That Portishead picture is hilarious.

Kanye going to win this in 2009 as well. Clearly a hard pressed battle for artist of the 00's with The White Stripes, Wilco, A Fire and Radiohead is due soon.

except Kanye is no where near in the same league as those 4 bands.

You're right. He's better.

I was gonna say something, but you pretty much got it dead-on.

Eh. This debate will be worth it in a year's time. I'm not gonna bother.

Glad to see the Last Shadow Puppets at #2 for best cover. Prolly would've been #1 if I'd voted in these misc. categories.

I was hoping Martha Wainwright would make the top 10. If you and I had voted, I guess, it might've made it.

Umm, try his first two albums, and then the new one if you feel like challenging yourself.

Or you could just lick the rock canon's nuts some more.

You're thinking of Funeral.

out of the context of the record... i'm not a big fan of In The Backseat or Kettles, but as a whole those songs are essential to the flow imo.

Yeah, Backseat is filler. Maybe Une Annee Sans Lumiere too. Everything else is great.

If you consider "Gone" filler, than I will no longer continue this debate. You just lost.

edit: I'm actually gonna stop hijacking this thread. That Mae Shi version of See U again rules.

Someone explain to me Kanye's appeal. I get it if you like the egomaniac caricature persona, but I don't understand his appeal as a musical artist. What has hip-hop gained from his participation?
Duff.
For one thing, he's got a phenomenal ear for music. He knows how to make a hook whether speeding up samples or commissioning Fiona Apple's producer for piano and orchestral elements. For another, while he may not be a skilled rapper, he has his own style that remains fresh, urgent, and captivating. You allude to his ego, which he certainly has (at least had) plenty of, but it's just one side of him, a side he shares with most of our beloved stars of rock and hip hop. But even at his most arrogant, in a second he can flip humility and vulnerability. There are very few rappers out there willing to mine their emotional depths the way Kanye has and continues to, and one of my favorite musical moments of the decade is at the end of Through The Wire, rapping about his life-threatening accident and recovery, where he declares "I'm a champion." Still goosebumps.

But even if you don't believe that, even if you don't like him as a person or an artist, it's hard to say there's much about the guy that is typical in other hip hop artists. Dude's an original, and he's brought a real creative streak to the genre that's crossed over majorly.

One of the finest of the decade.
spiritofeden
i don't find Kanye to be all that original. at all.
Duff.
Expound.

worst description of Jon Brion ever.
spiritofeden
what has he brought to the hip hop table that wasn't already done before him? Dizzee Rascal, Spank Rock and Dan The Automator are all leaps and bounds more original then Kanye.

he can create great beats, thats for sure. jay z is just much better at rapping over them.

he also has yet to release and album thats solid all the way through.

kanye is dope and a highly skilled rapper.

there would be a massive void in modern mainstream pop culture if he wasnt out there doin' his thing.

Then we're in agreement.

as long as we are agreeing on the fact that he is no where nears the caliber of Radiohead, The White Stripes, Wilco or Arcade Fire.

Agree to disagree, but Kanye reminds me too much of Puff Daddy's monotone delivery that the masses seemed to eat up while spoon fed.

Duff.
I mean even asking what the appeal of Kanye West is in 2009 as if there haven't been oceans of ink spent on the subject.
