Beck's Midnight Vultures really drops off during the second half. There's not really any way to credibly maintain that it's his best record.
I don't wanna see no sustained discussion up in this bitch.

I like this thread idea.
There's always been something really different about Your Arsenal (even when compared with Vauxhall)in Morrissey's body of work, and I just figured out why; for the most part, the album (mixing and songwriting wise) doesn't completely emphasize Morrissey's vocals and lyrics, whereas they are the focal point of pretty much everything else he's done.

I fucking hate this one certain chord change. Its inclusion in a song always repulses me, and I have to train myself to just accept it. I can't be bothered to figure out the chord sequence in technical terms at present but here are a few examples off the top my head (and with itunes assistance):
Why?- Yo Yo Bye Bye- the change from "We love and hate like the tattooed fist" into "and all these songs are sung on road trips" (first time's about a minute in)
Eels- Climbing to the Moon- "So she keeps it just like me so that (/GROSS CHORD CHANGE/) it won't get away" (40ish seconds in)
Fleet Foxes- Ragged Wood- "Any old lie will do... (/3:45/) ...call me back to..."
^^^all terrific songs. But that particular progression totally deflates me and all the momentum. Just seems like such a "We needed to introduce a fifth chord!"-chord.

Think that's what it's called...I think coolrock had the correct term...very big in the 70's...Come And Get Your Love - Redbone, You Sexy Thing - Hot Chocolate...tons of others.

Midnite Vultures drops off in the second half, sure, but it's not really a top-heavy record. The first five tracks are just a constant barrage of greatness, but the quality nowhere near diminishes so much as the record just slows down a bit. You've still got plenty of great tracks in the second half (Milk & Honey, Beautiful Way, DEBRA!) that keep up with the lyrical theme (which was oddball even for Beck) and the great hooks on that album. I wont contend that it's his best (That sort of honor should go to Odelay or Mutations) but it's certainly my favorite of his.

Band Creed Reunites for New AlbumBy Jessica Herndon
Originally posted Monday April 27, 2009 09:05 AM EDT
Creed Band Creed Reunites for New AlbumAfter a six-year hiatus, multi-platinum selling Orlando-based rock band Creed have returned with a new record tentatively titled Full Circle.
"We never felt like we weren't together," says frontman Scott Stapp. "We're not looking at this as a reunion. It's more of a rebirth."
Though they stayed in touch through holiday cards and the occasional phone call, the group refrained from recording together in order to, "explore other creative outlets and build the main priority in all of our lives, which is our family," says Stapp.
Indeed, the band has grown up quite a bit, as has Stapp's son Jagger, the muse behind their hit "With Arms Wide Open." "He's not a baby anymore," says the proud papa of the 10-year-old. Stapp now also has a 2-year-old named Milán.
Could another hit about his offspring be on the horizon? Quite possibly. He wrote a tune about his daughter as well, simply titled "Milan Song." "She's my twin soul, my light," he says of his little lady. "I do whatever she wants."
Stapp, who made the initial push for Creed to get back together, says it was awesome to see all the guys in one room again. "I said, 'I love you and if I've ever caused you any pain in your life forgive me.' And they said the same things right back."
With any bad blood dissolved, the guys got back to jamming and planning a summer tour. "We're not trying to stay in a certain place or conform to where we left off," says Stapp. "The music is fresh, edgy, raw, passionate, honest and it rocks."
"It's just the right time and we're all excited!"

That great band/one record thread's had me thinkin' - while snooping around the internet to see how many songs were on the Pailhead record (I don't think the E.P. qualifies with 4 songs) I learned Naked Raygun drummer Eric Spicer played on the album!
Great rock doc (aren't they all, though)

There's obviously a huge chunk of the 'story' missing without John Haggerty's participation but its an imperfect world.

I don't understand why Death Cab is supposedly so especially emo. Sure their lyrics aren't the happiest, but neither are the majority of groups out there (let's face it, it's a lot easier to sound articulate if your lyrics are depressing). Gibbard puts a lot more effort and care into his lyrics than most, and generally you can't really take any one line of his and start cutting your wrists (yeah, he does have some "I'll follow you into the dark"'s, but even that's a helluva lot better than most mainstream stuff). They have their fair share of upbeat tunes as well. I'd definitely have to call DCfC one of the most unfairly bashed bands of recent years.
Speaking of lyrics, I think the worst I heard all last year was "Beautiful things and bloodshot eyes" by Foo Fighters. Despicable. Except I just looked it up and I guess it's "Beautiful veins", so not quite as bad, but still really bad.

I'm listening to The College Dropout in full for the first time in a long while and I am enjoying "The New Workout Plan" much more than I remember.
As much as I am a Kanye-fanboy, it is still kind of insane that he went from The College Dropout to 808s in four and a half years. They are both great, but there is just this huge gap sonically between the two.

"This mellow fat chick just put my spine out of place" should be "This mellow fat chick just went and sat on my face" ('Suffragette City').
similarly,
"All the things you bought for her, putting up your temperature" should really be "All the things you got from her, could not get enough of her" or "All the things you bought for her, could not get her temperature". ('Pump it Up')
No IMHO or anything like that - the above is all qft.

listen to his verse in Keri Hilson's "Knock You Down", more Michael Jackson references. Kanye must have like 4 different songs where he mentions the King of Pop (plus the P.Y.T. sample on "Good Life" of course)
"The New Workout Plan" is also a song that continues to impress through and through. at least for me it was never a song i got obsessed with so it's always retained this steady undercurrent of greatness that flashes every time i hear it. it's somehow fresher of a listen than some of the albums other tracks. the skit leading into it is also indispensable. amazing combination with that skit and then the song.

The kid jock played a wicked good song by Russian Circles on WLUW this morning - I stopped what I was doing & patiently waited for him to relay the song title and now I've forgotten it. Promptly. Natch. I bought a record of theirs last year but this tune ain't on it...I don't think.
