This is absolutely the best album from 2009 I have heard so far. It is extremely layered and dense but poppy too. A really great album through and through. Has anyone had a listen to this yet? I was a fan of the first album, but it was far too fractured and it sounded like the band was reaching beyond their grasp. Ashes Grammar isn't them pulling back but going way further.

Amazing album. Thoughts?
Liffey
I've only given it one listen so far, but I dug it. Looking forward to more listens, but Embryonic has stolen my ears for the time being.
solace
i prefer the last record by a little bit, but it is an amazing band/record no question.

5:15 Train from the last album was probably my favorite song of 2007
Liffey
After 3 thorough listens, I can confirm this to beat the shit out of pretty much anything in the "glo-fi" thread.

Sweet, fancy Moses...this is one hell of a record! Where is the love?

sometimes its all too much
The Luscious Phil
Album is both fantastic and too long.

I need about 10 minutes taken off, but I'll be damned if I can figure out where to do that.
monotony
"Shy" and "Failure" are fantastic.

All Animal Collective fanboys should listen to this. Too many tracks though.
The Incredible Circles
anyone have a link?

I'd be inclined to say there're too many tracks, too, if they weren't all but uniformly stunning. School of Seven Bells with heavy doses of MBV. I'm kind of embarrassed by how into this I am.
shame cock
i'm excited to listen to this. itunes samples are screaming my name
shame cock
school of seven bells and a sunny day in glasgow both have sort of nailed part of what made loveless so great

according to those itunes samples

I have been looking forward to the Bottom Lounge show enough to buy tickets in advance, just in case. Love the record as I do, though, I'm not sure how well this is going to play out, in a live setting. I hope for the best. We'll see.

Now that's just one hell of a fucking great run, right there.

I'm not sure that there are really any "weak" moments, on the whole record, as I hear it. Less enjoyable ones, yeah, but nothing I don't like. After listening to it quite a bit, for a few weeks, I have come to enjoy how it all bleeds together. Something always sneaks up and surprises me, when I give it another listen. Awesome. Very curious about the live show, because I could see this sounding pretty tame. Hoping for the best.
idolatry
Also, the last 4ish minutes of "Close Chorus" are more than likely the greatest music since...well, the last great song I listened to. Either way, brilliant. Especially at punishing volume. Once they come out of that loping bassline and into that open middle 8-type passage, the song just blasts off into space and never looks back.

Going to be at the Bottom Lounge show, tomorrow, and am still very curious as to just how it'll sound and be. Love the record as I do, my expectations for the show are relatively low, as these nu-gaze shows often leave me pretty underwhelmed. We'll see. As long as they play "Hybrid Moments," I'll be happy as a pig in shit.

Record owns, and I'm now eagerly anticipating that EP...but this band was one of the worst, most dumbfoundingly lost live acts I've ever seen. Just dreadful. I will be skipping the Schubas gig.

So not worth checking out in Toronto?

I mean, maybe it was an aberration...? They were fucking SHIT, though, man. Most of the show was just a series of pre-programmed backing tracks with weak vocals and random instrumentation delivered (poorly) on top. Maybe they've improved by leaps and bounds, since then, but like I said...I'm gladly skipping the next Chicago show. No reservations whatsoever. People were leaving in droves. Probably only like 25 to 35 people left, by the time it was all over and done. And most of them were just chatting, in the back.

Still loving Ashes Grammar. My favourite tracks change with every listen; right now I think it's Ashes Maths and Starting At A Disadvantage. It's such a warm, beatific pleasure throughout though.

The 3 new tracks on that EP are superb as well; So Bloody, So Tight is just demented.

Hi Everyone,

Hope you are having a lovely summer (or winter for any other antipodeans out there). Wanted to let you all know that we will be releasing a new full length record this Fall called, Autumn, Again. The cover art actually has lots of things written on and you might even want to call it Autumn, Again: Pop Songs 2010, or maybe even Sigh? Whatever you call it, we will be giving it away completely free as a digital download from our website from October 19 until Autumn ends. We've also pressed the record on to 500 maroon vinyl 12"s which will be for sale from October 19.

The songs that make up Autumn were all written for our album from last year, Ashes Grammar. We wrote (and started to record) so many songs for that album, and while we were keen to move on to whatever comes next, these songs just wouldn't let go. "Fall in Love" and "Drink drank drunk" were actually the first two songs we started recording during those sessions (and "Drink drank drunk" goes back to a VERY early demo from 2004). These songs are also interesting in that all of the vocals and a bit of the music for them was recorded while we were on tour in Europe this Spring. In hotel rooms or folks' apartments...the vocals for "Fall in Love" were actually recorded in this crazy 18th century manor house/mansion in Germany that now serves as a community art/performance center.

During the past year we played something like 150 shows, put out a LP, and an EP and really, just had an incredible year. Autumn, Again is our big "thank you" to our fans and everyone who helped make our year so incredible. It also closes the book on a chapter for us. We're not sure what comes next, but we really want to make something totally and completely different. Easier written than done, but we'll see....

Anyway, check out the artwork and download "Drink drank drunk" from pitchfork: http://pitchfork.com/news/39824-a-sunny-da...free-digitally/
And you can hear somewhat rougher version of "Sigh, Inhibitionist" on our tour blog: http://sittingcontest.tumblr.com/post/452627311

Track list below! Thanks everybody!

xoxo
asdig

2. Fall in love
3. Petition to refrain from repetition
4. Sigh, inhibitionist (Come all day with me)
5. Moments on the lawn

8. How does somebody say when they like you?

10. This assclown eats ambien OR Nobody likes you (No Art)
11. 100/0 (Snowdays forever)

Good news!!!

Still a big fan of Ashes Grammar.

I would like to take a moment to look back on this album with everyone. This is truly a masterwork and it's a bit of a shame that it is almost destined to be forgotten at this point.

I don't have anything constructive to add to the conversation, I've just gone back and listened through again and the album has retained every ounce of its spellbinding wonder two years later.

Yeah, I still listen to this and parts of Scribble Mural Comic Journal with regularity. But I also still remember A Sunny Day in Glasgow as one of the most excruciatingly awful live bands I've ever seen. Unspeakable horrors were witnessed, that night, as I guess I've already over-explained.

This band should record a cover LP of Static Age.

I actually avoided seeing this band live based mostly on your experience and I'm quite happy about it. I haven't soiled my love of their albums by seeing the live experience.
