Any of you SOMBies compete in any type of race?

Today I'm competing in my first ever race as an adult. As part of a team, I'm racing in Bend, OR's Pole Pedal Paddle.

There are seven legs:
An apline ski leg down the Mt. Bachelor
A 8 km nordic ski
A 22 mile bike from Mt. Bachelor into Bend
A 10 km run
A mile and a half paddle on the Deschutes River
A 1/3 mile sprint to the finish

I'll be biking, canoeing, and doing the sprit. I'm pretty excited about. Should be fun.

I'm interested if anyone else on here does races?

Good luck!

There are a lot of runners on this board and a corresponding thread somewhere if someone wants to search for it. I do several 5ks every year. I've also done several 8ks and I did the Soldier Field 10 mile race a couple years ago. If I remain injury free (I have a recurring hip injury) I'm considering the Chicago Half Marathon in the fall. I don't do it for the competition, however. I just do it to prove to myself that I can.

I just got into racing earlier this year. I recently ran in a team triathalon. I ran the 10K portion of the race. It was actually a lot of fun, and my team took 4th place (there were only 20 teams competing).

I am working towards running a half-marathon in October. We'll see how it goes, but when I go running I tend to run about 6 miles, so I now need to just work on adding a few more miles I suppose.

Just got home and heading out to a BBQ to celebrate. We finished in 2 hours 40 minutes, which is decent for a three person time, especially for all of our first times. I rode the 22 miles down into town in 40 minutes, which I was super excited about. That's averaging 33 miles an hour... and there was decent climb!

Anyways, I'm going to be doing my first 10K in July, which I'm excited about. I've never done one before... any advise for training?

Just look at the results online and my team got 6th out of 10 in our age division and 453rd out of 906 overall. I'm really happy about that considering that it was our first time and we're in the same divison as teams with 7 people (which means they have a different person for each leg rather than each person doing at least two legs each, like our team).

I only got a few responses when I started this thread almost a year ago. So apparently there aren't that many people who do races on the board.

I'm currently training for my first triathlon. I'm going for an Olympic distance (0.93mile Swim | 24.8mile Bike | 6.2mile Run) in late June. I plan on completing a 16 week program for beginner triathletes leading up to the event. I'm not looking to be competitive time-wise, but just to finish and set a baseline to try to improve on later.

I'll also compete in the Pole Pedal Paddle again this year in May.

Any one else doing races or training for one?

I ran the Rock and Roll Half Marathon last August, and I've already signed up for the Chicago Marathon on 10-10-10. Prior to then, I'm planning to run many races in preparation this summer.

I've been meaning to get around to actually run a 5k, but they all seem to be scheduled way too early for my tastes. The last time I actually ran a race was as a junior in high school (3200m). For the time being, I am following a 16-week 5k training schedule (I'm at 5 runs and 30-35 miles/week), so in theory, about three months from now, I should find an actual race to compete in. I'm just so used to running being a solitary activity that it'd be weird to run with other people again.

I don't run, but I do ride. Have done many organized rides over the past couple years, but I do plan to do the Tour de Cure (diabetes) ride up in Milwaukee in June this year.

Nk you & I will be in the same place. Awesome.

Misses ap does 1/2 marathons (to me, this is half of nothing as 13 miles is 13 miles!) thirteen miles is a long as way to run if you're not being chased by a mountain cat (IMHO) but, gotta support the team you know. I'll actually spend he evenings on the deschutes for the salmon fly hatch.... Mmmmmmm big bugs

Nice. When are you guys going to be here? Which race is she running?

Finished my first triathlon last Sunday. It went really, really well. I was 171st out of 514 total people participating. I was 147th in the swim, 153rd in the bike, and 276th in the run. It was super fun and I plan to do another one in two weeks.

In the process of training for this event (and beginning to really watch I what I eat) I lost 43 pounds.

Here are my times:

Overall: 2:58:48
1500 meter swim: 0:28:50
Swim to bike transition: 2:53
28 mile bike: 1:26:05
Bike to run transition (including peeing): 2:21
6.2 mile run: 0:58:38

Anyone else training for or doing a race of any kind?
