The Yankees are in last place & the Royals are perfect so far.
no magnets
so are the pirates. well, i wouldn't say they're perfect. but that's what their record shows.

Sabathia picked up where he left off...last April.

Oops, Mike Redmond is hurt now too. Two minor league catchers for the Twins for the next month?

Already getting a queasy feeling for not taking the 150-1 odds on the Bucs.

that feeling will subside sometime in the next two weeks.

Cliff Lee allowed more runs yesterday than he did in his first 7 starts last year. And his ERA after yesterday was nearly identical to his spring training ERA. Yikes.
MattW
A respected Twins blogger wrote an entry last week that between his horrible March and his nearly frantic pressure on the Indians to extend his contract, speculation on his health or lack thereof is becoming increasingly warranted.
MattW
Did Ozzie call Ron Gardenhire today and ask him how to make a lineup?
ParticleHustler
Just broke down and bought the MLB.com Mobile Premium package for my Blackberry. $14.99 for the season. Get a nice enhanced PBP feature and both home and away audio feeds, plus in-game video highlights. I'll definitely like this when I'm not near my TV or car.
MattW
Has anyone gotten MLB At Bat for the iPhone for this year? It's 9.99, I'm just wondering if it's worth it.
Dag Nasty
Just got off a call to square away this year's home run/RBI derby:

R. Howard
C. Quentin
P. Fielder
J. Hamilton
A. Soriano
C. Lee
C. Pena
D. Wright
J. Thome
M. Ordonez

Fuckers will rake...'cept for maybe Pena - that one was an off the cuff flyer because I couldn't think of anybody else...don't know dookie about that dude.
MattW
Man, having Joakim Soria as a closer is going to be nauesating this year with Farnsworth in front of him pitching the 8th.

EDIT: In fantasy terms, of course.

EDIT: Written as Jim Thome came to the plate.
ParticleHustler
Farnsworth signing was ridiculous, even before he threw a pitch.
MattW
Does Thome always homer on opening day? Seems like it.
ParticleHustler
I forgot KC signed Juan Cruz, too. How does Farnsworth pitch the 8th with a 1 run lead, and Cruz and Soria don't touch the ball?
MattW
Yeah, so did I. That is really maddening for me.

It's like a portable version of ESPN.com in the sense that you get real-time updates and scores/highlights after the game is done. It's a cool app if you're nowhere near a TV or computer. There is a 'lite' version for 99 cents, too. I'm not sure what that does.

Wise getting booed in the first game of the season for striking out three times and repeatedly popping up attempted bunts was pretty amazing. Meanwhile Getz and Fields were getting it done at the plate, on the basepaths, and in the field. I predicted a few weeks of the Wise leadoff boondoggle, but it might be even shorter than that.
MattW
I just looked at Getz's minor league career. Why isn't he leading off? It's pretty surprising to see a non-slugger prospect on the Sox have such an even SO/BB ratio.

Basically vague concerns/suspicions that it's too much pressure for a rookie. And a basically false belief that Wise gives you "speed at the top" (he's not fast, although he is one of the teams better baserunners). Thankfully there have been a lot of hints that Getz is next in line if Wise doesn't pull his act together quickly. Ozzie definitely sees Ramirez as more of a producer so Getz is really the only practical choice if/when Wise flounders.
ParticleHustler
Wise is leading off because Omar Moreno and Tony Womack are retired, and the Reds snapped up Willy Tavarez before the White Sox could get him.

How fucked are the Tigers?

MattW
Have the Detroit media used a lot of Bernie Madoff wisecracks and references when referring to their payroll situation and how much money they're flushing? I considered my own in this post, but thought better of it as it's probably a stale joke to Tiger fans who have already had that thought.

No shit. Perfect way to start the year - Verlander gets bombed, then they get a great starting performance from Jackson and the new reliever blows it. Twice. At least the new reliever wasn't Kyle Farnsworth - that's at least some consolation (although they had him once, so they knew better).

The Detroit media knows better than to bring up economics in a tongue in cheek or frivolous way. The Tigers mediocrity is hardly a problem compared to the rest of the city's woes.

Let's be honest, Jim Leyland blew that game. Brandon Lyon was merely hung out to dry on a night when he didn't have his stuff.
Granted, he's pitched like shit all spring, but how about bringing him along slowly when there's less on the line? Or at least have someone warming up in the pen. Fuck.
Bob Loblaw
For some reason, Fox Sports Detroit scrambled through my ATT provider about halfway through the game, so I missed the last few innings. But I thought that Rodney was the closer for the beginning of the season? Was this not a save situation?

Tigers fans are going to speak wistfully about the halcyon days of Todd Jones after about a month of Brandon Lyon giving up dingers every other outing.

I think making a Madoff joke is a bit different than making light of Michigan's financial problems, but point taken.
MattW
Emilio Bonifacio just notched his 7th and 8th hit today. He doesn't appear to walk as much as a guy with his build should, but he's always been capable of hitting for average. He should be an interesting player to watch.

Of course it is, but it's seriously like the great depression on that side of the state right now. I've never seen anything like it.

But yeah, Madoff could easily be the Tigers GM the last three years. Hopefully Dombrowski has rediscovered what made him great to begin with, ad in a few years they can move past the mistakes made in the second half of this decade.

Technically, it was a save situation, but it was the 8th inning. I was "watching" it on my phone, and I think what happened was Jackson gave up a solo HR to start the inning, Inge committed an error, a guy popped out, then Seay came in a got a force out, then Lyons came in with 1 on and 2 out and gave up a single and HR to go down 4-3. Inge tied it in the 9th with a HR, and Leyland sent Lyons back out to lose the game.

Rodney couldn't pitch in the 8th, because he's the closer and closers don't pitch until the 9th, of course!

So in 3 games, Bonifacio looks like a star against the team that just traded him, and the guys the Nats got back in return (a) gave up 8 runs in 3 innings yesterday, and (b ) left 5 men on base today, including a strikeout with 1 out and the bases loaded in the 9th, down by 2.

Great deal!
MattW
Joe Crede is playing tonight though it would be probably his most optimal chance to rest this week. The Twins want him to face Carlos Silva as he is 11-33 lifetime off him.

This concept is making my head spin. I guess it's just now hitting me that Joe Crede is a Twin.

I hope to hell this isn't true - nothing on the major sites yet about it:

QUOTE
TMZ has learned Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Nick Adenhart was killed in a felony hit-and-run car accident in Fullerton, California early this morning -- hours after he pitched in a game last night.

Nick Adenhart
Cops say someone driving a minivan blew through a red light, causing the Mitsubishi that Adenhart was riding in to hit a light pole. Three people were killed in the crash, including Nick.

Cops say the person driving the van fled the scene -- but was later caught and charged with felony hit-and-run. The suspect is currently being treated for injuries in a local hospital.

We're told one of the other men killed in the crash was also affiliated with the Angels organization.

Nick was 22 years old.

FYI -- Nick pitched his ass off last night, striking out 5 guys in 6 scoreless innings. His performance was hailed by sportswriters as a "brilliant effort by a 22-year-old right-hander making his fourth Major League start."
MattW
LA Times, MyFox LA, NBC LA have each confirmed it.

Just horrible.

This is all CNN will report:

QUOTE
Arrest made in crash that killed 'high-profile person'

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- One person was arrested Thursday after they allegedly fled the scene of a crash that killed three people, including one who police are calling a "high-profile person," according to CNN affiliate KTLA.

The person's identity was not immediately available.

Police said a minivan barreled down a street in Fullerton, California, just south of Los Angeles, and slammed into a silver Mitsubishi about 12:20 a.m. Thursday, the affiliate reported. The silver car then struck a third vehicle before striking a power pole, KTLA said.

Footage from the scene showed the minivan with a smashed front end and the Mitsubishi, which was heavily damaged. Debris littered the intersection where the crash took place, and it was cordoned off with yellow police tape.
Raj (Noble Con)
Not that it compares at all to the much greater loss of a life, but this is really a serious blow to the Angels in purely baseball terms as well, as their pitching staff was already reeling from injuries and was in no shape to lose Adenhart. This could be the difference that costs them the division.
ParticleHustler
True. I don't think it's inappropriate to talk about the pure baseball aspect of this. Another oddly "baseball-first" thought I had was...I'm glad he at least got 1 career win (last year). I was thinking that I'd hate to be Brian Fuentes right now, if I had blown the save on the only game he would have won in his major league career, the night before he died. But he won 1 last year.
Dag Nasty
He was awful young. Drag. Reminds me of the Ken Hubbs story.

First thing I thought of, being an Angel, was Lyman Bostock.

Ozzie Guillen's Comments on Adenhart:

QUOTE
"I feel for more for the family and the organization," Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said. "Unfortunately, this kid is dead. I think they're going to go through tough times, especially when you're in your 20s. You're supposed to die some day, but I don't think you should die that way and that young."

Stay classy Ozzie.

And Ozzie's an idiot.
Raj (Noble Con)
"this kid is dead" is more blunt than it needed to be, but it's more just slightly confusing than unclassy

marginally relevant localized reaction stories are always pretty blah

Kate it's a clumsily worded sentence, yes, but he speaks English pretty decently as a second language, he is not an "idiot"

I agree. Even as a Cubs fan I like Ozzie (or at least really respect his results). I just thought the quote was a little out there. I didn't mean to imply that he was being disrespectful (even though that's what I said).
Raj (Noble Con)
Yeah that's cool. The first time I read it I thought it was disrespectful. I had to read it three or four times before I got the intended meaning.

In other news Porcello looked really good for the first three or four innings before sort of unwinding a bit... not a bad MLB debut, though.
Kate
Eh, I still think Ozzie's an idiot. Every season he says at least a couple things that are rude, politically incorrect, homophobic, racist, etc etc and every year he seems to get a pass on it. And what's with his accent? His English used to be better I think, and the longer he's the manager the worse it seems to get.
Plus, he seats his wife and his girlfriend only a couple rows away from each other at the games, which seems insensitive to me.

Rude, definitely, I'll take that any day over the sanitized PR statements a lot of managers make. Something he shares with Pinella, by the way.

"Politically correct" is talk radio nonsense.

Homophobic, once, yeah, and you think he got a pass on that? He was heavily criticized in the national media and it was brought up over and over again by the local media for the rest of the season. I'm sorry if the Jay Mariotti fans are still sore about it, but I think everyone else has moved on.

Racist, you'll have to be more specific. I don't remember that one.

Pretty sure the longer you live in the United States, the worse your English gets, no matter who you are.
