The Swell Season, the Oscar-winning duo of Frames frontman Glen Hansard and Czech ingénue Marketa Irglova, are putting the finishing touches on ‘Strict Joy,’ (Sept 29/Anti- Records), the follow-up to their beloved, surprise hit 2007 film and gold-certified soundtrack ‘Once.’ The twelve new, original songs on ‘Strict Joy’ were recorded last year and document a time of great change.

‘Strict Joy,’ which borrows its name from a work by Irish poet James Stephens, was co-produced by Hansard and Peter Katis (The National, Interpol), and recorded mostly at Katis’ Tarquin Studios in Bridgeport, CT. In addition to Hansard and Irglova, the album features Frames members Colm Mac Con Iomaire (violin), Joe Doyle (bass), Rob Bochnik (guitar), Graham Hopkins (percussion) plus guitarist Javier Mas (Leonard Cohen), pianist Thomas Bartlett (Doveman), percussionist Chad Taylor (Chicago Underground Duo), horn players Steven Bernstein and Clark Gayton from Levon Helm’s band, and others.

‘STRICT JOY’ TRACK LISTING
1. Low Rising
2. Feeling the Pull
3. In These Arms
4. The Rain
5. Fantasy Man
6. Paper Cup
7. High Horses
8. The Verb
9. I Have Loved You Wrong
10. Love That Conquers
11. Two Tongues

so bummed we're stuck with Swell Season for now and will have to wait quite some time for a new Frames album/tour sad.gif
_______
agreed...

aren't the frames officially done now?
Merle
No, they're playing on this record.

yep, and touring as Swell Season's backing band in the US this fall.

why can't they just open up as The Frames and blow everyone the fuck away and show all these new SS fans what they can actually do? (and then i could duck out early)

The Frames, in my mind, fell apart after For the Birds. Everything since then, live and in the studio, just has not been able to compete. Their run from '99-'02 was about as good as any band at any level that I've ever seen, and they've never come close to reproducing that in the past 7 years.

while i agree Burn The Maps was a step down, i really loved The Cost for the most part.

my fave records are still Dance The Devil, Fitzcarraldo, & For The Birds, but live they've never disappointed me.
Alright Still
Ah, I'm excited for this record. I thought the Swell Season would have been over since they broke up, but I'm happy to see this record is coming out.

They are so brilliant live. Seriously one of the best live shows I've been to.

have you seen The Frames live?

i dug Swell Season, but it was like 1/10th as intense and great as any of the half dozen Frames shows i've seen.

Totally with you Solace, but I did think the Swell Season shows I saw last year were fantastic as well.
Once I got over the fact I wasn't seeing the Frames proper, at least.

It's just a different feel and energy, but I'd definitely rank the better SS shows I've seen up there.
Though I'm hoping alot of the Once fans move on, or at least aren't as annoying as some of them were before.

I thought Swell Season fell apart when Hansard and Irglová ended their relationship?

If only...

I'll admit I wasn't aware of the Frames prior to hearing the Swell Season, but SS led me to the Frames who are a far superior band.

kind of surprised this topic wasn't bumped (maybe someone made a new thread?)

but a vbr leaked and also the album can be streamed from NPR

played it once and I loved it.

"Strict Joy" narrowly edged out "Still Banging the Jailbait Mail Order Bride" for album title.

I bet it would get a lot more attention if it had the latter title; it would probably get mixed up with some other google and amazon searches.

the VBR is a webrip FWIW.

i like it more than the first Swell Season full length, but it certainly still isn't The Frames...
there's 3-4 dull/boring ass songs too tho, and i don't really care for any songs Marketa sings lead on this one.

first song is probably the best, even if it's a total Van Morrison ripoff (complete w/ the horns from Into The Mystic)

Do you mind pointing out where the aforementioned VBR might be ?

this is

oops, it's "vo" not a "vbr" (or variable-bit-rate).

But from the comments where I found it, it's not a webrip. I guess no matter, the rip quality sounds good enough for me.

v0 is a type of VBR
solace
the -V0 rip on what.cd is legit.

the one that was going around earlier in the week was def a transcode of the NPR stream.
