great list and thanks to paul.

would any enterprising person out there happen to have a list of albums that made only one of the two best albums list? as in, these were on 2004 but not 2009, and vice versa?

Always thought Treasure was the album most focused on by fans.

It's all about Head Over Heels for me.

I struggled with this as well. Ended up voting Treasure since it does seem like the classic Twins record, but there are days I would say Blue Bell Knoll.

Quite amused at the idea of OK Computer being a 'prog rock' album.

Do you get amused when someone looks at a lake and says "that's water", too?

I like it as a collection of songs, but it's nowhere near as prog as

progressive rock album =/= concept album

so then the fact that it's been 10 years has no bearing on your argument. if music is deemed to be pioneering enough, its infuence can be felt immediately based on what you just said. so what you meant to say is that OK Computer/Kid A weren't pioneering enough to be in the top 20.

just trying to make some sense out of this bullshit argument

Srsly bro, not worth the effort.

yeah, idk why i thought it would be worth my while to be involved in that argument. i never want to be that guy who argues with Montana

thanks Mitchell. I love that kind of stuff. Neil's really got an incredibly well loved variety of records, huh?

a little surprised the Kinks failed to place 4 records in the top 500. I need to go back and see where they all placed, but Village Green, Something Else, Muswell Hillbillies, Arthur, Face to Face and Lola, at a minimum SHOULD have cracked the 500. Then again there an incredible number of great albums historically so I shouldn't be shocked.

Also interesting that several artists had more records place than the Beatles. Hope that shuts up all the folks who complain about the Beatles dominance in these things. News flash: they deserve to dominate and their dominance is not really even all that dominating.
Duff.

If you're old enough to drink, then have some beers and play it really loud and dance, stomp and air guitar your way through the whole two albums worth.

PS....more than a stunner with Murmur at #3 is REM having 8 releases in the top 500, beating all comers.

I guess I didn't care for OKC at first either, so whatevs.

You probably need to listen to it more than once before you decide whether or not it's the greatest album of all time. dry.gif

Mitchell inspired me to do a little digging on a few artists and here are some thing that I found interesting.

Joni Mitchell's 4th entry was Hissing of the Summer Lawns at #528.
Imperial Bedroom missed the top 500 (came in at 654).
Tom Waits had 3 more in the top 1000, for a total of 7. Pretty impressive, especially since norton didn't vote (did maloney vote?)
Kinks 4th entry was Face to Face at #555 and they only 4 in the top 1000...
Springsteen not only had only 3 in the top 500, but had only 3 in the top 1000. No Born in the USA, no Darkness, no Tunnel of Love, no Seeger Sessions, no The River, no The Rising. norton really should have voted.
Pavement Ist Rad
Seriously? The Seeger Sessions not in the top 1000?

settle down beavis. was just pointing out a bunch of springsteen records that a lot of people liked. I didn't vote for it, nor was I shocked that particular one missed. Although a friend of mine listed it on facebook as one of the 5 albums that changed her life, so I guess that was on my mind when I included it. I was mostly shocked at Darkness, The River and to a lesser extent, BITUSA and Tunnel of Love.
Rob Gordon
Yes, that Darkness didn't make it is rather baffling.

Uh....Pink Floyd is one of the major original influences in rock, second only to the Beatles in rock band sales. They deserve to have seven albums.

IR and Amnesiac *do not* belong in a top 500 all time.
Duff.
Point is you voted for who you liked, not who you were supposed to, otherwise you'd've had a buncha Beatles at the top of your list, by your own admission.

The Clash - London Calling[/size]
(9727 Points, 44 Votes, Five #1 Votes)

Release Date[/b]: December 14, 1979

Chart Peak: #27 (US), #9 (UK)

All Music Review: "Give 'Em Enough Rope, for all of its many attributes, was essentially a holding pattern for the Clash, but the double-album London Calling is a remarkable leap forward, incorporating the punk aesthetic into rock & roll mythology and roots music. Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There's punk and reggae, but there's also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn't tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call. While many of the songs — particularly "London Calling," "Spanish Bombs," and "The Guns of Brixton" — are explicitly political, by acknowledging no boundaries the music itself is political and revolutionary. But it is also invigorating, rocking harder and with more purpose than most albums, let alone double albums. Over the course of the record, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones (and Paul Simonon, who wrote "The Guns of Brixton") explore their familiar themes of working-class rebellion and antiestablishment rants, but they also tie them in to old rock & roll traditions and myths, whether it's rockabilly greasers or "Stagger Lee," as well as mavericks like doomed actor Montgomery Clift. The result is a stunning statement of purpose and one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever recorded." (5/5)

Previous Rank on SOMB 500 (2004): #2

Wow, so London Calling topped you guys' list, too. Really baffling how that album gets so much more love than so many other things.

Sure, it's good. Great even. Their first album is better, though, as are at least 10 other albums from 1979 alone.

Sorry, I was wrong. It's 14.

1. Talking Heads - Fear of Music (my fav. Talking Heads record)
2. Elvis Costello - Armed Forces (my fav. Elvis Costello)
3. Gang of Four - Entertainment!
4. XTC - Drums and Wires (my fav. XTC)
5. Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box
6. Live at the Witch Trials - The Fall
7. Gary Numan/Tubeway Army - Replicas
8. Wire - 154
9. Funkadelic - Uncle Jam Wants You
10. The Slits - Cut
11. Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps
12. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures
13. Pere Ubu - New Picnic Time
14. The B-52's - s/t

And if I counted Singles Going Steady, it'd would beat out Wire for #8, making it 15 albums from 1979 that I consider better than London Calling, or at least that I would rather listen to.

1979 happens to be my favorite year for music. London Calling would still be beating out a ton of great stuff including Magazine - Secondhand Daylight, Devo - Duty Now for the Future, Joe Jackson - Look Sharp!, The Wall, The Undertones, The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys, Roedelius (Cluster) - Grosses Wasser, David Bowie - Lodger, Michael Jackson - Off the Wall, The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette, Highway to Hell, The Ramones - End of the Century, Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks, Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle, The Fall - Dragnet and The Raincoats.

Mitchell
It's probably the best year ever.

1979 was a great year if you like that super weird urban new wave. To me, the poison of that genre leeched into a great deal of music in the decades to follow and ruined it. If music had an EPA, that genre would be declared a superfund site and put on a priority list of cleanup efforts.

That music is a drag, nothing more.

Nah, while a good deal of it is certainly darker, nearly all of it (the worthwhile stuff anyway) is full of pop hooks and plenty of energy. Dark Side isn't exactly feel good music, but you seem to enjoy it.
Merle
Since no years other than 1979 are being nominated, I'm going to have to agree that it was the best year for music.
