Hi there. I am trying to track down a song from the baseball movie Sugar.
The final scene has a Spanish version of Cohen's "Hallelujah."

Can't find it anywhere. Google searches only come up with that it might be sung by a Chilean singer named Gebe (sp).
Does anyone have any further information? Gebe (sp) yields no results. Any other good foreign language versions of this song out there?

Also, please feel free to use this thread to debate the best version of "Hallelujah": Cohen's, Buckley's, Cale's, Chilean singer Gebe's . I'm sure there's been a poll before, or use it to talk about the amazing film "Sugar."

Thanks there,
RH

No clue how to get ahold of, but the idea is good. I thought the song, and especially its use in films was dead until the end of Sugar, which seemed to give the song a whole new life. Turns out it was just dead in English, so we need to start translating it. I'm sure it sounds incredible in German... right?

yeah, there's a pretty good uproar on last.fm posts about how Shrek and The OC or One Tree Hill or whatever has tarnished the songs image.

example:

HampusForever wrote:
I care if the song is on the fucking O.C, it totally sours it's beauty. When somebody says "so sad... i must always think to Marissa's death at the O.C. sad.gif(( "... Yeah that sours it for me, you can say whatever you want

also, there is an article criticizing Sugar for pulling out all the indie cliches -

From Reverse Shot:

But the filmmakers also succumb to some melodramatic Indiewood impulses, as well. For every sincere and tender scene, such as Sugar weeping into his American caretaker’s waist, the filmmakers toss in a cloying, manipulative or patronizing moment: a Zach Braff¬–esque shoutout to TV on the Radio from one of Sugar’s U.S.-born teammates, absurdly surprised that our hero isn’t familiar with the band; several montages that lazily pull us through the baseball season; and a shot of Sugar wistfully staring out the window of a bus at the American landscape rolling by—a Sundance standby. Fleck and Boden even use Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” on the soundtrack—albeit a Spanish-language cover.

It's Gepe. I got the info from writer/director Ryan Fleck after a Q&A. Unfortunately I didn't ask him what album, assuming I'd just find it on iTunes or Amazon. I found 3 albums on iTunes Gepe is on - but no Hallelujah, nothing on Amazon either.

Quick searches of Google and Shareminer and Elbo.ws turned up nothing, sorry.

Thanks, no plays of "Hallelujah" on his last.fm charts either. This is going to be difficult.

If you have the movie handy, maybe just try grabbing Audacity and recording it directly from the film? (Play film in quicktime player at section with song, then hit record in audacity, hit stop when song finishes) This is the best idea I've got for you, and if I had the film still instead of sending it back to netflix, I'd do it myself, lol. No idea if there is other audio/noise going on in the scenes where the song is playing though... that'd ruin the plan.

Already sent it back to Netflix as well. Good trick, I don't think they play the full track though.
