I wonder if Dave's numbers have anything to do with the Macca appearance (remember when Jay got a permanent boost from Hugh Grant?) and/or the Pailin controversy -- no bad press as long as they spell your name right.

It's only a matter of time before the consultants and the market researchers begin to over-critique the show and homogenize him like they did to Letterman.
you really think those people affect dave that much?
Yes I do. The David Letterman on NBC and the first 3 years on CBS was a comedic mind that I admired. Now his bits and monologue jokes have become stale and safe since the Hugh Grant appearance. Occasionally you can see how witty of a guy he is through interviews with Bill O'Reilly, Paris Hilton, Sarah Palin apology etc. but to me, watching him be so tame and lacking in style is a soulcrushing experience.

head scratching musical segments
That's the weirdest thing about the new show to me. Sure, they'd had some cool stuff like Neko Case and Andrew Bird on, but I've seen a ton of credible research that says that musical guests, whoever they are, lead more people to turn off the show than anything else. Other than if someone like the Rolling Stones are on, it doesn't matter who is booked, people are going to turn off the show. Maybe it is just because it is toward the end of the show anyway, but booking Disney-pop acts isn't going to bring in (or keep) any more of an audience than booking hipster friendly acts.
If anything, booking "cool" musical guests should be seen as some way to establish credibility, because its not like because it is not like your going to lose any more viewers at the end of the night with a band people don't really know about yet.

Wow, did anyone see some dude named Jason Aldean? He was on last Thursday night. Apparently his some top 40 country guy and his band was totally laughable... they played a balled type, lame country song and the lead guitar player was standing in a classic rock power stance the entire time while the drummer was swinging like Tommy Lee and doing lame stick tricks. It was hilarious.

I've yet to watch Conan.
I'm a big Letterman fan and record his show daily.
Also have been recording Fallon's show since it began.
Couple nights ago he had Holly Hunter on. The Roots intro music was the yodeling theme from Raising Arizona.
Holly got a big kick out of that.
It always bugs me when a guest doesn't acknowledge the intro song done by Schaeffer, The Roots, Weinberg, or whoever. Which is most of the time. They are often times clever and I always wonder if the guest even gets it.

I feel like Conan's show has barely been toned down at all. Still lots of odd, off-beat humor and raunch sexual references. Can't imagine the Leno diehards are happy.

i think a large part of it is he's just getting older. he made a comment sometime after the heart trouble that his approach to the show had changed because of it. didn't want to do the off-location bits and such. just didn't like the hassle. that had probably increasingly been his mindset prior to all of that too. also, if anything he's become more acerbic with time, which i don't think the consultants are proponents of

Conan O’Brien won’t appear on American Idol 9’s Idol Gives Back special in about a month because NBC won’t let him.
In a story about Conan’s discussions with Fox about hosting a late-night show on the network, The Hollywood Reporter says that “O’Brien has been approached to take part in Fox’s ‘Idol Gives Back’ special April 21” and that “the invitation to O’Brien came not from Fox but from ‘American Idol’ producer 19 Entertainment.”
But the paper says that “invitation was taken to NBC to determine whether that network would allow it under its settlement with the talk show host. The answer was no, as the moratorium on any TV appearances by O’Brien doesn’t expire until May 1.”
So, the network that screwed him and dumped him in favor of that not-at-all-funny hack Jay Leno is now preventing him from participating in a charity event on a competing network. I understand the contractual prohibition, and that Idol Gives Back isn’t exactly a telethon—it’s an episode that Fox wants to draw as many viewers to as possible—but this still seems very déclassé.

I don't think I'll be watching Conan, over the Daily Show, unless Stewart is a rerun.

I've said it before people are pretty dumb for as smart as they are. Conan (who went to Harvard, I didn't go to College) is going to TBS at 11pm in as close to a no win situation as one can get. Basic cable and taking on John Stewart, crazy plan of action, if you ask me. I mean he had the Tonight Show anything else is less than. If I had the Tonight Show even for a day I would never do a talk show again. I think he should of done a more variety type show- Rosie did one that started out ok until her true personality started to turn people off. Tho in reality he belongs on HBO.

I actually think Conan on TBS makes sense. They will market the hell out of him on both TBS and TNT and he'll be able to get a lot more of his target audience on TBS than on NBC. Plus, he will 100% control of the show, which he didn't have with the Tonight Show. He'll be himself and do a good job. Plus, ratings on TBS are totally different than ratings on a network station. TBS will be totally happy with the audience he pulls.

FOX wanted him, but their affiliates didn't. How much of an ego drain is it when the affiliates think Two and a Half Men reruns are a safer bet for ad revenue than a late-night show?
no magnets
Apr 25 2010, 10:42 PM
"seinfeld" reruns actually are a safer bet for the affiliates. first, they've already paid the "seinfeld" syndication fees for the next few years. they have a history of success with those reruns in that time slot too. it's just business.

Oh, and I'm surprised no one has mentioned/discussed what Conan being on TBS does for his musical guests. I'm hoping that he shifts back to having more unique and indie bands like on the Late Night days instead of the (mostly) crap bands he had on the Tonight Show.
