Ok people, I don't have HBO, never have, and with the pending thrifty living due to the economy, ain't gonna get it anytime soon.

I get to all the premium channel stuff late via DVD, but I have been hearing good things about this little series and made sure a friend DVR'd all of it for me to see next time I have the chance.

2 of my buddies have been talking it up and I trust their sense of humor, and Artie Lange was talking it up as well, and we all know he is the arbiter of funny.

Opinions please? No spoilers!

I think it's the very definition of a hate it or love it comedy. My brother and I think it's absolutely hilarious, I don't know anyone else who can watch an episode, much less enjoy one. It's a strange creature in terms of TV comedies in that the lead character has no redeeming qualities whatsoever. He's not a drunken, drug-abusing lout with a heart of gold underneath, he's just a drunken, drug-abusing lout. It's also hilarious to see Will Ferrell basically playing pro wrestler Ric Flair as a used car dealer.
Paul
I love it. caley is right in saying that it most likely a very divisive show because Kenny Powers is pretty much a horrible person. I think the tone reminds me a lot of the UK Office. The humour is not the same, but it is uncomfortable and dark and hilarious.
Pat Sansone
i agree with all this. i think it's pretty consistently funny. first couple episodes were a little funnier than the most recent ones. but overall, it's over-the-top in a will ferrell sort of way. and i can dig that
tjenz
I've been watching this. surprised there hasn't been any chatter around here about this show. I laugh out loud a few times every episode. Kenny Powers is a complete douche, but I still root for him.

another reason to watch the show

Love this show (although I missed last night's episode).

Danny McBride has sort have been annointed the next big comedy thing, and whoever's in charge has got it right. He's really nailed it in Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, and now this. I hear "The Foot Fist Way" is pretty good too (basically Kenny Powers as a small town kung fu instructor).

"Honey, you know I love you, but you have clothes like a fucking dickhead."

Hilarious show. I'll be stunned if it gets picked up for a second season.

Can someone tell me what this show has to do with the song from Smokey And The Bandit?

Eastbound and down, loaded up and truckin',
We're gonna do what they say can't be done.
We've got a long way to go and a short time to get there.
I'm eastbound, just watch ol' "Bandit" run.

I've interpreted it as a reference to the fact that Kenny Powers returns to his East Coast home in North Carolina, and he's down on his luck. That's just a guess though.
Hips
with the exception of Kenny's brother and the gorgeous brunette love interest. EVERYONE on this show is a douche. so far i've been laughing my ass off.

I'm really attracted to that chick, too. She lost a lot of weight between the pilot episode and the rest of the show.

I noticed that too. In the pilot she's almost a bbw, but that scene where she strips down in the fourth episode...well someone had been hitting the gym (or crystal meth).
Chronodiggity
after seeing the first three episodes, i like it but i'm not ready to rave about it at all.

i'll keep watching it though.
Ogawa
Just watched episode five. Damn good ending.
nagode
the first epidsode of this show was one of the best things ive seen in a while...the rest of the episodes up until were just ok...last sundays though was fucking hysterical...

anyone notice the huge difference in the characters appearence from the pilot to all the other episodes...the teacher lost a ton of weight...the principal lost some hair etc...

edit: didnt see the above posts talking about this already...

They shot the pilot in June 2007 and the rest of the series was done sometime last year. Also explains why his brother's kids look older.

Totally stunt boobs. What a let down.

Those weren't hers??? FUCK. They were nice, though.

If they show boobs, no face. It's always stunt boobs.

Fuck you guys that go by the name "BJ." I fucking hate that shit. That's not who you are, that's what I want.

Deep down in my plums, I know this is a fantastic show.

The man behind the casting of Buster Bluth must also be responsible for Stevie Janowski.

Season 2 happening soon?

This show is good times on the reg. Looking forward to season 2 and I hope Will Ferrel continues to make appearances.

Did you see the outtakes? This scene, in particular, is incredible as Kenny and his rival have to keep a straight-face while Ferrell riffs about his plums: "Kids taking plums to school in their lunch. Taking a big bite out of my plums. Plum juice running down their chins." with McBride imploring Craig Robinson not to laugh.

Not expected until sometime in 2010.

Yeah, saw that. One of the best thigs I've seen in a while. Ferrell in those scenes was just brilliant. The plums, as well as talking about his kid walking in on he and his wife having sex.

Spoiler/NSFW: click to show/hide
"Violent, painful lovemaking"
"Thrusting on top of her... she does not like it"
"Let him watch. Let the boy watch."

Unreal stuff. One of the few outtake sessions that's just as worth watching as the show itself.

So, now I have something to look forward to in 2010. Bonus.

the will ferrell character wasn't funny, it was gratuitous and took away from the brilliance of Kenny Powers. It just wasn't necessary. Enough of the vanity cameos.

Agree to disagree here, based primarily on the scenes mentioned above (and the always ridicularious outtakes), though overall I'm inclined to agree with you. And definitely agree with the general sentiment.

Ooh: he also gave us the one liner about his associate who will "finger you with his penis."

so, I guess my overall verdict is - unnecessary vanity cameo that only half succeeded, but brought a few moments of top notch hilarity. So... Will Ferrell. Standard fare.
C.I.
I've only seen a few episodes of this, but it was hilarious when I've watched. the one line that I thought was incredible..

"yeah I've been called a xenophobe, but I just honestly believe that the United States is the best country in the world. That used to be called patriotism."
MattW
Will Ferrell running his mouth and not yelling = Funny more often than not.
Will Ferrell doing physical comedy and/or yelling = Usually obnoxious.

These cameos were the former, so I approve.
caley
Come on, Carolina-based filmmakers having Will Ferrell play a used car salesman based so obviously off Carolina-based pro wrestler Ric Flair? How can that be anything but gold?

nosmokeinthelungs
Exactly, that's why it was unnecessary, the show stands on its own as pure gold, and it didn't need a ringer. That's why it was gratuitous.

You know when a baseball team has perfect chemistry going into the post-season, clicking on all cylinders? But the stupid fucking GM decides they have to fix something that ain't broke? It takes away from the good thing they got going. It just ain't necessary when it is working.

Look at Ferrell's involvement in the project, he and McKay befriended the posse of the writers and creators, agreed to produce and put up the money for the show, and Ferrell probably begged to do a bit part.
Valentine
I'm in the mood to watch this again, anyone know a reliable site for streaming television shows?

Did this show have a better 3 minutes than right here?

Asked about his recent work in TV on the HBO series “Eastbound and Down,” starring McBride, Green said that he mostly used friends from North Carolina for his crew and shot it mostly like a “three-hour epic” movie. They’re gearing up to shoot a second season, this time with eight episodes, and having just read the first script he’s eager to take the story in a whole new direction: “We leave the country and most of the characters behind,” he said with a cryptic smile. “It gets dark.”

Best guess here is Kenny goes to pitch in the Dominican, to try and resurrect his career.
The Gooch
Can't wait for the season to start. I thought this was a spot-on assessment of Danny McBride, and why he's so great. From Dana Stevens' Observe and Report review:

QUOTE
One fixed truth I can hang onto in this maelstrom of contradictory reactions to Observe and Report is that Seth Rogen is miscast in it. (Or is he? Maybe that miscastness is precisely what Hill intended. Ah, shut up, brain.) As Ronnie Barnhardt, the bipolar and delusional head of security at Forest Ridge Mall, Rogen goes deeper than he ever has—and that's not a good thing. As it turns out, Seth Rogen's actorly depths do not require sonar to be sounded. In fairness to the Rogester, Ronnie Barnhardt is a tough nut to crack. He must be unhinged and pitiable, frightening and funny, morally repellent and yet identifiably human, something like Robert DeNiro's Rupert Pupkin in The King of Comedy.

There aren't a lot of actors alive who could play Rupert Pupkin; even DeNiro himself, now in his later, broader phase, might have lost the knack. But there's someone who could have nailed Ronnie Barnhardt for half Seth Rogen's salary: Hill's muse Danny McBride, who appears briefly in Observe and Report as a Latino crack dealer. McBride, who played a megalomaniacal tae kwon do instructor in Hill's self-financed debut, The Foot Fist Way, and is now starring as a retired baseball player in Hill's HBO series, Eastbound and Down, has a knack for seeming at once achingly vulnerable and frighteningly deranged. Rogen can do the vulnerability but not the derangement: His comic center has always been his sanity, the sense he gives of being the lone earthbound pragmatist wryly observing the surrounding folly.

That seems exactly right.
Hans Christian Anderson
^eh, this is more the fact that hill writes all his movies/shows around the same character, not the actor. its not like mcbride is particularly great at this character or anything (he is), the parts are just good. the point that proves this theory is that mcbride is great in other roles where he's not the classic hill character (see: tropic thunder, pineapple express, etc.)
