i almost started a thread on this yesterday and then got lazy and complacent

i'm really kicking around going down there for SXSW this year. i just need to see if anyone else is interested in going and if not, if i can crash on my friend's cousin's floor for a few days.

i will be there.

we're putting on a day party on Wed the 18th at the Creekside Lounge (7th & Red River, right between Emo's & Stubbs) as well. i'll post more details as we have 'em

have they announced who the 'big name' will be for this year? doesn't that come soonish?

I saw them a few months ago and liked them just fine.

I'm seeing flights from London out the 15th returning a week later for £330. I'm in Egypt that week anyway but next year I might try and wangle a work trip to Housten the week before.

yeah, this is the one that caught my eye.

if i'm still unemployed in march, i will probably go to this again. sxsw 2007 was probably both the most fun and most exhausting four days of my life.

If you're looking for some good lesser-known bands, check these three out.

Steve Marriott died in 1991... too late for any good _____ Faces band.

I'm gonna try to convince some friends to road trip it to this. With minimum knowledge of what to go see. Black Lips, Golden Boys, Oh Sees, River City Tanlines, I'm sure some more I'm interested in. Just not up on the scene too much lately.

i'm not sure i've ever known a non-industry person who's bought a full pass. my advice would be to wait until showcases are announced, decide what looks best each night, and then buy tickets for those specific showcases.

don't buy a pass. only people who buy passes are rich folk and people whose work is paying for it.

buy a $180 wristband, gets you into everything as well, just have to wait in line (i got into every single thing i tried for last year with one)

its actually a conference pass so you get all the stuff that goes along with it

You really don't HAVE to have a wristband. I'm a local and I can easily fill my schedule with RSVP shows. Nights can get a bit tougher to see the good shows but day time can be amazing. Last year I saw Tokyo Police Club and Andrew Bird on the first row of an empty venue with nothing more than a free RSVP. Half the time the booze/food is free as well. I've spent a lot of time searching RSVP parties and so far the only one I've found is:

More are certain to come, please share if you find anything worth RSVPing to! If you are from out of town I can understand the security that a wristband would offer, but with enough luck, RSVPs can go a long way and if you get there to late, even a wristband wont get you into a full venue.

What are the muse-see's above? Lots of comparisons that Im intrigued by, but definitely have to whittle this list down some more for actual shows I can hit.

the official showcases kind of blow imo... there's maybe 2 showcases where there's more than 2 acts i want to see on the bill. gonna do a lot more venue hopping this year :/

I'm surprised that for you the norm is a bunch of acts you want to see at one showcase. Less than once each year am I interested in more than one or two acts on any bill.

So to address your question, Robbie, venues often fill to capacity, but then a significant number of people leave between acts (90% of which run on the same schedule). How much you can move around depends on (1) whether you have a badge, wristband, or plan to pay a cover; (2) how popular the acts are that you want to see; and (3) how large a venue it is that you want to get into.

well this is only my second year, but last year there were plenty of showcases that i liked 3-4 of the 6-8 acts (off the top of my head, the Billions showcase w/ Basia Bulat, Foreign Born, Constantines, & Vampire Weekend), and The Whigs, Yo La Tengo, & My Morning Jacket show didn't suck either.

Ah. Well, of course, everyone's tastes and experiences are different, but don't be surprised if your future visits are more like this year's than last's (at least that's how it has worked for me; this will be my eighth year). With so many artists playing at the same time, I think odds are against a person's first or second choices for any given hour all being at the same venue.

I've barely looked through thursday night, but there are a TON of showcases I would want to hit.

Emusic looks cool. The Parish has a killer lineup. N.A.S.A & Talib Kweli are on different lineups.

I am a big proponent of day shows, but am very close to picking up a wristband this year.

there aren't many good showcases of established acts (maybe the Decemberists and M Ward ones aside) but there are loads of ones of upcoming acts I'm excited about.
