Any recommendations on shows in Vegas? Any opinions on any of the Cirque du Soleil stuff (they have like 3 or 4 shows out there)?

Not neccessarily looking for concerts or anything. But as an alternative to gambling, which can get boring after a while, it would be nice to relax and do something different. However, on the music scene, any good places to catch decent bands at all there?

Also will be meeting an additional group of people there as well. Any good places to go with a group of 10+ or so (I think I went to a second city or improve type thing at Flamingo last year with a group from work. It absolutely sucked. Sucked. Sucked. Sucked.)?

Great shows:

Avenue Q @ Wynn <<--- this is a fucking awesome show, so see them before they close in May!
Penn + Teller @ Rio
Ka @ MGM
Le Reve @ Wynn
Mystere @ Treasure Island
O @ Bellagio
Forever Plaid @ Gold Coast
Clint Holmes @ Harrah's
Gordy Brown @ Golden Nugget
La Femme @ MGM
Blue Man Group @ Venetian
Lance Burton @ Monte Carlo

Also, contact the Hollywood Box Office @ MGM - they're always getting great entertainers weekly. I've seen George Carlin, Carrot Top, David Copperfield, Howie Mandel and more on their marquee.

These are great suggestions. I was looking at O and Mystere. Damn I wish was going sooner than June, Avenue Q looks great. Le Reve tickets are only listed until June 24, the week before I go. Damn!

Is BlueMan vastly different than the Chicago group?

Honestly, I'm not sure. I've heard it's a bit different than the Chicago show, and they just moved to a different hotel, so the skuttlebutt on the street is there are some new tricks.

IMHO - Mystere is a more dynamic show than O. O is really pretty, almost like water ballet (with clowns!) and so forth... but there's no real big peak of the show... it just... sorta... trails.. off.... and 'cuz it's a water show, the lighting is predominatly blue for like, oh, the whole show. Mystere has a much more colourful setup, with all sortsa wild things happening everywhere including people bouncing on trampolines and whacking big Taiko drums. And a giant snail. Yeah, I don't quite get that last part either....

If yer in the mood for a more... hurr... adult show... I'd avoid Zumanity - it's seriously the cheesiest thing out of the Cirque camp. They tried to be kinda risque and bawdy, but it just doesn't quite work. I will say that the theater is one of the most gorgeous rooms I've ever been in, though. But for my money, bounce over to the MGM and see La Femme. Seriously. You can thank me later.

Pity about Avenue Q - but keep it in mind for your next NYC trip.

Yeah, in addition to the Depeche Mode show, we're thinking of seeing this. My parents saw it in NY and recommended it.

Last time I was in Vegas, I saw Carlin. I also had to sit through Mama Mia, as it was what my ex wanted to see. It took two years for my balls to grow back after that.

Ouch.
Sorry.

Yeah, I just can't bring myself to see any of the shows that were based around a music group. For some reason it seems, I dunno, cheating if they're not using original music. Sorta like an extended version of that ol' TV show "Puttin On the Ritz", where everyone tried to out-lip-synch each other for prizes. Mamma Mia, We Will Rock You - and supposedly the new Cirque show opening soon is based on.. the Beatles. Now, come onnnnn....

But defintely see Avenue Q. No excuses.

There's something on Dylan's website--looks like the folks behind Movin' Out created something called The Times They Are A-Changin'. Between that and the Beatles, nothing really is sacred, is there?

Noted on Avenue Q. We're thinking of seeing about cheap tickets once we get there. Or this thing selling out too fast to get them last minute?

Finding tickets should be pretty easy. Or are you thinking NY?

Vegas show 'Avenue Q' hits dead end

Jesse Mckinley | New York Times News Service
Posted March 1, 2006

The puppets are folding.

After five lackluster months on the Las Vegas Strip, and nearly two years after rejecting a national tour, the producers of Avenue Q, the 2004 Tony Award winner for best musical, said they would close the Vegas version of this ribald, puppet-happy musical in late May. The show, which is playing to only about 65 percent of capacity in a 1,200-seat theater at the Wynn Las Vegas, will be replaced by Monty Python's Spamalot, which won last year's Tony for best musical.

In a telephone interview, Steve Wynn, the resort's owner, said last week that the decision was largely about real estate. His initial plan had been to build a separate theater for Spamalot, but he said he would be able to save millions -- and allow for more casino areas, convention space and hotel rooms -- by simply converting the Avenue Q theater into a theater for Spamalot.

But Wynn also conceded that Avenue Q hadn't sold as well as he had expected.

"If I was making $10 million with Avenue Q, this wouldn't be a tough decision," said Wynn, who put up $2.5 million to mount Avenue Q in Las Vegas and built a $40 million theater for it to play in. "But it was playing right on the cusp."

Avenue Q's short-lived run in Las Vegas will probably give pause to many Broadway producers who have seen long-running blockbusters and newly minted hits alike head to the desert chasing seemingly no-lose propositions. In the case of Avenue Q, for example, producers calculated that they could save touring expense, get a custom-built theater and harvest an ever-replenishing audience of Vegas visitors. Theater operators around the country, meanwhile, worried that Broadway productions would bypass them, as Avenue Q did.

But while the Broadway version of Avenue Q continues to draw healthy audiences, Wynn said the Vegas version struggled to find a niche in a city where the potential audience is constantly in flux.

"The trouble is, how do you sell Avenue Q," Wynn said, pointing out that Las Vegas audiences "turn over every week, so word of mouth takes longer to penetrate a market."

Last time I saw them was 1989, when they did a couple of weeks at the Schubert Theatre. They were amazing. I dunno why people waste their time with wanks like David Copperfield, etc.
Space Oddity
I saw "Ka" back in August. I'm no expert on Cirque du Soleil shows, but I thought it was great (even if I was expecting more pyrotechnics). The costumes, acrobatics, and especially the sets are amazing. Even the music was pretty cool. It is an expensive ticket, but you can see why it costs so much. I didn't feel ripped off at all. I definitely recommend it.

Unlike Siegfried and Roy. I saw them years ago. What a joke! I wanted my money back. The magic tricks weren't even that good, the dance numbers and songs were terrible, and the tigers and lions were hardly in the show. And yet everyone but me was giving them a standing ovation!

Sorry. Anyway, I'm going to be in Vegas in a couple months and I would like to see Penn and Teller. That's a pretty expensive ticket too, I think it was a hundred bucks last time I was in town. They may be good, but are they worth $100? Does anyone know?

Back when I was planning on Vegas for spring break (in Florida for break as we speak) I was planning on checking out these guys: http://www.purplereign.net/

They used to have a residency at some off-strip place that closed down, but now they do shows at several different casinos. Looks pretty awesome to me.
