OK, time to take this talk out of the Laura Marling thread. I saw them again on Saturday storming it at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut and am seeing them on Friday.

'Sigh No More' is the eagerly anticipated debut album from London four piece, Mumford And Sons. Produced by Markus Dravs (Homogenic, Neon Bible, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends) Formed from the same West London scene that has given rise to the likes of Laura Marling, Jay Jay Pistolet and Noah and The Whale, yet with a much broader and wider spread appeal.

Tracklisting

1. Sigh No More
2. The Cave
3. Winter Winds
4. Roll Away Your Stone
5. White Blank Page
6. I Gave You All
7. Little Lion Man
8. Timshel
9. Thistle & Weeds
10. Awake My Soul
11. Dust Bowl Dance
12. After The Storm

Mumford & Sons are pleased to announce details of a special limited edition version of their forthcoming debut album, which is being made available exclusively to fans on their current UK tour.

‘Sigh No More’ is released through Gentlemen Of The Road/Island Records on the 5th October, but fans will be able to buy the limited-edition copy in a special ‘lyric book’ hard-cover, which will also feature exclusive photographs of the band, on their UK tour which kicked off on Saturday 12th September in Glasgow.

So should have my itchy fingers on it soon.

Yep, I'm on board with this one. Any word on a release date?

That Noah and the Whale record is lovely btw.
Liffey
I don't know Jay Jay Pistolet, but Laura Marling and Noah and The Whale are both great. Even though the video unfortunately reminds me of something kids in the cinema department at my school would do, the song sounds promising, so I'll definitely be keeping this on my radar. Hopefully the album manages to stay consistent.
Duff.
Good news.
robbie
love them. seeing them for the third time next week

I woke up to an email with a link (not that one) from a friend who picked it up at their Scala show last night. Very familar with a lot of the material from the EPs last year and live. Really like the production and the subtle use of orchestration. Two thumbs up from me!
monotony
Liffey's link says track 6 is corrupted.

EDIT: no matter, I checked atease. Here's #6: hxxp://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=18e91be58d3113f5ab1eab3e9fa335c

Just ordered the autographed CD and 7" single bundle this morning, with currency conversion and international shipping as a bonus, so I won't feel guilty about downloading this at all!

Really looking forward to listening, even with the EP overlap. Mumford & Sons' songs are in regular rotation, and they stopped me and my friend in our tracks last year performing live as openers for Laura Marling and Johnny Flynn.
monotony
Excellent album.

A lot of similarities with NatW for me, except I prefer the singer's voice to Charlie Fink's, which can occasionally grate.
robbie
really like the album. saw them on Thursday and they are definitely one of the best British bands around at the moment.
monotony
I'm repeating myself a bit ITT but I'll reiterate, this album is stupendous. Gets better with every listen. "The Cave" is the highlight for me. The single is getting a lot of requests/support on "indie" radio down here too. Would love to see them over the Australian summer.
Mitchell
They are heading to Australia in the next few months, YHIHF.
C.I.
I knew these guys had some EP's floating about that i've been meaning to get around to. downloading this album now
monotony
Bumping this again because Mumford & Sons are blowing up down under. Single has just charted at #23 on the Australian singles chart. The album is still excellent of course. Most critics seem to be liking it other than the mob over at Drowned in Sound, who inexplicably described the band as the Nickelback of folk. blink.gif
Mitchell
Album will likely be top ten or just outside tonight.
solace
downloaded this a while back but finally got a chance to listen to this... fucking amazing record.
i dug them opening for (and backing) Laura last fall, but WOW... ohmy.gif

will be surprised if this doesn't end up in my top 10 on the year
Mitchell
Yeah, it's damn good. Missed out on a top 10 by 253 records to Andy Williams. Pretty impressive, it certainly hasn't had masses of promotion other than the single being on the radio and of the class of 2008 they didn't exactly have major label wong thrown at them.
chiefstutter
I just downloaded this the other day...great album.

I haven't heard a note, but I have heard the band compared to Fleet Foxes. Thoughts ?

i've heard it too, but it's a very VERY lazy comparison.
it reminds me of a more full band and uptempo version of the Tallest Man on Earth at times more than anything.

and vocally they get a lot of comparisons to the singer of a certain really shitty huge US band, which is unfortunate (although I can hear it at times, i just choose not to make the connection laugh.gif)

The Tallest Man on Earth made my best-of list in 2008, this. This is a good thing. Thanks

i thought this would be right up my alley.

instead i really, really am apathetic about it and can't understand what all the fuss is about.

sounds so arch and anodyne at the same time.
radiocure
i like it. smile.gif

sounds like something Frightened Rabbit and Tallest Man on Earth conceived after wild sex.

i don't believe that could ever happen with those two bands.
monotony
album just hit #4 on the aus charts...

Planning on seeing these guys in late january, tickets will go on sale this friday for the laneway festival with this band, echo and the bunnymen, the xx, florence and the machine, and the black lips, amongst others...
Mitchell
They are playing a New Year's Eve show at the Forum if you fancy ringing the new year in with them for 25 sheets.

Still enjoying how well they got their live sound across for the most part on this.
Eskimo Kisses
Decided that as a general rule I find the first half of their songs boring, but the second halves really entertaining.
solace
this album certainly tapers off a bit after the first 6 songs, but i still love the hell out of it.
the dude
i'm sure its not, but i find something entirely disingenuous about their sound. to me it appears fake and forced.
stackcheese
thank you for this.
Waves Within
Despise this album. The singer sounds like such a crank.
banzai
Saw the band at Bottom Lounge and they were fantastic. I dig "Little Lion Man," but have not heard the rest of the record.
the dude
i can't believe i agree so completely with pitchfork.

saw this band a few weeks ago and thought they were just so, so ordinary.
maxexactly
shit sucks

As soon as I saw te mark and terrible opening line I knew it had been written by Stephen M. Deusner. If this where a band from the US he'd be wanking himself into a frenzy over it. He shouldn't be allowed to review anything that comes from outside of his small North American bubble.

I have no problem if he doesn't like it, just clumsly and clueless about the band like the BSP review a couple of years beforehand. Going to have to stop reading his dreadful reviews for my own sainity.

OTM on all accounts.

agreed. they have no ability to review anything rootsy in general (which is why it always seems to go to the same reviewer), and also love to act like experts on the british isles (see: ridiculous discussion of Delphic as an analogy to the Manchester real estate market).

"authenticity" is bullshit.
solace
At the very least it deserves as high as the last disappointing Avett Bros record (PF gave it a 5.8), since it's easily better than that.

what was the point of talking about the name being named after a family business really? just stick to the f'n music.
psdcfc
2.1? Are you kidding me PF?

The funniest thing about that review is how P4K accuses M&S of ripping of the sacred Fleet Foxes, as if those dudes invented folk music and harmonies.

or are somehow any more "authentic"

apparently authenticity is based on the length of your beard? unsure.gif

I'm convinced that Mitchell is now booking for Letterman. Fanfarlo and Mumford & Sons on Late Show within a couple of days? Something's up.
Mitchell
Yeah that is really odd. 53 weeks I ago I saw them both live on the same night in Reading, with mates of mine putting them on.
swede
better late than never...only recently started getting into this record, and has dominated my playlist..
fun, catchy as hell, and keeps me coming back...stellar stuff.

wonder what other gems i missed in 09...

what did you have to criticize the Avetts here for? Not sure I even get the comparison - 2 acts without a ton in common... regardless, I love the Avetts record and don't care for Mumford & Sons, so at least to my ears, it's a reasonable position to rank the Avetts higher.

the sudden surge in popularity by both acts has more in common than people will admit... almost every fan i know of Mumford is a fan of the Avetts (not always vice versa tho)

as for Avett's, they've got a pretty huge catalog and are a WAY better band, but their latest album was one of my least favorites of theirs (still has a few great songs tho).

anywho, saw Mumford & Sons again on Friday for the 6th time since first seeing them open and back Laura Marling & Johnny Flynn a couple years ago, and while the album is just decent, they're SO so much better live. their new stuff is a lot heavier and electric as well, should be interesting to see how their 2nd album fares.

the show was also the fastest sellout in First Ave history too, sold out in 4 minutes
