Greetings esteemed members of the board. I am just now getting into Sigur Rós despite having Ágætis Byrjun on my hard drive for some time now. Is this a good place to start? If not where should I go? Feel free to share other thoughts on the band as I know very little about them. Stay classy.

I would strongly suggest you start and stop with that album.

Ignore above poster. All of their albums are good. AB is a good starting point. () is slower and more depressing. Takk is bubbly and more uplifting. Med Sud has more traditionally structured pop songs. Von is unlike any of the other albums and isn't accessible, but I like it.

AB and ( ) are their only essential releases. takk is where i lost interest since it only has 2-3 good songs. but, oh my god, AB and ( ) are tremendous.

Haven't felt compelled to play Sigur Ros in forever.

This pretty much says it. All their albums are great. Med Sud was way underrated last year imo. AB is clearly the best.

I'm partial to Takk. At the very least, you should listen to the track Glosoli.

Takk is great. Some of their most accessible stuff on there.

Also "Inní mér syngur vitleysingur" was one of last year's best singles IMO, so I'd definitely recommend checking out Med Sud. But yeah, as already said, AB is clearly their standout record.

agree that all their albums are quite essential...they all offer different listening experiences and while AB is easily their most complete effort it also takes the most work as a listener...i actually would suggest starting with med sud, then takk and then AB leaving () for last mostly because i think its their worst effort (but still pretty great) and then if you feel like it Von, though that album can be left alone

i spent many a night in college listening to AB as i fell asleep, and id suggest tryin that as well...extremely calming and peaceful

i remember reading an article way back when it came out and they were talking about how they played the album for a bunch of mentally retarded children and the kids responded saying the music sounded like heaven...when asked why they played the music for them the band responded saying that theyre the most innocent human beings on earth and able to understand and respond without preconception or bias
Hans Christian Anderson
i think ( ) their best, AB is their legacy album, takk is a mixed bag thats basically just a lesser AB, and the newest one is about half great. specifically the first half, which is probably the most exciting music they've made since ( ), and then the rest is the most boring music they've ever made.

but yeah, AB and especially ( ) are un-fucking-real.
Liffey
Untitled 8 might be their best song. It's also oddly great to fall asleep to, if I put it on at night I rarely make it to the halfway point.

Also I think Takk deserves more credit. It kind of plods towards the end, but structurally I think it's their most well balanced album.

I'll probably be scorned for this, but I consider Sigur Ros to be a clear pick for top 10 essential bands this decade. That's based purely on music, not on singles or pop culture, like a lot of the bullshitters around here would base their choices on.

i've seen sigur ros twice and apparently seen their only bad shows ever because i was a little disappointed with them the first time and then extremely disappointed the second time. but that untitled 8 (when it was known as the "pop song") was amazing the first time. that was the tour when they didn't have strings with them and, wow, it ruled.

double true

count me in the "untitled 8 is the best SR song" group as well.

dunno about one of the flagship groups of this decade, but certainly a great one. ( ) will make my top 15 records of the decade, maybe top 10.

Brilliant.

Surely there has to be some overlap between mentally retarded Sigur Rós fans and the type of person who would honestly hammer out a sentence like this:

what Sigur Ros laid out on AB is genius/creativity and vision/precision at the highest level. they're truly on another level with AB and (). they'll never top these two unfortunately

Caught his show on Friday in San Diego and it was one of the most stunning shows i have seen in a long long time! The visuals along with Jonsi's unbelievable voice had the entire crowd in a trance for the entire 90 minute set. Will definitely be tuning in for this!
