It's all about Head Over Heels for me.
I struggled with this as well. Ended up voting Treasure since it does seem like the classic Twins record, but there are days I would say Blue Bell Knoll.

thanks Mitchell. I love that kind of stuff. Neil's really got an incredibly well loved variety of records, huh?
a little surprised the Kinks failed to place 4 records in the top 500. I need to go back and see where they all placed, but Village Green, Something Else, Muswell Hillbillies, Arthur, Face to Face and Lola, at a minimum SHOULD have cracked the 500. Then again there an incredible number of great albums historically so I shouldn't be shocked.
Also interesting that several artists had more records place than the Beatles. Hope that shuts up all the folks who complain about the Beatles dominance in these things. News flash: they deserve to dominate and their dominance is not really even all that dominating.

Mitchell inspired me to do a little digging on a few artists and here are some thing that I found interesting.
Joni Mitchell's 4th entry was Hissing of the Summer Lawns at #528. Imperial Bedroom missed the top 500 (came in at 654). Tom Waits had 3 more in the top 1000, for a total of 7. Pretty impressive, especially since norton didn't vote (did maloney vote?) Kinks 4th entry was Face to Face at #555 and they only 4 in the top 1000... Springsteen not only had only 3 in the top 500, but had only 3 in the top 1000. No Born in the USA, no Darkness, no Tunnel of Love, no Seeger Sessions, no The River, no The Rising. norton really should have voted.

Although a friend of mine listed it on facebook as one of the 5 albums that changed her life, so I guess that was on my mind when I included it. I was mostly shocked at Darkness, The River and to a lesser extent, BITUSA and Tunnel of Love.

#1.
The Clash - London Calling[/size] (9727 Points, 44 Votes, Five #1 Votes)
Release Date[/b]: December 14, 1979
Chart Peak: #27 (US), #9 (UK)
All Music Review: "Give 'Em Enough Rope, for all of its many attributes, was essentially a holding pattern for the Clash, but the double-album London Calling is a remarkable leap forward, incorporating the punk aesthetic into rock & roll mythology and roots music. Before, the Clash had experimented with reggae, but that was no preparation for the dizzying array of styles on London Calling. There's punk and reggae, but there's also rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock; and while the record isn't tied together by a specific theme, its eclecticism and anthemic punk function as a rallying call. While many of the songs — particularly "London Calling," "Spanish Bombs," and "The Guns of Brixton" — are explicitly political, by acknowledging no boundaries the music itself is political and revolutionary. But it is also invigorating, rocking harder and with more purpose than most albums, let alone double albums. Over the course of the record, Joe Strummer and Mick Jones (and Paul Simonon, who wrote "The Guns of Brixton") explore their familiar themes of working-class rebellion and antiestablishment rants, but they also tie them in to old rock & roll traditions and myths, whether it's rockabilly greasers or "Stagger Lee," as well as mavericks like doomed actor Montgomery Clift. The result is a stunning statement of purpose and one of the greatest rock & roll albums ever recorded." (5/5)
Just finnished checking the list. This #1 made me so happy...

Public Image Ltd. - Metal Box 6. Live at the Witch Trials - The Fall 7. Gary Numan/Tubeway Army - Replicas 8. Wire - 154 9. Funkadelic - Uncle Jam Wants You 10. The Slits - Cut 11. Neil Young - Rust Never Sleeps 12. Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures 13. Pere Ubu - New Picnic Time 14. The B-52's - s/t
And if I counted Singles Going Steady, it'd would beat out Wire for #8, making it 15 albums from 1979 that I consider better than London Calling, or at least that I would rather listen to.
1979 happens to be my favorite year for music. London Calling would still be beating out a ton of great stuff including Magazine - Secondhand Daylight, Devo - Duty Now for the Future, Joe Jackson - Look Sharp!, The Wall, The Undertones, The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys, Roedelius (Cluster) - Grosses Wasser, David Bowie - Lodger, Michael Jackson - Off the Wall, The Damned - Machine Gun Etiquette, Highway to Hell, The Ramones - End of the Century, Graham Parker - Squeezing Out Sparks, Gary Numan - The Pleasure Principle, The Fall - Dragnet and The Raincoats.

1979 was a great year if you like that super weird urban new wave. To me, the poison of that genre leeched into a great deal of music in the decades to follow and ruined it. If music had an EPA, that genre would be declared a superfund site and put on a priority list of cleanup efforts.
