Do you consider Styx as Prog?

Here is an article that gives us the correct answer to that question:
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseact...mp;swapped=true

I'd call it prog pop

Did you get that from the article?
wink.gif

didn't read it.

That's interesting, because that is the conclusion the article makes, that they are 'ProgPop"--not a very common term.

Yeah, I thought I just pulled it out of the air. Honestly. Well, looks like it's becoming more common.

Maybe you should trademark it before someone steals it from you. So did you end up reading the article though?

Hmmm. I tried that 1st video, and I really couldn't separate it from Fall Out Boy (mind you, I haven't heard much of that band either...but the song seems like a desperate try for MTV/radio exposure there...)

The second one...much like Mars Volta without the weirdness. I have tried time and again to enjoy Mars Volta, but they just seem so straight-faced about being weird that they are unapproachable (and you probably know how I am about weird music!)...and the vocals irritate me more than C&H's or Geddy Lee's. Seems like C&H are a safer middle ground between Mars Volta and Rush. Not something I necessarily want to invest a lot of time or money in, but enjoyable for some good listening. If I have a chance to scope out an entire album for its conceptual themes, I'll give it a shot. Thanks guys.

<Soundscape will appreciate this suggestion>

Forget Coheed & Cambria. If you're looking for something in the same vein that is a bit more interesting, check out 3. I actually saw C&C live (granted, I walked out after like 2 or 3 songs, as I was really there for Baroness) and they were DREADFUL. On the other hand, 3 put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen.

You might also try Opus Dai......
Soundscape
yeah 3 are good, and many prefer them to Coheed, but they definitely excel in concert. WAKE PIG and THE END IS BEGUN are both solid albums.

Very impressive album, and I'd say the 1st unheard-of/curveball of the year for myself. The cello and dynamics work throughout the whole thing. Reminds me a bit of how I got so into The Stiletto Formal last year, although now playing that disc today, I don't foresee the long term addiction. Still, call it best new indie-prog album of the early year. Drop date is March 23rd.
velocity
Something that was posted in the Metal thread but seems like a better fit here, is the Arusha Accord's EP, Nightmares of the Ocean. For some reason they remind me of Laundry, but with stronger vocals.
Soundscape
Arusha Accord are sweet. Certainly progressive in many ways. Experimental..similar to SiKth.
velocity
Yeah, you mentioned SiKth in the other thread too. Now that I know it's not sludge, I'll check them out. Really enjoying Arusha Accord.
Tongue-Tied
Porcupine Tree is very good. Love all those bass parts.
Soundscape
a new Porcupine Tree LP is expected to be released in 2009. Likely in the Fall.
Backslash M Forwardslash
As per usual, I posted this to the Metal Thread first, but it is likely to be appreciated by this crowd much more than the metal thread crowd.

My god I love Stinking Lizaveta! New album is being released very soon. For those not familiar, the closest comparison might be a heavier Earthless.... Being that Irepress has added vocals, this might be the Instru-Metal release of the year for me. Unless Dysrhythmia puts something out, of course.

Yes Bassist Chris Squire Hospitalized

before the other night in Houston. The 2nd show in Houston and the show last night in Dallas have been postponed. He had a blood clot, I guess, based on what some people have posted online.

Hope Chris gets well soon...this quite likely is the final Yes tour for reasons like that sad.gif

DREAM THEATER’S “PROGRESSIVE NATION 2009” TO TOUR NORTH AMERICA IN JULY/AUG WITH SPECIAL GUESTS ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA, PAIN OF SALVATION AND BEARDFISH

New York progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER will take their PROGRESSIVE NATION tour back on the road for its second incarnation with a run through America and Canada in July/Aug 2009.

In addition to a headlining set by DREAM THEATER, this year’s package will feature the outstanding musicianship of ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA as well as two incredibly talented imports from Sweden: PAIN OF SALVATION and BEARDFISH.

PROGRESSIVE NATION was created by DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy and its successful inaugural run in 2008 also featured OPETH, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and THREE.

Portnoy once again hand-picked all of the bands for the 2009 bill based on their diversity and musicality. He comments: “This year’s lineup is so exciting for me. Every band is bringing something very unique to the package to create an incredibly well rounded musical experience. I am just as excited to be watching all the bands from the side of the stage as I am to be performing with mine in the center of it!”

Fresh on the heels of his Grammy win, Dweezil Zappa is pleased to announce his plans to join forces with Dream Theater as part of the Progressive Nation 2009 tour: "It's no secret that I started ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA with the intention to diversify and expand the audience for my father's music. I figured I'd probably have to do it one concert at a time. Playing with DREAM THEATER on the PROGRESSIVE NATION tour is a great way to accomplish that goal. Music fans who are seeking something to challenge their senses should definitely consider attending this great bill."

Portnoy adds, “It is an absolute honor for me to have ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA on board. Frank Zappa is one of my all-time biggest heroes and his music practically invented the term ‘progressive’. Dweezil is doing an amazing job carrying on the tradition of his father’s daring spirit and like his dad, has surrounded himself with a band of jaw-dropping, incredible musicians”

Sweden’s PAIN OF SALVATION will bring their unique brand of cutting-edge progressive metal to PN09. Vocalist/Guitarist Daniel Gildenlow comments: “We are truly very happy to be part of the PN09 tour, and to be back in the States again and bring all the sweat and flesh to our music and our well deserving American fans. We feel honored to have been asked.”

Gildenlow also joked, “Actually, Mike has been on our backs now for two years in what we believe to be a personal campaign, bordering on harassment, to make us come over. So when he asked us about PN09, it was a joy to finally be able to say yes. And if Mike didn't give up on us, then hopefully America hasn't either.”

Vocalist/Keyboardist Rikard Sjöblom of BEARDFISH is equally excited: "When we read on a website that Mike Portnoy had our album "Sleeping in Traffic Part 1" among his favorite releases of 2007, we just couldn't believe it and we were really happy about it! And now we once again gasp for air since we've been asked to join PROGRESSIVE NATION 2009 together with DREAM THEATER (one of the biggest bands in this genre today!), PAIN OF SALVATION (hey, fellow Swedes!!!) and ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA (being a HUGE Zappa fan myself, I think this is really cool!). Since we've only played the US once before we simply can't wait to come over and rock out!"

PROGRESSIVE NATION will be the first North American tour for DREAM THEATER in support of their newest Roadrunner Records release which is slated for a June 2009 release.

well the big draw for this Tour is Pain of Salvation to be honest. They've NEVER toured the US, and the 4 festival appearances they did hear were 5+ years ago. Beardfish are somewhat of an unknown, and they've yet to tour the States as well. So people going to this, likely are going for those 2..esp PoS, rather than DT and ZPZ just due to the fact both of them tour regularly here.

there's a lot..trust me. Someone even called up Eddie Trunk's radio show a few years ago requesting them to tour with DT. I'm not saying people aren't going FOR DT and ZPZ, obviously that's a draw, but PoS have a following in the States and this being their 1st tour here will pull in a lot of people who know them, who have wanted to see them, but never have been able due to that fact. There's also many people who aren't DT fans who are into them..or who used-to-be DT fans who are still PoS fans..trust me, I've encountered dozens and dozens of them.

I'm not saying the majority of the crowd would be going for PoS..but I'm saying the fact a good chunk of people will want to go to this based on the fact they have never seen PoS live.

That Progressive Nation bill looks utterly incredible - I feel really happy for those in the US who'll get to go.

Speaking of umbrellas,
here in Nashville we have this band called Umbrella Tree.

http://www.myspace.com/umbrellatree

I like "Souls Are Warm Like Eskimos."

I am REALLY digging this band. I found their 2008 disc "The Church & the Hospital"

ooh..not at all disappointed on 1st impression here. They share qualities with some of the Indie/Psych-Pop bands like The Jealous Girlfriends and The Ebb and Flow, as well as the epic piano-driven nature at times of Wolf Parade. But not having it become too lengthly..much like a group like Big Fresh. Less-is-more.

Gonna have to spend a lot more time with it, but I enjoyed more or less the whole thing. The piano and male/female vocal arrangements worked really well.

I posted this the other day on rateyourmusic, and since I'd probably say it's gone up. 1 band they also remind me of a bit is the Chamber/Experimental band Jared Micah & Hats with the religious element..or spiritual..but it's not in-your-face.

Thanks again for this suggestion. I really want to check out their previous disc too now.

I think you're confusing the dedication of a fan base with its size. Not saying PoS doesn't have its fans, but I think that the fan base just happens to be a VERY dedicated one, rather than being large.

Relayer and Drama by Yes are the ones I keep going back to. Yes did amazing things when they had new blood in the band, freaking out the established guys. Pat Moraz, Trevor Horn & Downes, and Trevor Rabin. Those moments were good for Yes.

http://www.spin.com/articles/exclusive-album-preview-mew

*****Experimental Danish alt-rockers Mew, who broke through two winters ago with the U.S. release of their album And the Glass Handed Kites, have wrapped sessions on their fourth studio album. Recorded primarily in Brooklyn last summer and mixed in New York City, the as yet untitled album is on target for a June 2009 release.

According to singer Jonas Bjerre, the biggest change for Mew this time around was keeping their recording timeline down to a minimum. "We were in agreement when we started writing this record, promising ourselves, 'This is not going to take three years to make. We need to work faster,'" Bjerre tells SPIN.com.

The band also moved away from the continuous manner in which Kites was mixed, where one song basically bled seamlessly into the next. "The last record we did was like one long thing, and I love that about it," Bjerre says. "We didn’t want to do that again, we wanted to have separate songs. I think it’s like a counter reaction to what we did last time."

And while the music might not always reflect it, Bjerre says this new material is a bit more upbeat, content-wise. "Oftentimes, even if the song’s not happy, the lyrics are," he explains. "I think that this record’s probably a bit weirder in some ways, but also there’s some really very clear stuff."

Before heading back across the pond, Bjerre played two freshly mixed songs from the album for SPIN.com.

"Cartoons and Papier Mache" is a challenging, five-minute opus that launches headlong into a throbbing, percussive workout, layered densely with aggressive, metallic guitar strums and bass bursts. But later, the band deconstructs the frenetic arrangement, and the song winds down into a gorgeous, multi-part harmony with vocals from Bjerre and guitarist Bo Madsen swirling about from channel to channel.

While songs containing diverse, almost incongruous elements are nothing new to Mew, "Cartoons" takes that formula to a new level. "It was two different songs and kind of came together into one," Bjerre explains. "It used to start with a little piano thing, but we felt like we've always done that, starting really quiet and then building." So, instead, it's almost as if they've inserted a loud bridge at the song's outset, and closed with the quiet build-up.

Where "Cartoons" is complex and densely arranged, the second track Bjerre played -- tentatively titled "Beach" -- is the polar opposite, a concise, sub-three-minute song that's the most straightforward song Mew has ever recorded, and doing so definitely took the band out of their comfort zone. "One the reasons we make music and what we think is exciting about making music is to do new things and put ourselves into places where we don’t necessarily feel safe," Bjerre says. "['Beach'] is a little bit like that."

While all the usual machinations take place that precede an album's release, Bjerre is back in Denmark working on another essential element of the Mew concept: his hand-animated visuals that accompany the live show, which often contained different animals that lip-synced along to the band's performance. "I think I’m going to keep a lot of the characters and make them look a lot older," Bjerre says of his three-month animation process. "Because our music sometimes is a little bit complex, the visuals help keep the focus, to draw your attention to a few details that you might miss out on."

Bjerre says the band hopes to play some live shows in advance of the album's release, but no firm plans have been announced.*****

March 26th 2009

DREAM THEATER TO TAKE THEIR “PROGRESSIVE NATION 2009” TOUR TO EUROPE / UK IN THE FALL WITH SPECIAL GUESTS: OPETH, BIGELF AND UNEXPECT

New York progressive metal veterans DREAM THEATER will take their PROGRESSIVE NATION tour overseas for the first time with a run through Europe and the UK throughout Sept, Oct and Nov 2009.

PROGRESSIVE NATION founder and mastermind, DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy, once again hand-picked the bands based on musicianship, originality and diversity…not necessarily by popularity and marquee value. He comments: “After the excitement of putting together two very cool PROGRESSIVE NATION packages for North America, I knew it was time to bring the concept overseas and share some of these other great bands with our amazing fans throughout Europe and the UK”.

Joining the tour will be DT’s tourmates from PN08 (and Roadrunner Records labelmates), the legendary OPETH from Stockholm Sweden. Vocalist/Guitarist Mikael Akerfeldt was excited to partake in another PROGRESSIVE NATION experience: "Once my man "The Port" suggested they're going to bring PROGRESSIVE NATION over to Europe, I more or less begged him to get us on it, haha! We had such a great time doing it in North America and it did many great things for us as a band. It's fair to say that I can't wait to get going with this one. It will be a blast, believe me!!”

Los Angeles band BIGELF will bring their unique brand of psychedelic, progressive hard rock to PN09. Vocalist/Keyboardist Damon Fox adds: "When I first met Mike Portnoy, I felt like we were cut from the same cloth, a brother from another mother. We could talk rock & roll for eons (we probably will on tour, hell yeah!). Being added to the PROGRESSIVE NATION tour feels like the planets have aligned for us and the elves have finally come home to Rivendell. The mentality of Dream Theater and PROGRESSIVE NATION reminds me of a quote from the great Willy Wonka, "There is no life I know to compare with pure imagination. Living there, you'll be free if you truly wish to be..." We eagerly await our return to Northern Europe and on a special note, we have never performed in England. This has driven us completely mad over the years. We are just brimming with passion and excitement to be able to bring our music back to the homeland which has inspired us so deeply.”

Opening the show each night will be Canada’s UNEXPECT who will surely blow people’s minds with their insane musicianship and avant garde style of extreme progressive metal. Guitarist Syriak had this to say: "How can we rationally express that crazy excitement we feel about this awesome turn of events…Upon getting offered by Mike to be on board this amazing prog vessel, we accepted at once to participate and add our own mad musical touch to the crew! Being part of the European leg of PN09 is an extreme honor for us and playing in company of such talented musicians shall be a true and heartfelt enjoyment! See you all on stage guys!! "

The European leg of PROGRESSIVE NATION will follow on the heals of the North American version of PN09 which will run throughout July & Aug 2009 in the US and Canada featuring DREAM THEATER, ZAPPA PLAYS ZAPPA, PAIN OF SALVATION and BEARDFISH.

PROGRESSIVE NATION’s successful inaugural run throughout North America in 2008 featured OPETH, BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME and THREE.

A festival and headlining run of Europe in June, followed by the two PN09 tours will be the first treks across the globe for DREAM THEATER in support of their newest Roadrunner Records release “Black Clouds & Silver Linings” which is slated for a late June 2009 release.

Looks like not only will TMV be touring this summer, their next album is also likely to be released. Various sources online indicate that LP5 will be released June 16, 2009.
We expect an official announcement one of these days.

In the meantime, if you want to find out about the likely title and what others think, check out this topic on our forum.

the forum post pretty much confirms it. I will listen, but I just wish they could get someone to throw out all the splash and crash cymbals Pridgen uses..or at least find a way to mix them so they don't clip every 5 seconds. And tone-down the mix overall. BEDLAM had some nice songwriting on it, but it became moot for me cuz how unlistenable the production was. We'll see I guess if this is any different.

I have pretty much no expectations for this. When both Bedlam and Amputechture came out I thought they were awesome but all I hear now is Omar repetetive solos and his lame production (yes I know he produced FTM also, my favorite record of all time.) And when Jon Theodore left the band I was kind of worried, then I heard/saw Pridgen and thought he seemed okey. But oh man how I miss Jon, he was amazing.
I might go to their only show in Sweden at Arvikafestivalen to see them again. I just hope Omar finds his other pedals that he used on the older stuff cus that was one of my favorite things about him as a guitarist, the versitility of effects and weird noises.

I'm actually more stoked about Cryptomnesia, the collaboration between Omar, Cedric, Juan from TMV, Zach Hill and some other dude that has played with Hella.

yeah I saw that. It's a moot point for me. Mainly due to the fact no dates are in MN, as expected. Plus, King's X is playing Minneapolis on June 23rd anyway, as a headliner, so I don't think I'll be missing much.

June 23rd: gigantic day

The Dear Hunter - Act III
Kiss Kiss - The Meek Shall Inherit What's Left
Soundscape - Grave New World
Dream Theater - Black Clouds & Silver Linings
Born of Osiris - A Higher Place

maybe Mew as well.

The Mars Volta comes out the week before that, and dredg, the week before on the 9th.

Durn, no KX in SF...

Thanks for posting all the dredg stuff. Love that second album cover (that's the one posted on their website as well), and hopefully the songs won't be too wimpy for me to enjoy live. Will watch the youtubes and see.

Transatlantic to *officially* reunite.

well it's happening. Just as long as Neal keeps the lyrics secular biggrin.gif

TRANSATLANTIC FLIES AGAIN!!!

PROGRESSIVE ROCK SUPERGROUP
REUNITES FOR NEW STUDIO ALBUM.
POSSIBLE LATE 2009 RELEASE PLANNED.

TRANSATLANTIC, the progressive rock "supergroup" comprised of Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Pete Trewavas (Marillion), Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings) and Neal Morse (ex-Spock's Beard), have reunited after a 7 year hiatus to begin work on a brand new studio album.

The band began work on the album in early April in Nashville and are expected to have it released by year's end if all goes as planned.

TRANSATLANTIC have previously released two studio albums to tremendous critical and fan acclaim: 2000's SMPTe and 2001's Bridge Across Forever. The band toured on the heels of each release with an American Tour in 2000 and a European Tour in 2001 and released subsequent Live DVD's/CD's from both tours before going their separate ways for an indefinite hiatus which lasted almost the entire decade.

Is Neal Morse off the Godwagon, or is he willing to put that aside for this project? I thought all he wanted was to do God's work now.
Soundscape
apparently for 1 album he will be. It would be nice to see some kind of quote from Neal. I mean afterall, they would likely have made at least 1 maybe a couple more albums and not had this lengthly hiatus if it wasn't for his "finding god" approach to music back in 2002.

They were pretty wimpy live when they played with Torche.... All in all the performance felt much less sincere than other times I've seen them..... Still fun, though.

latest dredg tracks to surface, "Ireland" and "Lightswitch" are ace.
Karnivool's new single "Set Fire to the Hive" smokes. The album is supposed to drop in late May. Based on that new track, I definitely have more optimism for it.
Oceansize have a 3 DVD/4 CD Live Boxed Set called "Feed to Feed" coming out in June. Taken from their 3-complete album anniversary shows back-2-back-2-back nights last fall. They also have been twittering about their new EP.

finally a proper version (vbr). Fuck, tomorrow will be a wonderful morning to finally hear this thing after over 4 years.

new dredg is as epic as it seemed it could be. It is really fucking good. Very conceptual. I need a lot more time with it, but there's isn't a bad track or segue piece. "Gathering Pebbles" and "Mourning This Morning" among the new tracks-to-me were highlights. "Quotes" lived up to my hopes thus far.

It is like the new Decemberists or even El CIELO in a lot of ways; pushing you to play it all at once instead of song to song or even random tracks, lol.

My guess is a lot of people will dig it, some may not. Some it may grow on.

the new Mars Volta album leaked a few days ago. It may be their most accessible album yet. Really stripped down..lot of it's acoustic. Maybe their LZ III?

Woa...I might actually be excited for this now. Interesting.

Anyone here familiar with Astra from San Diego? Great, old-fashioned psychedelic prog...if I were to compare to contemporary bands, I'd say it's closest to the rock jams of Dungen, the flutey prog of Blood Ceremony, and the satisfying gallops of the Devil's Blood. Plus it's on Rise Above, so you know it's good.
