What is interesting is that, on the first 2 pages of this forum we now have threads regarding RHCP, an album battle featuring Hole, and a thread about Courtney Love & Nirvana songs.

Basically, heroin addicts that made shitty music in the 90s.

Okay and...
hinsey21
pretty boring, even for the peppers...i've said it once and i'll say it again, this album will be a disaster

also glad to see they think there the best thing that happened since nirvana

haha wanks
Ego Tripper
it sucks

I'm looking forward to this. I dug that song. I think I might be the only person that liked their last couple albums better than any of their early stuff though so YMMV.

The video was really good too. It cracked me up seeing them spoof all those bands.
r.i.p.
effect comeback of the year: the flanger.

anthony keidis as "hendrix" = Prince, oddly.
robbie
I used to love them. they should have stopped years ago
Sickpup
so awful that i can't even come up with words to describe it.
Music Saves
But wasn't the coda at the end with the guitar soloing and most importantly no singing pretty rad? Seriously, best part of the song, overall it blows.
Sickpup
i just hope keidis doesn't actually write out those lyrics before he sings them. if he actually needs to put thought into what winds up in these songs, i feel bad for him. he's a walking public service announcement for staying in school...

I dig the solo and like the song alright. and its the peppers guys, what the fuck to you shits expect.

oh yeah, being negative is the "new in"

fucks.

I'm not saying its an amazing song....but why shit all over an average song......better than anything on the last 2 albums. (I guess)

sorry I used to be a huge fan and I wish they would funk the house down like the fastjams they did back in the day. but for a single its listenable.
Rocks And Blows
I thought Californication was a really good album, but the last one was awful and the double album will be a wreck, I also some them live about 6 years ago and they were ayful, Stone Temple Pilots blew them away

I owe you one anyway..

mix is low but quality is good.

By the Way was actually pretty good, unless you just hate the Chili Peppers or prefer them when they're "crazy and funky". It's a very '80s record, with the keyboards, guitar tones, etc. And having Frusciante provide some Beach Boys layered back-up vocals was nice. For better or worse (and I will argue better), they've relied on a similar formula ever since "Under the Bridge" proved that they could actually write pretty songs. They hav some pretty ballad-y stuff and then they throw in some rockers to show that they can still do that stuff. Sadly, the "rockers" usually end up proving that they can't really do that anymore and they come off as really forced. The dullest moments on By the Way are things like "Throw Away Your Television" and the breakdown of "By the Way". Kiedis' lyrics are almost always awful and the subject matter is always the same: he's from L.A., he knows a lot about drugs, throw in a girl's name, throw in some silly rhyming made-up words for the "funky breakdown" parts of songs CUNTZILLA! BREAK DILLA! HIM BO FLY FO I'MAGONNAGIT'ER!

Anyway, I don't think there's one positive thing I can say about the new record so far. The album cover looks lame, the video is lame (how many people have done the band parody schtick?), the song is lifeless and lame.... yowch. Got a real bad feeling about this double-album. I doubt I'll be able to get thru it all. I didn't even watch the whole "Dani California" video, i was that unimpressed and eager to get back to listening to Prince on my iTunes.

I've always seen the RHCP as a bit of a dumb guilty pleasure. I'd never count them as one of my favorite bands, but sometimes I just feel like listening to dumb music. This song is no exception and I'm quite liking it by their standards.

Love or hate em...Frusiciante is capable of tearing some shit up on the guitar.
Midnite_Vulture
Okay, I'm liking this one a little more upon second listen. Still not quite sure what this bodes for the rest of the album though. Their lead singles are typically stronger than this.
r.i.p.
yancy, I got your back. I grew up with this band from Freaky Stylee on, so there's a weird soft spot inside me for them. Back in the day when I listened to "bass bands" (primus, minutemen/firehose, etc.), I really wore Mother's Milk and BSSM out. Californication did nothing for me beyond the singles, and I'll actually argue that the last one holds up the best because it doesn't get all sock-cock slap-happy. This new song is pretty much what I expected: "By The Way" without the robotic-voiced funk verses.

I'm hoping that Rick Rubin lifted em back to BSSM form...it may be wishful thinking on my part, but really whats there to get excited about as far as music this year... YYY getting dissed, Flaming Lips dissed, Prince dissed, ...at least we won't be wondering about a new Stones disc.
UselessRocker

Yancy, (Bowie voice) YOU'RE NOT ALONE! Seriously, the only bad record the Peppers have made since like 1987 is One Hot Minute. And we can scapegoat Dave Navarro for that one. So I don't get the hatred for the Chili Peppers. But then again, I sorta get why people don't like them.

Apparently, "Dani California" is part 3 of Kiedis' "California Trilogy". Dani is the "teenage bride with the baby inside" from "Californication" and of course, she's the girl singin' songs to Kiedis beneath the marquee in "By the Way". This video/song just falls really flat for me, though. Compare this to the lead singles of the last two ("By the Way", "Scar Tissue") and it just feels like a bad sign for a record...especially a double record. Defending a mainstream rock band that I like.... a double-album being released.... I'm having really painful flashbacks to In Your Honor here.
carl
That song is not bad. The video is embarrassing, but the song on its own is no worse than the new PJ song, which is also not bad. This is par for the course with bands that are close to 20 years old. It is hard to recreate that old magic, invariably evrybody puts their best stuff out earlier than later, then you combine that with the high expectaions that nostalgia brings and you have music that everybody labels as being shit. Oh Well./

c'mon, the video is kinda funny..
I need to hear another song before I know where this double album is truly going, but I have higher hopes than the last 2. (which were ok)

i'm w/ yancy on this one. anyone expecting good/sensible lyrics outta RHCP is a fan mostly because of Under The Bridge, because besides a few of their ballads, their lyrics have always just been Kiedis rambling.

they're definitely a long time guilty pleasure of mine as well. i remember the first time i saw them was the video for Higher Ground in '89 on WTBS Friday Night Videos. went out and bought the album the next week (didn't have a record store in my town otherwise woulda been the next day). wore the shit out of that tape.

anywho, the song's chorus is pretty enjoyable, nothing new, but definitely far from crappy imo. and yeah, Frusciante is clearly the best part of RHCP, as evidenced by how shitty One Hot Minute was. i'm hoping for good things outta this record, but i'm sure w/ a double album i'll just be happy to half at least one disc full of good shit. apparently Frusc & Flea wrote a good deal of the songs too, so that's cool.

as for the video, yeah it's been done before, but i'll be damned if i didn't laugh my ass off a number of times (Flea in the opening one), the Misfits one, Flea as Ziggy Stardust, & the Nirvana Unplugged spoof>

Exactly. Rock double albums are pretty much horrible by defintion. If this not-quite-great single is a highlight, I'm worried.

Not really:

- Anything by Ayreon
- The Beatles - White Album (Unorganized as a whole, but brilliant material)
- Captain Beefheart - Trout Mask Replica
- Cream - Wheels of Fire
- Donovan - H.M.S. Donovan
- Bob Dylan - Blonde on Blonde
- The Eels - Blinking Lights and Other Revelations
- Hüsker Dü - Zen Arcade
- Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
- Nine Inch Nails - The Fragile (A lot of people don't like it, but I love it personally, so bad example)
- Olivia Tremor Control - Music From The Unrealized Film Script: Dusk At Cubist Castle
- Pink Floyd - The Wall
- The Smashing Pumpkins - Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

Off the top of my head.

All or these artists have much, much better single albums.

Mostly I was talking about modern releases (Pumpkins, Foos, etc). I should have specified. And while a lot of older double albums aren't terrible, I can't think of one I'd call great. Just about all of them would have been far better single albums.

I'm a bit odd of a Pumpkins fan. My favorite albums are Mellon Collie and Adore.

Awesome. Bring on another 6 Frusciante solo albums and I'll be ecstatic.

100 year hiatus would be better.
Mushroom Festival In Hell
Uplift Mofo Party Plan was such a great album. I find RHCP to be unlistenable these days.
stephen thomas erlewine
i will say nary a bad word about this band at the current moment. last week a festival was announced here, curated by kiedis. the line-up: bob dylan, raconteurs, gnarls barkley, spoon, the roots, black keys, black mountain, duke spirit, and more that i don't remember off the top of my head. the price for two days worth of music: 25 bucks.

so they can take a break, they can make an album. i will support them regardless (of the quality even). my loyalty has been bought.
