Replacements — Well, Some Of Them — Reunite For New Songs
03.30.2006 8:12 AM EST

Paul Westerberg and Tommy Stinson team up for two new tracks.

The Pixies have buried the hatchet, and now it seems the other 1980s band no one thought would ever reunite has apparently done just that — well, at least part of the band is working together. Legendary '80s Minneapolis rockers the Replacements have recorded two new songs for an upcoming greatest hits album, Don't You Know Who I Think I Was?: The Best of the Replacements, which is due out June 13.

In addition to songs selected from every one of the band's seven albums and their 1982 Stink EP, the 20-track compilation features two new songs recorded in December by singer/guitarist Paul Westerberg and bassist Tommy Stinson accompanied by session drummer Josh Freese, according to a Rhino press release. The first new songs from the band in 16 years are "Message to the Boys" and "Pool & Dive," which Westerberg wrote specifically for inclusion on the compilation.

Former guitarist Slim Dunlap — who replaced original guitarist Bob Stinson, who died of a drug overdose in 1995 — was not included in the sessions. At press time it was unclear if former drummer Chris Mars participated.

Known for their DIY ethic, notoriously unhinged drunken live shows and huge influence on the 1980s alt-rock scene, the 'Mats never achieved commercial success. But many of the beloved tales of rumpled dead-enders and never-been'ers that fans fell in love with, such as "Color Me Impressed," "I Will Dare," "Unsatisfied" and "Here Comes the Regular" show up on Don't You Know. A 2-CD set entitled All for Nothing ... Nothing for All featuring several of those songs plus rarities and outtakes was released in 1997.

According to a recent Rhinocast podcast interview with Tommy Stinson, still in the works is a comprehensive box set that will feature all of the band's albums along with bonus tracks and "things that have been in the vault for a while."

Stinson said both he and Westerberg have been listening to tapes and outtakes to find material to include in the set, which is also slated to include a DVD with a number of the band's live performances from "Saturday Night Live" to England's "Old Grey Whistle Test" music show. A series of expanded reissues of the band's albums is also in the works, but not yet scheduled.

Though rumors have floated for years that the Replacements might get back together, animosities and divergent career paths have frequently scuttled the reunion. Since the band's breakup in 1991, Mars has increasingly focused on his painting, Westerberg has toggled between writing his signature earnest, singer/songwriter pop tunes and grittier, bluesy albums under the name Grandpa Boy, while Stinson has fronted a series of power pop outfits (Bash & Pop, Perfect) and has been a member of Guns N' Roses for the past eight years. Dunlap has recorded a pair of solo CDs since the Replacements' acrimonious split.

Stinson said in the Rhinocast interview that the thaw in his relationship with Westerberg began when the former Replacements singer called Stinson in to play bass on the soundtrack to the animated film "Open Season," which Westerberg is scoring. Stinson said that gig led to him being asked to score the upcoming Jennifer Garner romantic comedy "Catch and Release." There was no word at press time whether the new songs would lead to any other new recordings or live appearances.

Mars was there though, right? He just didn't play drums. Why not include Dunlap?
BobtheSquid
Yeah, Mars sang back-up. He apparently doesn't drum anymore.
without_opinion
wow, awesome.

that's pretty funny to claim that stinson's been a part of guns n' roses for the last 8 years. 99% of people don't know that guns n' roses has existed for the last 8 years.
Uncle Remus
Well, he has been contractually with GNR...but he's barely spent anytime as an actual member. I'm pretty sure he's out of that now, but I could be wrong.
BobtheSquid
There's been some rumors that GNR, including Stinson, are in LA rehearsing for their European festival dates this summer.
Uncle Remus
There are rumors that album is coming out, too.
tjenz
GnR has sold a shit load of tickets for a European tour this summer.
Stinson is still in GnR

I don't know about y'all's thoughts, but wouldn't this work better as a 2-CD set? There are so many great 'Mats songs that one CD is not enough.
Undercooked Sausage
i would buy a mats box in a heartbeat considering everything i've ever heard about them almost makes them one of my favorite bands by default.
birdistheword
Two discs would've been better. At the very least, I would've included these:
"Johnny's Gonna Die"
"Sixteen Blue"
"Androgynous"
"Little Mascara"
"Valentine"
"Anywhere's Better Than Here"
"Talent Show" (or "Portland")
"Sadly Beautiful"
"All Shook Down"
"Nobody"

There is already a 2-CD set out (All For Nothing/Nothing At All), but it just covers the Warner period and the second disc is a rarities. Yeah, this should probably be a double disc, especially with the Ryko stufff on it, but at the same time I think that Rhino's point with this is to have a single disc for new fans and hopefully hook them so they'll buy the big box set when it comes out.
The Good Dr Bill
pretty solid tracklisting--got some minor quibbles, but no major ones, which, when compared to that DP album especially, Is certainly a compliment.
Saskadelphia
Yeah, a two-disc set might have been better, but this could be the best single-disc best-of set I've seen since Blur's.
The Sheck
Mars hasn't picked up a pair of drumsticks for at least ten years, while Slim has gone on record saying his time with the 'Mats wasn't all that fun. He chose not to record the new material.

It's funny how people are flipping out over this, when Mono, Stereo, and parts of Folker feature Tommy (uncredited) and Paul recording together. Guess it's all about a name...
solace
actually that was just a rumor about Tommy playing on Mono & Stereo (he didn't), but you're right, he did play on 2 tracks on Folker.

Very much looking forward to the box set - the DVD certainly sounds interesting.

I put together a three disc comp of demo's based on everything they ever recorded outside of the other 'official' releases. A few popped up on AFN/NAA but I don't think there's much else to pull from other than the litany of covers they did live.

I'd be just as satisified if they toured again. Hell, just play Grant Park for free again. tongue.gif

Nice! That's worth Gary getting a boner over!

I have a four-disc best of that I put together that I'll upload if I can figure out how to do the artwork.

ANY REPLACEMENTS COMPILATION IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT "ANDROGYNOUS"!!!

Nah, just kidding. But, seriously, why does "Unsatisfied" receive so much love? As far as the ballady Let It Be songs go, "Sixteen Blue" and "Androgynous" kick that song's ass all over the place.

But what exactly is the point in complaining about "best of" albums, whose purpose is generally to convert the unitiated fan into a lover of this particular artist's music? If ALL the best songs are included, there won't be any great surprises for someone who decides they like the "best of" so much that they'll go out and buy all the albums. What if Prisoners of Love had "Sudden Organ," "Double Dare," "Decora," "Cherry Chapstick," and "Moby Octopad"? By leaving them off, the thrill of hearing the albums becomes even greater. I thought about this once a while back and it seemed semi-interesting.

Chris Mars - "Horseshoes and Hand Grenades" was a great CD....Monkey Sees is a great song

If you're into 30 second teaser clips, the new songs (and all the songs actually) are here:

Mats Rhino Page

You can see the cover as well. Sounds like...The Replacements. I swear Paul can churn those songs out like clockwork, I've enjoyed his renaissance with the more acoustic-based Stereo and Folker, but it's good to hear good rock again from him too. Mono, which was nothing but rock, was awesome.
solace
wow.... this feels really weird to hear... but they sound pretty dang good...

Yeah, after listening to Let It Be nonstop for the last day or so, I'm inclined to agree.

Jesus christ, this fucking shit is blowing my mind. I haven't had something like that happen for awhile.

i think "unsatisfied" pretty much sums up westerberg's weird drunk-dreamer-loser-champion attitude while he was in this band... that's why.

Yeah, brah. Let It Be was one of the first, um, "underground" ( happy.gif ) records that I ever heard. It was also one of the shortest records that I had ever heard. Thus, I listened to it a crapload. Amazing album.

I think you mentioned awhile ago I should listen to this band, but then I saw Let It Be for sale and it was like 14 bucks!! So I waited until I found a used copy. I'm sort of regretting not buying all their albums like a year ago.

I didn't hear the song on Rome. All I heard was Rome and his fans bitching that Paul Westerberg didn't show up.

That's what I'm talking about! Thanks for getting this, song sounds pretty good. I'm always a bit apprehensive when bands "reunite" for a couple best-of songs, but this is better than I expected. No reunion tour, please, it would not work out.
UselessRocker

"Message to the Boys" is pretty great. It does sound pretty classic mid-period 'Mats, like something that could have been thrown onto Pleased to Meet Me as a solid album track. This song seriously is bringing such a smile to my face right now. It's funny - I've liked Paul's recent solo work okay and all and it's not like he's aged horribly. Yet when this song started, I wasn't listening to a 40-something Paul tossing off some throwaway song with Tommy... I'm listening to the (almost) Replacements. Paul sounds no older on this track than he does on "Alex Chilton".

I'm really glad that they decided to do this. They could have easily just released another comp with nothing new. And I do think that a proper "Best-of" collection has been necessary for a while - for people who want to get into the band & for people too lazy to burn their own. I know it wouldn't quite fit the mythology of the band and all, but fuck it, I'd give anything to see the reunited (almost) 'Mats once. If Coachella can get the guys to reunite next year, I'll be a very, very happy camper.
Undercooked Sausage
I would go to Coachella to see this band.

Paul is still "living the dream" and God love that and I love that and try to emulate it in my life -- and fuck corporations for looking to screw him for every little non-sueable cent. I think I loathe you if you do.
Hans Christian Anderson
bump.

so the big star box set and the recent SO show on them has actually gotten me on more of a mats kick than anything, lol. i've had let it be for years and have always enjoyed it, even thought it to be the classic its commonly thought to be. however, until recently i've never sought anything else of theirs out. i'm starting w/ Tim and i can barely get into it because "hold my life" is SO good, and i just listen to that one like 500 times in a row.

where do mats fan places hold my life? its not one i see being written about a lot or on "best of" mats song listings or anything? however, i think this song basically holds up w/ anything on let it be. just wanna hear some thoughts on that songs awesomeness in particular.
The Sheck
Fantastic opener. Spot on saying it's underrated.
