I am not a fan of Stern or Roth, so I really couldn't care less. But I just wanted to point out how much DLR looks like a cross between a strung out Robert Palmer and David Hyde Pierce in this photo:

Roth Struggles After Replacing Stern

NEW YORK - David Lee Roth says he won't jump from his gig as a morning radio host. Roth, who replaced shock jock Howard Stern on seven stations in January, has struggled in making the move from rock star to radio host. But during his Friday show, the former Van Halen frontman vowed to stick with it — although he acknowledged that problems continue.

"I'm going to give it a try," Roth told his audience. "I've invested too much in this show not to."

Roth's show underwent drastic changes last week, with the removal of his three on-air sidekicks and the ditching of background music. According to Roth, he received four letters in five days from CBS Radio officials demanding "extensive changes" in his four-hour show.

The rocker complained that CBS executives had failed to offer him enough support when the show first made its debut.

"I didn't know what I was doing," Roth said. "I asked for rehearsal, and they didn't give it to me."

Failure to comply meant "termination or disciplinary action," said Roth, whose show airs in New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Dallas and West Palm Beach, Fla.

Sadly,

I would have rather had Roth over Rover. I can't believe how bad radio is after Stern left.

Get Sirius there, buddy. It's well worth it.

They're being real fucking assholes to Roth. They're even giving Rover a big boost with bus and billboard ads and Roth just got fucked over in his markets. They fired his crew and have him running through hoops. He says he ain't leaving...this is all CBS' ploy to not pay him his on his contract.

it's been said before, you don't want to be the guy that follows Stern

You want to be the guy that follows the guy that followed Stern. There will be much lower expectations for that person and that person won't be under the same microscope and they'll have a better chance for success because the brass @ Infinity won't be picking apart their shows

too bad because Roth is hilarious.

Just listen to how he conjures up answers in his head when he is asked questions. He always has to frame an answer in a way no one has ever done so before, and usually he is crazy smart in his logic, notwithstanding verbose.

Fairly impossible if you're not in one of his markets. Unless you're downloading shit from somewhere, in which case you're an internet-nerd. laugh.gif

NEW YORK - No surprise:
David Lee Roth's run as morning radio host is about done. Big surprise: It appears raunchy satellite radio stars Opie and Anthony will replace him on seven CBS Radio stations.

A deal was in the works to dump the ex-Van Halen singer's ratings-deprived program with shock jocks Greg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, according to two people with knowledge of the deal. They spoke Thursday on condition of anonymity pending an official announcement of the agreement next week.

Opie and Anthony were banished from terrestrial radio in 2002 — oddly enough by their new boss, CBS Radio — after airing a live account of listeners having sex in New York's St. Patrick's Cathedral. CBS Radio was then known as Infinity Broadcasting.

Opie and Anthony resurfaced on XM in October 2004. The satellite radio provider has more than 6.5 million subscribers, with the Opie and Anthony show one of the most popular programs on its 170 channels.

XM will now syndicate the program to the stations in New York and six other markets, with three hours of the program airing on the CBS Radio stations, the people familiar with the deal said. XM will simultaneously broadcast that portion of the show, along with another two hours of exclusive O&A, they said.

A spokeswoman at CBS Radio declined to comment on the report, as did a spokesman for XM.

Roth's radio career began in January, when he replaced Howard Stern on the CBS stations. But reviews were poor and Roth fought with management over the show's format, putting the show on the skids less than four months into its run.

Roth, during one angry on-air rant, predicted the show could be yanked before May.

The move marks a shift in the dynamic between terrestrial and satellite radio. In the past, satellite raided terrestrial radio for big-name hosts such as Opie and Anthony or Stern. Now, the seven FM stations will rely on a syndicated satellite program.

In addition to the Free-FM station in New York, Opie and Anthony will reportedly air on WBCN-FM in Boston, WYSP-FM in Philadelphia, WRKZ-FM in Pittsburgh, WNCX-FM in Cleveland, WPBZ-FM in West Palm Beach, Fla., and KLLI-FM in Dallas.

Stern, who engaged in a lengthy on-air feud with Opie and Anthony, is in his first year of broadcasting for Sirius Satellite Radio. O&A will now fill in his old time slot.

I'm gonna say this and people will think it's just because I am hooked up with SIRIUS, but the idea that XM brokered this deal to put those two asswipes on free radio when they had those two guys as exclusive content simply reaks of desperation. XM will be surpassed by SIRIUS by this time next year and Opie and Anthony will be out of work in all of radio before the fall.

"It's official, today is my last day." That was the word from David Lee Roth seconds into his syndicated radio show this morning (April 21), ending the nearly four-month CBS Radio experiment known as Roth Radio.

As reported yesterday, CBS Radio and XM Satellite Radio are expected to announce that XM's Opie and Anthony will replace Roth in the seven markets where he succeeded Howard Stern, who segued to Sirius Satellite Radio in January. The duo would host a three-hour show on terrestrial radio, then finish their day with a two-hour unedited version on satellite. XM would air all five hours.

Telling his audience he was informed of his dismissal "in the car on the way to work today," Diamond Dave also said the parting was not amicable: "I was booted, tossed and it's going to cost somebody."

Roth quipped that he and his "legal team of Darth Vader" planned to meet today with CBS officials to "settle like gentleman or start World War 9." Roth said he has retained the same legal team employed by Stern, whom he replaced on Jan. 3.

Roth claims he gave up considerable touring money to take a job with CBS, but also said he wanted to continue in radio, hinting that television or satellite radio are future possibilities. "I have a shout-out to Sirius," Roth said.

"Of course we had crappy ratings," Roth added, adding that he felt the show was finding an audience. "The flow was smoking."

Despite his on-air troubles, Roth was in a good enough mood last night to make a surprise appearance at a retirement party for a bond trader from Credit Suisse Securities at New York's Le Strada restaurant.

Decked out in a shiny blue leather outfit, he joined the house band for four songs, including Van Halen's "Jump" and "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love," the Kinks' "You Really Got Me" and ZZ Top's "Tush," a party guest tells Billboard.com.

Afterward, organizers presented Roth with a $10,000 check to be delivered to the non-profit Songs of Love Foundation, which creates personalized songs for seriously ill children.

other thread on this...

It's complete and utter bullshit. They knew Roth's show in advance and they just fucked that guy. He may have sucked, but they gave him no time to ease into the format and gain an audience.

O&A suck and XM are fucking morons for brokering this deal. It just makes XM look inferior to SIRIUS. Why in the hell would anyone pay to hear O&A on XM if they can hear the fucking show for free on regular radio?

So let's see...XM now only has what? MLB as exclusive content now that O&A are on terrestrial radio and NASCAR is leaving to SIRIUS next year? Yeah, XM's FABU.
