This man needs to make a straight-up Country album:

I would buy it.

May as well be singing country now. Always wondered how a guy from Jersey developed such a twang.

The kid jock played a wicked good song by Russian Circles on WLUW this morning - I stopped what I was doing & patiently waited for him to relay the song title and now I've forgotten it. Promptly. Natch. I bought a record of theirs last year but this tune ain't on it...I don't think.

My watch battery died yesterday & I keep bending my elbow & shaking my wrist to loosen my watch, right? But it ain't there. No watch - no battery. Phantom muscle memory...

"World In Motion" by New Order was a #5 hit on the US Modern Rock chart.

Speaking of New Order...random question (sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place--didn't want to start a whole new thread): can someone tell me what of their post-80s output is worth checking out? I hadn't listened to any of their albums until recently, but I finally bought Power, Corruption & Lies a few months back, realized it was awesome, & proceeded to get everything from Movement through Technique...none of which has disappointed me yet. How are the later albums/what else should I listen to?

All of it. Republic from 1992 is sort of like Technique-gone-soft, a very smooth iteration of New Order with no rough edges whatsoever. As a result, the album is pretty breezy and some of it is kinda boring -- but it has its great moments, especially the opening track Regret. Of course, they broke up after that record, and nothing came out until 2001.

Get Ready is a bit rockist considering the two records that came before it, but is also even more polished than Regret, so it's like kind of like New Order pretending to be rock. Very very slick, but enjoyable, and some New Order classics including Crystal. Waiting For The Sirens Call is probably the poppiest thing New Order has ever put out, it mostly abandons the "rock" pretension of Get Ready and goes full on dance-pop. Far from perfect but really enjoyable.

Basically, none of these three albums are classics and are at least somewhat inferior to the 80s records; but they all each have enough gems to make the albums worth checking out.

At the risk of inviting ridicule for liking a a Bad Company tune, I must say that "Silver and Gold" is really a very fine song.

The vocals on the Shocking Pinks record are super claustrophobic - like when somebody whispers in your ear & it makes you contort your neck & lower back?

GIRL, YOU LOOK GOOD WHEN YOU BACK THAT ASS UP! YOU'SE A BIG FINE WOMAN WHEN YOU BACK THAT ASS UP!

I just woke up from a dream like 20 minutes ago about living in an antique store in "Christmas town", located close the the mouth of an active volcano, and in this town they would play the song Sugar Baby by Dock Boggs on a loud speaker over and over again. I dunno, it was a little weird.

With the excellent Handsome Furs and Sunset Rubdown discs released this year, I finally got around to relistening to Apologies to the Queen Mary. I'm pretty sure it is one of if not the best debut albums of the decade.

Waiting for a webinar to start and they're playing Rod y Gab's cover of "Orion."

It's on the 'latin' radio station. The only really peppy track, with whistles and bongos. Sadly, too brief.

Squeeze by The Velvet Underground really isn't that bad. It's just generic.

Album covers in the style of old paperbacks.

Did we get that Strokes debut cover in the States? Stupid puritanical fuddy-duddies afraid of a little pleather-on-bare-ass attitude. Warm letherette...warm leatherette....
Vivian Darkbloom

The DJ Shadow album is called Endtroducing

But yeah, those are clever
Ogawa
It's hilarious how innocuous that cover is and yet it had to be changed to... whatever it is the American cover is supposed to be.

Related note, does the Strokes' name refer to brain strokes or caresses?

Wiki says it has something to do with particle collision at the "Big European Bubble Chamber"...clears things right up, don't it?

I'd forgotten they dropped "NY City Cops" off the US release in the wake of 9/11 - shame 'cause it's a helluva song.

Fleet Foxes- Ragged Wood- "Any old lie will do... (/3:45/) ...call me back to..."

^^^all terrific songs. But that particular progression totally deflates me and all the momentum. Just seems like such a "We needed to introduce a fifth chord!"-chord.

WOW! haha doubt you'll catch this because this is such a big thread but a friend and I were talking about how we love that chord change! Fits great lyrically in my opinion.

Which is handy since the best moments on Zoomer are Boeckner's by far. Despite whatever Chrono may say. wink.gif Fine Young Cannibals might be the best Wolf Parade track ever, no? Tight, lumbering, sexy, groovy... Boeckner brought sex to Wolf Parade -- whodathunkit? Meanwhile Krug is off in his little fantasy-land, bless his heart.

Not to disparage Krug or anything, he's an amazing musician, but Boeckner's contributions to Zoomer were far more interesting and broad. He brought new stuff to Wolf Parade, where Krug brought more of the same -- at least that's how I see it.
Ogawa
Agreed abut Boeckner on that record. "Soldier's Grin," "Language City," his parts of "Kissing the Beehive." Magnificent, exuberant stuff. And yeah, "Fine Young Cannibals" is incredible. I've never been as taken with Krug's more laid-back songwriting. Boeckner's singing as well seems a lot more immediately honest and emotional.

And I rode horse-shaped fire, draggin' stereo wire
And we rode chemicals on 'till the breaking of dawn
And I rose over a town raised up by the sound of its drone
And I rode higher than forces that can't make the horses lay down
arkin
"Language City" is my favorite song on the record, and by and large Boeckner's songs are definitely the highlights.

...except "California Dreamer". That song, imo, beats anything Sunset Rubdown.

Fine Young Cannibals is probably my least favourite track on the record. California Dreamer, Grey Estates and Soldier's Grin are the heart of the record for me.

The kid on the local college radio station played a super, super catchy song this morning as we drove down LSD to work - the lyrics were immediately memorable but WLUW's signal starts to go wonky as you get closer to the City & I couldn't hear the artist or song title. Quick search on the computer machine: Rilo Kiley "Portions for Foxes" - terrific tune.
