if you like music such as Annuals, Fleet Foxes, Grizzly Bear, Anathallo (among others) you should certainly check these guys out. Gorilla Manor doesn't have a bad song on it. Every track has either a great melody, vocal harmonies, energy, or something else about it to enjoy.

I've been digging "Airplanes" for about 6 months now and look forward to hearing this one. I'll be seeing them with Edward Sharpe at Lincoln Hall Thanksgiving weekend. Has it leaked yet?

yea its out there

I'm listening to this album everyday now. It just keeps getting better.

The entire thing is really good. Even though many of the songs I had heard previously, hearing them within this collection of songs, they seem to be given new life.

World News = great vocal harmony
Sun Hands = new arrangement totally works
Cards and Quarters = Dreamy mood
Wide Eyes = perfect opening track
Who Knows Who Cares = the buildup in this song rules
Warning Sign = they made this their own song in a lot of ways. The bass-line I cannot get out of my head. So funky.

Yeah I can follow the comparison.

I'm kind of digging the stuff on myspace. Their album "Never Was There a Town" I'm not having much luck finding anywhere. Any help?
chiefstutter
Great song. I'll have to check this out.

Not sure why this hasn't got more responses. A fair share of the Fleet Foxes and Arcade Fire fans would enjoy this. Harmonised indie from California, where is SOMB?

I really like this album alot. This is one more people should check out if they haven't already.

got a copy from recordstore over here in the uk, tis very easy on the ears this, would be great in summer

yeah..I suppose the fact it hasn't dropped in the States may be part of the reason. They are getting a lot of discussion on the blogs. Opening for Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros should help as well.

I finally received my copy in the mail on Saturday. The artwork is very well done. It also included a DVD with 6 acoustic songs.

Also people who enjoy this, may want to hear their music when they were known as "Cavil at Rest" "Orion Way" from 2007 is pretty much as-good as Gorilla Manor. Plus it includes a slightly different version of "Sun Hands."

anybody go friday night? local natives stole the show.

I'm seeing them in a few hours. Pretty much every blog that mentions a live review echoes your statement tennisclay. I wouldn't be surprised if the same happens this evening in Minneapolis.

another excellent show tonight in Minneapolis

Saw them this evening, November 29th, 2009.

Camera Talk
World News
Warning Sign
Airplanes
Wide Eyes
Shapeshifter
Who Knows, Who Cares
Sun Hands +jam

another energetic, uplifting live performance from the-next-big-thing (in Indie) err..not next to me of course considering I've loved them for nearly 3 years to the day/week as it was December'06 or January'07, I forget, when I was 1st introduced to the band, then known as Cavil at Rest.

Sun Hands is such a winner live. It absolutely kills every-time. Honest-to-god, they might be good to open with that track every show. I told Matt, their drummer, if they ever release a live album/dvd that has got to be on it.

And maybe most satisfying about this show, I am pretty certain, I was right. A lot of people had never heard them before and now dig them. Hopefully memories won't be short and come February, when they mentioned Gorilla Manor should drop in the US, those folks will remember and hound 89.3 to play them. And to be honest, they could play any number of songs off GM. If I picked one, I might suggest "World News"..the vocal-harmonies are just such a great representation about what they are about, a ton more people can and will enjoy them just for the vocal-harmonies on that track.

Interesting in talking with the band after the show and showing them my copy of "Gorilla Manor" they-had-not-seen-it yet in fact, lol. I felt so privileged yet embarrassed in a way. The special pre-order from Rough Trade

edit: for what it actually is worth, Gorilla Manor is their "album-of-the-month" lol. Very cool!

well if it means anything to you, I haven't been able to get the DVD to play anyway. I haven't tried it on every dvd player I own, but I suspect it's PAL encoded or something.

i'll send you my address shall i? wink.gif

anybody talk to them and see when they're playing the us next. they have europe dates till feburary or march.
Soundscape
there's a video from that NME tour they did basically saying they'll be on tour pretty much all year next year supporting this debut album of theirs. Chances are they did well enough over in the UK on that tour, that many venues wanted to book them again.

I probably doesn't hurt they're represented by Radiohead's agent I imagine.

Also a note, the US Edition of Gorilla Manor is going to be released on "French Kiss" February 16th

Soundscape,

Are you putting this on your eoy list or are you considering it a 2010 release.
tennisclay
i just put it on my 2009 list. its out now somewhere. it will probably end up like bon iver. few people vote this year and next year people go ape shit over it.
Liffey
I don't think this will be making my list either way, but I'm still enjoying this quite a bit. Should be pretty popular I would think.

2009, definitely. Most of it was recorded, mixed and mastered in 2008 anyway.

went back to this again recently. looking forward to seeing them again.

I've been hearing about this on the local radio station and from a friend for awhile, so I finally caved and checked this out.

I like it a lot. Production-wise, the mix sounds wonderful on my new Klipsch speakers, but I still need to spend some time with it.
MuteSuperstar
Can't get enough of Wide Eyes. Great song, very wintry.
tennisclay
how big will these guys get? are they the next arcade fire/fleet foxes?
Soundscape
who knows, but it may help that they do the same rep as Radiohead.
Soundscape
well pukefork gives it an 8.4/10

QUOTE
Gorilla Manor, the debut album from L.A.'s Local Natives, features rustic and yearning vocals, three-part harmonies, clattering percussion, wiggly guitar leads, euphoric chanting, and a Talking Heads cover. In short, the Silver Lake quintet have followed indie rock's major players in recent years-- they knew how to dress for success in 2010. Great for them-- now, what's in it for you? Plenty as it turns out.

Local Natives have already gained a foothold in parts of Europe-- their album has received attention in the UK and they graced the cover of Scandinavia's Sonic magazine late last year-- at home in L.A., and online. With good reason too: Advance singles "Airplanes" and "Sun Hands" recalled elements of Dodos or the Fleet Foxes. The best comparison perhaps is that they're sort of a West Coast Grizzly Bear-- right down to naming an album after the location in which it was recorded. Yet whereas Grizzly Bear's Yellow House is a cozy, isolated New England seaside shack, Local Natives' Gorilla Manor is a squalid Orange County party pad.

At first listen that seems off-- the chops and compositional sense here are the most immediately impressive part of the album. But dig deeper and you realize Local Natives never lose sight of the pleasures of being a youthful rock band-- right down to themes of wanderlust and discovery. "Oh, to see it with my own eyes," goes to the central lyrics to album opener "Wide Eyes". This inquisitiveness and quest for self-knowledge may as well be the record's life-affirming and open-armed thesis statement.

Indeed, this optimism relishes experience and finds opportunity where others may see obstacles: Garage rocker "Camera Talk" initially reads like a harried travelogue ("We're running through the aisles/ Of the churches still in style"), but the band still comes off like they're living the dream-- " And even though I can't be sure/ Memory tells me that these times are worth working for." "Airplanes" is a tribute to one of the bandmember's pilot grandfather, and while the counterpoints of strings and piano are buoyant enough it's the evocative images (chopsticks from his time spent in Japan, a well-thumbed encyclopedia) that indicate his life was well-lived.

But even where the lyrics get more obtuse (a Skype exchange with an ex is likened to a "Cubism Dream"), there's almost always a strong pulse running through the busy, precise compositions: "Shape Shifter", for example, is about impressionistic themes of self-reckoning but the sentiment is also reflected in the song's arrangement. At certain points, it's Gorilla Manor's sludgiest track; at others, it's the most quicksilver and agile. The strings and harmonies of the glacial "Cards & Quarters" and "Who Knows, Who Cares?" are gorgeous, but drum rolls and washes of cymbal hint at imminent collapse. Only closer "Sticky Thread" offers calm.

So while the record's second half dials back the tempo, stuck in its midsection is a cover of the Talking Heads, hardly a band that would be considered "loose." "Warning Sign" isn't the most canonical of their songs, but taking it on is an audacious decision for a band that would be wise to let the comparisons come to them first. They retain the elasticity of the bassline and the general verse-chorus structure, but that's about it: David Byrne's pinprick vocals are treated with melodic contour and supple harmonies, the breakdown veers from nervous to joyfully emphatic, and the guitars soften around the edges. Whether it's "better" than the original is besides the point-- at least for four minutes, Local Natives take ownership of it, fully integrating what might have been an incompatible hard left turn into the record's seamless whole. True, we tend to bow at novelty and innovation, but Gorilla Manor proves to be a refreshing reminder of the pleasures of synthesis.

— Ian Cohen, February 15, 2010

I'm not sure if that's good or bad for the band, given some history I've found when they praise something, many bloggers feel the opposite.

I just hope this will finally get some attention of the local media in Minneapolis who failed to even mention their performance opening for Edward Sharpe back in November. I and others found that to be rather surprisingly if not insulting.
warehouse
regardless of what p4k said, this is a great album. i can't see it being bad for the band that they get a good rating from a pretty credible site that dissects the shit out of music, good or bad.

I can't disagree.

Perhaps DeRo and Kot will eventually chime-in about them and more discussion will happen here. I get 5-10 new emails/day via a google-blog-subscription. Really since last Fall.

perhaps part of the reason it's not really being discussed is that it's solid without being spectacularly great or spectacularly awful. it just sits in that nice middle ground of 'solid'.

I'm really enjoying this. Solid effort, some really great tunes. The only thing that bothers me is that the first track, "Wide Eyes," is the best song on the album. Only a minor complaint, because there's some great stuff here.

went for it more, in extended rock out jams, vocals were still spot on.
impressed with the drummer too, kept it all together well
