Full Version: Taxes

I just stood in front of the copy machine blasting copies of "important documentation" to send to somebody...if there's one thing that makes me feel more astoundingly inadequate than, say, my own wife it's taxes. I don't understand them.

Y'all do yours yet? Do you do yours on your own? Or do you have "a guy"? Seems like every 3rd person I know has an uncle who's an accountant or their buddy's neighbor buys mescaline from a guy who has an abacus or whatever....

"Schedule(s) K-1 showing income or loss from partnerships, S corporations or estates or trusts".

Hold the friggin' mayo...

My husband had his own business and I kept the books. We had an accountant but I would always figure the taxes on my own, and my version always included deductions or expenses the accountant had overlooked, and mine were accurate while his always had a couple of errors.

I started using MacInTax and also figured the taxes manually to ensure the program wasn't flawed (nay-sayers had made me paranoid). After 4-5 years of parallel processing, I had enough confidence in the software to rely just on that.

But yes, I hate doing taxes.

ps--the thing about having "a guy" is that you end up doing all the hard work anyway--collecting the receipts and categorizing them. All he does is plug your data into his program and press "print."

My wife did our taxes this year. We got a really nice refund, which is unfortunately already spent.

I've used TaxCut for the past few years and have been happy with the results. But I've got friends who claim that I'd get more back using their guy, because there are things an accountant can do that the software doesn't account for. I'm debating giving that a shot this year, but haven't decided. If I procrastinate much longer I'll have to go w/ Taxcut again.

We got a new bed and a really nice TV stand made for our new living room.

When I was married and my wife had her own busness, I had a tax guy. He was a partner at Ernst & Young, and didn't need the money. He did "artist taxes" and take artwork in trade, rather than payment. He did good work, and we always got a healthy refund.

Now I'm divorced, but still making a good enough living (the arts business ran at a loss for four years), I realized that since I own nothing, I have no place to hide. So there's not much point in an accountant. I bought a copy of Turbo Tax and did the whole thing myself, and then re-checked the figures outside of the the program. I owed the feds $34 and the state $13. I was relieved-- I figured I was going to owe a huge amount.

What happened to good old fashioned procrastinating? You people give rock and/or roll a bad name, fo' sho'. And it's off - I just walked over to the missus' building so she can Fed-Ex this packet of vitals to some dude in Michigan...every industry or career niche has a puddle of names everybody always fawns over & this dude is one so...we'll see how it goes.

There's no such thing as debtor's prison anymore, is there? I wouldn't last long in stockades...

And damn, Big - you got a new place, new paint, new bed, new tables...you gearing up for a clip on MTV's "Cribs"?

I did my taxes myself online with TurboTax. I'm single, no kids and make peanuts so it wasn't ahrd at all. My measly refund was spent before the little hourglass icon on my comp could stop spinning. dry.gif

Ditto. My taxes are pretty complicated (100% of my income is 1099 and self-reported income, no W-2s or anything), but Turbotax made it all a snap. I still owe the government a fair bit above the quarterly payments I already made, but it's a lot less than I thought I would owe.

Yeah, TurboTax (or its predecessor, MacInTax) saved my life the year my mom died. It did let me down last year when I bought my condo though....advised me to claim 13 dependents. Eleven will get you reported to the IRS so I only claimed 10, and still owe $600 sad.gif
Hips
i filed with the turbo tax early last month and have been sittin on my refund for about 3weeks now. just waiting to find a sweet bed to purchase and the rest is going back into the savings account.

Are you looking for a mattress or frame?

My wife and I just picked up a Sealy Truform (their version of the Tempurpedic "space bed"), and it is so fucking awesome. My back had been killing me lately, and this thing is doing the trick. I haven't slept this well in ages. Fairly expensive investment, but well worth it.

we are in the market for both. we shopped around for some frames this weekend at CB2 and RH and found some nice stuff. but we are both kinda indecisive so it's becoming more of a pain in the ass than it really needs to be.

that one looks pretty sweet. i need something a bit more firm than the one we have now. it's a bit too cushy and i just usually wake up in pain. i'm gonna foward that one over to her.

What's great about it is that it is totally firm when you first lie down, but you sort of sink into the foam after a couple seconds. Then you feel like you are suspended or something, with all of your weight supported properly.

We both used to be pretty abrupt "toss 'n turners," constantly waking each other up in the middle of the night, but I haven't noticed either one of us doing so the past three nights.

Sorry to sound like a commercial, but I'm amazed by this bed.
Hips

We got ours from Fields @ Old Orchard.

We got a queen, and I think it ended up being $1200 with delivery, and a couple promotional sales. They were having a no finance charges until August if you open a Fields charge promo going on, so we did that and are going to pay it off in chunks over the summer. They were having some $100 off for every grand you pay thing going on, and the mattress set was already on sale to begin with, but if you watch long enough you realize that mattresses are always on sale.

The nice thing about getting it from Fields/Macys is that the mattresses are made to order (at least according to the salesman, so take it for what it's worth), rather than buying a mattress set that's been sitting around in a warehouse like if you bought it from Mattress Giant or one of those places. You might be able to get a better price from one of those stores, though.

It seems like a ridiculous amount to spend on a bed, but I'm already feeling the effects. Since the discomfort in my back has started to subside, I'm in a much better mood and much more pleasant to be around.

Alright, stupid question time. Where the hell do you get tax forms from? I know you can usually get them at the library, but I don't really have one convenient to me that I can get to until this weekend and I'd like to dig in before then. I thought some post offices used to have them, but apparently not as I learned over my lunch hour.

Or can you just download them from the IRS website or something?

there is no price for comfort. especially with the condition of my ever aging body. i'm gonna have to go try one of them out. thnx

skinny - That was how we rationalized it.

About procrastinating - If this were up to me, they would not have been done yet. Hell, I've had years where I've know that I was getting a refund, and still filed over a year late.

I'll second that (I have a Tempur-pedic), although the best idea may be the 'sleep number' mattress which is an inflatable top over the memory foam.

Did you get one? Are its seats Tempur-pedic?
