i do like how you assume that either someone is a longtime cat power fan, or this is the first they have heard of her.
it's an okay-ish album. about a solid 6 if i ever heard one.

good point. i guess i'm only interested in opinions from those two grps (if you don't like cat power at all, you probably don't like this album either). the trend i've seen is that newcomers love it; old-time fans really aren't pleased.

haha, what?
how is a 7.5 bad?
i'd say anything over 6 is a pretty good album no?
i love 1000's of albums, does that mean they're all over 8?

7.5 isn't bad by any means, it's pretty good. Our definition of "love" in relation to music is very different, I guess. For me, any album I'd say I love would be well above an 8. Whatever, different strokes, to each his own, etc.

I really do like the title track and I think it's a strong album. I wouldn't call myself a longtime fan and I haven't heard ALL of her stuff, but this may be the most I've ever liked a Cat Power album. The only problem is I'm rarely in the mood for Cat Power.
(For people who've seen V For Vendetta, doesn't that Cat Power song come out of nowhere? And what a fucking hipster V is! He has Chan AND Antony & the Johnsons on his jukebox!)

this was my intorduction to CP and i love it. i should have listened to my old assistant editor on the paper who was apeshit for her. i always assumed my assistant was a staunch bulldyke, however, and she was into bulldyke-y music like anni difranco, so i always avoided the Power.

Chalk one up for that street teamer a month or so back. I never heard of her until then and coupled with the fact that she's playing coachella I downloaded The Greatest and I love it. It's a cross between Fiona and Neko but much more sophisticated lyrics.
I fell in love after listening to half the album yesterday.
As far as loving a 7.0 and up album. How the hell can't you? That's well above average. If I only loved albums I called a 9 or a 10 then my list would be small.

This album was my intro to her, and while Kat is right about the title track, aside from that and "Love and Communication", I think the album sticks too much on one type of groove. I don't feel like the songs have a much life to them. Very pretty, but not as interesting as I would have hoped: C

How the hell can't you? Easy. I listened to Franz Ferdinand's second album and thought it was decent, 7/10 piece of work. But it was a disappointment after their first one. I didn't hate it (and I sure as hell didn't love it), but I expected so much more. For me anyway, there's a difference between liking something (or being letdown by a CD, though still thinking it's decent) and loving it.

We can agree to disagree as everyone's scale is subjective to what each rating would mean I suppose.
I can't stand the 1-10.0 scale. Why do I need tenths between each number. 1-10 is even to much. 5 point systems are as far as you need to go with halfs if you so desire. Or how many stars out of 5. The 10 point system is just pretentious.

I agree with this. A 7 for me isn't all that great. This thread proves, though, that even ratings for albums can mean different things to different people--even moreso than I would have thought.

my choice wasn't in there. A fan of Cat Power and for some reason The Greatest didn't grab me. That is until I bought the CD version, after having been listening to the MP3 version on a burn CD.
I think it's her best work.
On a side note...just more verification that mp3's are inferior and folks that rely on them as their only way of listening to music are sorely missing out. I find it funny that Kot and Dero pride themselves on their crappy stereo equipment. As a critic I don't think it's something to brag about.
