I don't think it exists. They did a poor job documenting their shows after Pompeii.

so this band didn't get proper good until Barret left (was kicked out)

Thing is, music is not the circus.

a concert infront of 20,000 should be more then just some people on stage competently playing there songs. especially considering how fucking expensive tickets are now.

Some bands are more open to visuals than others obviously.

I mean, the day Springsteen has a visual component to his show is the day his reputation as a live performer is rendered irrelevant.

However, going to a Roger Waters (or Floyd show for that matter) without the visuals would leave with the feeling that something was lacking, I'd assume. It'd be like going to a Britney Spears show without the lip-syncing, or the costume changes, or the skanks.
Angrimorfee
What a shitty writeup, up there before the tweets. huh.gif

Last night, I was moved to tears numerous times. The effort to bring more universal thoughts and emotions and political ramifications within Waters' sometimes so-insular lyrics through the fantastic video imagery was astonishing.

I'd say this is now my #1 Concert experience of all time, edging out the Residents Cube E.

Did he? I noticed a few weird things....either they missed the cue to play, or weren't turned up, at the start of the Spanish guitar part in Is There Anybody Out There. And a bizarrely loud bass bit in Comfortably Numb--you can hear it on the Youtube video, and it made my gf and I look at each other and laugh during the show. At any rate, while I wasn't as blown away by the show as some--there were a few other problems I had with it, which were probably all the more noticeable given that my seats were pretty close--the show is settling more favorably in hindsight, and I'm really glad I went. I'm hoping he puts out a DVD of it--maybe coupled with footage of the original show, or with his DSotM show. That live Wall album is in rotation these days.
Angrimorfee
Waters has always expressed misgivings about the live Wall footage they have. Maybe he will release it, having been softened these past few years.

Yeah, the recently uncovered footage seems to maybe be passable, from what I've read about it. I was stunned when he announced he was going to show footage from the 1980 show....then showed a hyper-contrast close-up only shot of him playing. Wasn't quite what I was hoping for, but still cool.

Is anyone else (Montana?) psyched for the upcoming Orb album featuring David Gilmour? I know little of the Orb, but what I've heard from this so far sounds pretty awesome.

I'm rocking the Orb+Gilmour stream now. Nice stuff. Makes me want to go on a long, night drive.

I'm really debating the Barrett disc. As it is now, I have everything he did in the context of Pink Floyd, and nothing he did solo--and even the PF stuff is all from the 1992-1993 remastered discs, so I'm not convinced another remaster is needed. So if I'm interested in his solo stuff, it would seem to make more sense to just go for the 2-3 discs he did. But the new album cover is pretty cool.

Today marks the date that Dark Side fell from the Billboard charts after 741 weeks:

http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Feat...ight-1008-2010/

But the legacy of the album goes beyond time and money to, well… “Time” and “Money” (as well as “Breathe,” “Brain Damage,” “Eclipse,” etc.). Pink Floyd’s progressive rock masterpiece is often cited as one of the top albums of all time, frequently making top 100 lists, and is still influencing modern bands, including Radiohead (whose experimental 1997 album OK Computer was called a Dark Side for the ’90s) and The Flaming Lips (who re-recorded the album as a tribute in 2009).

The Dark Side of the Moon might be off the Top 200 chart, but it certainly lives on.

LOL. Yeah, I ordered the deluxe version--I'm curious to hear the fancy "surround" mix, for just $3 more. It meanders a bit throughout parts, but I'm excited to revisit the album in earnest once I get it.

Pink Floyd may get back together for charity
By Ian Youngs Entertainment reporter, BBC News

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason has said the legendary rock band may get back together to play concerts for charity.

The group, who have sold 200 million albums, last performed at the Live 8 concert in London in 2005.

"I think all of us would like the idea of repeating the Live 8 concept," Mason said.

He said the group could do "something that's not necessarily for us, but do something for the right reasons and enjoy doing it."

"That's what I'd like, and I think the others might well see eye to eye."

His bandmates Roger Waters and David Gilmour famously fell out in the 1980s but charity recently brought the pair back together for the first time since Live 8.

They performed three Pink Floyd classics for the Hoping Foundation, which helps Palestinian children, in Oxfordshire in July.

After the show, Waters wrote that the performance was "great. End of story. Or possibly beginning."

Gilmour will also be a surprise guest during one date on Waters' forthcoming tour, where Waters is playing the band's album The Wall in full.

Speaking at the In The City music conference in Manchester, Mason said Live 8 could provide a "template for something we would do again".

"I think it would be a very nice way for a band to gently move towards retirement, by doing shows absolutely for charity rather than for more income," he said.

He told BBC News any such shows would be likely to raise money for a charitable foundation that distributed it to a variety of good causes.

"In a way the best thing would be to do a number of shows and have some sort of foundation," he said.

"We all individually have pet projects and what we did at Earls Court [in 1994] was we pooled the money and each of us decided which particular things they would like some of the money to go towards, which was brilliant. That's the way to do it."

In May, Waters said: "A one off thing, for some kind of charity event, I could see that happening again. I guess three [original members] is enough. I would be up for it, for sure."

The band's keyboardist Richard Wright died in 2008.

Mason appeared at In The City in his capacity as co-chairman of the Featured Artists' Coalition, a body that was set up two years ago to fight for musicians' rights.
Angrimorfee
I would have problems with them going around a la "The Who" nowadays. Rog is getting to be a little softer in his convictions, but hopefully not too soft.
Johnny Feathers
Interesting. I'm not sure it's really necessary now that Wright's gone....and I think Mason's always been for getting back together. It's the other two that have held out at different times.
Montana
Actually Waters/Mason/Gilmour is a more legitimate lineup than Gilmour/Mason/Wright. Rick was great, but he really hit a wall after WYWH in terms of studio ability IMHO.

Anyway, rare footage has been released of Pink Floyd performing at Song Days Festival in 1969:

would be awesome if the remaining three got together and just became a power trio band like Rush. don't even record/tour as Pink Floyd. start a new legacy and just get together for the sake of creating good music that would blow today's crap out of the water.

Waters finally addresses the Sex Pistols thing:

At the height of their stadium-size progressive-rock success in the '70s, Pink Floyd were held in contempt by emerging punk rebels. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols wore a Pink Floyd shirt that blotted out the members' eyes and had "I hate" above the band name.

"I didn't care," says Waters. "The Sex Pistols always seemed supremely irrelevant to me. I'll tell you why. It was never really about anything. It was just a marketing exercise. . . . Maybe I'm being unfair. But it never really interested me, musically, philosophically, politically, or in any way."

QUOTE (Lydon interview)
The former Sex Pistols singer - who famously wore a T-shirt emblazoned with 'I Hate Pink Floyd' in his 70s punk heyday - said the move was a joke, and that he once came very close to performing some of the psychedelic album with original band member David Gilmour in Los Angeles.

i can understand the desire but fuck it, just stay apart at this point. nothing will ever touch the originals, whether it's the beatles, led zep, or whoever. history will be kinder to those who don't sully their perfection. if only willie mays hand't played for the mets. (if nothing else, my sense of control and perfectionism would remain intact, meaning nothing for the world at large, but meaning everything for my need for putting things in their relative boxes, keeping them there, and thus bringing order to a world gone mad).

You are right; most oldies acts can never return the glory. But the members of Pink Floyd are different. They still trounce acts 20, 30 and 40 years younger. Waters had a vision of them all aging like bluesmen rather than prancing rock stars, the music style being the main facilitator of this longevity.

In the studio? That's a different story. I don't think anyone over the age of 50 writes great music. Maybe one of the greats can eek out a great track here and there, but that's about it.

waters' vision aside, i'm going to be cold and brutal and sadistic and against my own wants and say keep the past in the past. i've seen plenty of "oldie" acts and really enjoyed them, i.e., page/plant, the who, waters, csny, but there's something beautiful about paul, george and ringo never going on tour. i'm going to willfully forget free as a bird and it's jeff lynne production here. dilution is death. mission statement (that i won't personally adhere to but nevertheless demand of others).

and, side/related note, b/c i don't think i've contributed in this thread yet, pink floyd is rad. can't be said enough just how top-10 dark side is.

Rare tape of 1967 Pink Floyd concert found:

The recordings reportedly include the show's soundcheck and the 50-minute concert, and were recorded professionally. Though several bootlegs from the era exist, it is thought to be the only complete recording of a 1967 concert by Floyd.

there is speculation representatives from EMI will be in attendance to hear the concert's sound quality.

I finally picked up the Introduction to Syd Barrett disc, and am surprisingly pleased. I'd had all the Pink Floyd stuff already, but the new mixes are interesting, particularly Matilda Mother. The rest of the solo stuff is pretty great, even with the occasional "WTF?" moments throughout. I'm currently listening to Rhamadan and am reminded very much of Interstellar Overdrive. This will be fun to dig more into.

Major Pink Floyd release campaign, Why Pink Floyd ... ?, to include unreleased music from the archives, collectors' box sets and complete studio recordings remastered.

LONDON, May 10, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Pink Floyd and EMI Music, whose association dates from 1967, announce a comprehensive release schedule, to be launched on September 26, 2011, encompassing CDs, DVDs, Blu-ray discs, SACD, an array of digital formats, viral marketing, iPhone Apps and a brand-new single-album 'Best Of' collection.

The legendary band, who are still one of the most successful and iconic artists of all time, recently signed an agreement with EMI which has allowed the development of a multi-format programme of packages, many containing archive material that has been collated during an extensive process between EMI and Pink Floyd for a range of media formats.

The releases, under the banner Why Pink Floyd ... ?, are designed to appeal to a wide cross section of their fans, with music to excite first time listeners, while super-deluxe box sets will cater to dedicated fans, allowing them to immerse themselves in multi-disc sets, containing alternate takes, unreleased tracks, restored live concert screen films and a live recording of the legendary The Dark Side Of The Moon performance at Wembley in 1974.

A series of different listening experiences have been specially created for this release: in addition to remastered CD's called 'Discovery' and the 'Immersion' CD / DVD / Blu-ray / memorabilia box sets will be a series of 'Experience' Editions – coupling one classic album with a further disc of related content from that album to offer a deeper listening experience.

Roger Faxon, CEO of EMI Group, said: "This is a unique collaboration between EMI and one of the most creative and influential bands in history. We have worked together for more than a year on this programme which incorporates all the elements that have made Pink Floyd one of the most inspiring forces in modern music. Why Pink Floyd? Because their music is without equal and these exciting new releases will allow music fans to rediscover their incredible legacy and demonstrate that an appreciation for artistic quality never goes out of fashion."

Storm Thorgerson, the band's longtime Art Director, has overseen the visual design, including new booklets for all the CD's, new artwork for the box sets and menus for the DVD content. Respected photographer Jill Furmanovsky, has edited books of original unseen photographs. Pink Floyd collaborators James Guthrie (in the US) and Andy Jackson (in the UK) have been in charge of digital remastering to the highest audio and audiovisual standards.

Pink Floyd film archivist Lana Topham has supervised the painstaking restoration of many historic films from Pink Floyd's classic era, included in the 'Immersion' box sets for 'The Dark Side Of The Moon' and 'Wish You Were Here.'

First to be available on 26 September 2011 will be:

Expanded deluxe and special edition versions of Pink Floyd masterwork The Dark Side Of The Moon, in a 6-disc 'Immersion' box set and 'Experience' 2-disc versions, as well as a collectors' vinyl LP and various digital formats. Plus 14 studio albums, digitally remastered will be available separately or as a box set.

Other initiatives will include a digital marketing plan utilising user-generated content to allow fans to make their own creative contributions to the band's music, plus iPhone Apps which will give a unique insight into Pink Floyd's recorded legacy.

On 7 November 2011, Phase 2 of the releases will include:

Wish You Were Here 'Immersion' 5-disc and 'Experience' 2-disc editions, both of which will include bonus material from the band's 1974 Wembley dates, including a 20-minute tour de force live rendition of 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond', as well as a unique recording of 'Wish You Were Here' featuring the legendary jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli. A collectors' vinyl LP will also be available, as will various digital formats.

Released simultaneously will be A Foot In The Door - The Best Of Pink Floyd, a collection of their most well known songs, contained on one album for the first time.

The long-awaited 5.1 version of 'Wish You Were Here,' mixed by James Guthrie, will also be released in parallel via independent label Acoustic Sounds.

The Wall, which has sold 25-million double sets and has become a cultural and political touchstone over the last three decades, will be afforded the same exhaustive treatment on February 27, 2012, with deluxe packages including a 7-disc 'Immersion' set and a 3-disc 'Experience' edition. A collectors' vinyl LP will also be available, as will various digital formats.

Pink Floyd's official website, www.pinkfloyd.com, will be given a substantial relaunch from today. Pink Floyd's Facebook page now has over 11 million followers.
