all the Fox News Report gave? Please, that's basic info from any basic highschool freshman biology course. Trust me I know!

Bean, you'd be surprised how many adults have NO IDEA about albinism or recessive genes or any of that stuff. A family friend has an albino son and when he was born, one of the nurses at the hospital said he was born that way because of the radiation from the ultrasounds she has during her pregnancy. WTF? I've heard people say even crazier stuff though in my life.

Crease, I'm no Mr Science but I do believe that it's true the chances are good I'd have non albino children if the father is not an albino.
