I guess, but 7:30 is my only chance for reruns and that's baseball or dog walk time or both.

The Twittertracker bit last night was pretty good. Ditto the ending to the Hanks interview.

Colbert's writing staff mops the floor with both of them anyways.

is it just me or is colbert clearly better than stewart?
MattW
No it's been true since at least about the time when Colbert spoke at the correspondent's dinner. He's quicker on his feet and is a better performer. And it usually comes down to the writing, and no one's touching Colbert staff right now.

It's not you, Colbert is the man...I do like Jon's delivery more.

i think it's more than the writing. colbert's just fucking brilliant. and stewart begs for laughs/reflexively laughs at his own jokes too much. of course, if colbert didn't exist, stewart would be head and shoulders above any would-be competitor

But if you think about the majority of the first segments of TDS these days, you have:

-Introduction of news story
-Spliced sound bites
-Stewart looking shocked or put off
-Smart ass quip

That's more of a photoshop and riff job than a writing job. Colbert's bits are more thoroughly meaty and multi-dimensional because the writing is there.

True... Stewart is just primer for Colbert

Watching last night's Conan right now.

So much better than the first show. Funnier, less awkward, everything. Even gradually incorporating more classic "Late Night" touches.

Fantastic stuff.

Twitter Tracker had me laughing like an idiot.

Loving the new Tonight Show so far. Very few complaints come to mind except Tom Hanks spastic outbursts. It all seems especially nice after putting up with Fallon for a while so I could see Steve Martin play banjo.
Efrim
Others are right though, I would like to see more for Andy to do besides being an Ed McMahon human laugh track. I like that role for him, just expand it.

"In the Year 3000" was alright.

I was thinking more Paul Schaffer than Ed McMahon. But yes, put him on the couch.

Aside from the musical guests the new Conan has been pretty good. Not as good as Colbert but good enough for NBC.

Just got back from a week long vacation without TV and was just catching up on the first week of Conan (though my damned TiVo deleted the first episode!) and I'm enjoying these episodes.

Also, the bit he did on Friday parodying Jay's (lame attempt at being sentimental) Tonight Show Kids segment was hilarious.

i think conan might lose his youthful, lovable creative side now

all this new power he has been given

i hope he doesn't turn into an asshole like letterman

i've always thought he was really funny and not standard at all comedically

tonight there was something weird in his facial expressions
and the interview between him and Larry David felt tense

also the band was fucking horrible. terrible.

Also the Larry David interview wasn't tense. It was a Larry David interview. I expected nothing less. It was comedic brilliance.

It seems as though the musical guest segment is installing a tradition of crappiness, just as an afterthought to everything else. Sounds like they need a new booker.

Also, what did you guys think of The Dead Weather last night?
C.I.
it really sucks that the musical guests took such a downturn, because Late Nite usually had pretty good artists, for the most part. it just sucks because in the more popular time slot you need to pander to the bigger audience.

I watched the opening monologue last night and it was pretty bad. Do they have to work with the same writers that Leno had or something? Honest question.

No, but the monologue has never seemed anything more than an obligation in terms of the Johnny Carson tradition to Conan or Letterman, yet it's an enormous chunk of their shows. At least Conan is throwing in video sketches to break it up.

Anybody see Death Cab? Not a bad performance... but what the hell is with Ben Gibbard's weird looking hair? Does Zooey like that?

That picture still breaks my heart. Why Zooey? WHY!!!!?

Dave Tops 'Tonight Show' for 2 Straight Weeks (First Time Since 1998); Demo Gap With Conan Shrinking

I'm digesting all the info, but here are the late night viewer totals for the week of 7/13-7/17:

Nightline: 3.743 million
Late Show: 3.454 million
The Tonight Show: 2.713 million
---
Late Late Show: 1.478 million
Jimmy Fallon: 1.269 million
---
First time Late Show has topped Tonight Show in consecutive weeks since Feburary 1998 (when CBS had Nagano Olympics).

Demo gap continues to shrink between Late Show and Tonight Show.. Now only .2 in 18-49. Down to .5 in 18-34.

Late Show up vs same week last year. +17% in viewers. +10% in 25-54. +14% in 18-49. Even in 18-34.
---
CBS' late night momentum extending to 12:30 AM. Ferguson tops Fallon in viewers by largest margin since Fallon's March premiere. The shows tied in 25-54.

Ferguson up vs same week last year. +8% in viewers. +20% in 25-54. Even in 18-49 and 18-34.

Watching the show as of late has been getting disapointing. Flat jokes on the monologue (and he knows it, but goofy body gestures won't save him forwever), meh guests, and head scratching musical segments (every act this week made me say, "Who the fuck is that?"). All the good stuff is still the post-monologue, pre-first guest material though.
tjenz
Leno is obviously being set up to fail in prime time.
If Conan doesn't improve in the ratings, will NBC bring Leno back to Tonight?
Angrimorfee
Promos all look like "The Jay Walking Hour". EWWW.

Yeah, this about says it. I flip over to Conan after the 2nd Colbert segment which is about when the post-monologue sketches get started. Then he says, "stay tuned for Jonah Hill or Meredith Viera" and I think 'Really? First guest Jonah Hill? If you keep this up Letterman's going to take the lead back.' Apparently he already has. I still think the writing on the sketches is pretty good, but the 'I used to live in New York, now I live in LA' motif needs to be dropped. It's only a matter of time before the consultants and the market researchers begin to over-critique the show and homogenize him like they did to Letterman.

I don't think they'll make a Leno switch, though.

you really think those people affect dave that much?

seems to me it's the guest lists that are the primary culprits when it comes to conan's ratings. he was never gonna match jay's numbers though
