it's officially been announced on the website now anyway

surprised to see Pearl Jam back playing Festivals after they vowed not to after the Roskilde thing. maybe just needed some time to get over it i guess.
they were STRONGLY rumored the last month or so, so not too too surprised i guess.

I am in Reading (at University) and I haven't wanted to go since 2000 based on the line ups (then I was too young anyway and no-one liked that kind of music then)
The other stage looks better than the main stage. The audience is always too young anyway I think average age is about 17!

I still don't understand why Pearl Jam are headliners for a UK festival in 2006.
because just because you don't give a shit about them, plenty of people in the UK do. out of about a dozen friends i have in the UK, 3 of them are HUGE PJ fans.
what's the difference between them playing Reading in '06 and Audioslave playing it? that's like me asking how in the hell Oasis can still somehow play Arenas over here in the US.
this was a huge score for Leeds & Reading to be honest, their first festivals in 6 years since the Roskilde incident.
they're also playing on Jools Holland in May.

It's not that I don't give a shit, I don't know anyone that gives a shit. I don't think i've ever heard someone say the words Pearl Jam out loud in a conversation.
The difference with Audioslave was that was a big deal at the time for people. If Oasis headlined Coachella I would be scratching my head too.
solace
Apr 4 2006, 10:29 AM
that's cuz you hang out w/ UK rock snobs ;P
well, i'd say the fact that they can still sell out arenas in the UK on their own tells you all you need to know.
like i said, i'm not a fan of Oasis whatsoever, never have, never will be, nor are any of my friends, but i realize there are still a lot of fans in the US somehow, so there is definitely demand there.

I can't believe that on a bill with 5 acts that have had a #1 album in the past 2 years Pearl Jam are headlining the rock night compared to previous acts like Iron Maiden, Foo Fighters, Marilyn Manson, System of a Down, Green Day and The Offspring who have more of a varied fanbase then Pearl Jam who I'm sure have a large following in the UK but not a universal appeal.
solace
Apr 4 2006, 10:52 AM
wait... The Offspring are still around?
honestly, go over on the Pearl Jam forum (which is quite insanely huge members-wise) and see how many people bought tickets JUST to see Pearl Jam at Reading, it's pretty surprising. apparently tickets sold out yesterday already?
i'd say it's worse that the Foos & Manson have had #1 albums in the past 2 years over there than it is Pearl Jam headlining Reading/Leeds

I was referring to Franz, Arctic Monkeys, Feeder, Muse and The Streets then.
solace
Apr 4 2006, 10:57 AM
ah, was not obvious from your post. well then, i'll change my comment to include Feeder (had a few decent songs many years ago but blah)
also, Pearl Jam's name sticks out quite a bit on that 3rd list. MCR are shite and Placebo aren't exactly all that great either.
whether you'll agree or not, Pearl Jam on that bill is like Led Zeppelin being on a bill w/ a bunch of fairly big 80's bands in 1983 (yeah i know Bonham died in '80 just pretend).

I used to love PJ. They were my favourite band. But that was like 14 years ago . I also know no one who likes them or even mentions them anymore. Yes they were a big band but really if you want to put a hasbeen band on that is still selling surely the RHCP would be the pick?

RHCP were exactly the band I was thinking of to fit the bill and haven't played there recently.

last UK PJ tour in 2000 they sold out 2 nights at Wembley, 1 at Manchester Evening News, 1 at Cardiff Arena, 1 at SECC & 1 at the Point
i know they're definitely not as big as Maiden in the UK, not many bands are (they're one of the biggest bands in all of Europe from what i noticed on my travels last summer)
Mitchell
Apr 4 2006, 04:51 PM
Nowhere near as big Foo Fighters. Like I said earlier PJ can sell out arena's all over the country but they aren't attracting new fans at all. my bet is that most people who bought a ticket to Reading/Leeds for the whole festival (as opposed to buying a ticket as they have to see one band) are really familiar with them. These festivals attract a very young crowd. The only difference this year is the lack of Glastonbury and to be honest the IoW and V Festivals have better line ups than this.
Riot Act barely made the top 40 here.
solace
Apr 4 2006, 04:57 PM
that's cuz Riot Act was crap

we'll see, i'll be interested to see how well they do this time around w/ a bit stronger record and the fact that they're willing to do promotional stuff for once.

I wouldn't consider going to Leeds or Reading ever again now that I've discovered the joys of festivals abroad.
Rain and riots in Leeds or sunshine, calm and ultimately better lineups in continental Europe. I've been to Lowlands in the Netherlands in the past but this year its Primavera at Barcelona which is looking to better than the ATP and Pitchfork festivals combined.

Primavera is tempting me more and more. Barcelona is a bit improvement to hanging around here that's for sure.
