so my girlfriend gave me this mix cd of female singers from the 60s and 70s which was pretty good, but when carly simon's "you're so vain" came on it absolutely killed me. what a song. it had me maxing out my car stereo. it's like the platonic ideal of a "pop/rock" song to me right now in that it rocks just as hard as it pops without really being a proper rock n roll song. i've had it on non-stop repeat for the past few days. i listen to it first thing on my way to work. i listen to it at work. i listen to it when i get home. this song rules.

Elvis Presley and America, from U2's Unforgettable Fire remaster. You'd think it would at least be a track I hadn't heard before, but this one just keeps playing in my head. I know it's always in the running for "U2's worst song", but really, the half melodies and lyrical snippets are practically genius.
Seeing the lyrics actually printed out in the booklet was kind of revelatory.

Lately I have been gushing over "Lorelei" by the Cocteau Twins. I definitely think it's the best song off "Treasure," and maybe the best song in the entire Cocteau's disco.

maybe the whole music side should just be one thread since it's all about listening to music...
seriously threads are nothing alike AT ALL. One thread involves posting pictures of albums one is listening to, regardless of how much one is enjoying it. The other involves specific songs one is OBSESSED over. Should be a short list frankly. Shouldn't even always have a song at the ready for this thread, just happens on occasion.
This is no ground breaking thread or anything and it wouldn't surprise me if it's been done before, but not Now Playing - that's a whole other concept.

Lately, I cannot get enough of
The Rolling Stones - Street Fighting Man: Something about that part in the opening with the *thump-thump-thump* gets me going every time. Kanye West - Street Lights: Like Kanye doing sad new-wave. It's the perfect soundtrack for walking in the city at night. Sigur Ros - Inní Mér Syngur Vitleysingur: Man, was that last Sigur Ros album not the disappointment I had it pegged as last year. From Autumn to Ashes - Short Stories With Tragic Endings: I could literally not pick another From Autumn to Ashes song out of a hardcore police lineup, but this song is phenomenal: Almost nine and a half minutes that veer from hardcore to gorgeous female vocals and back and back again with splashes of loud drumming and violin. So good.

what's a quarter note triplet? i'm curious
best part in that track for me is 2:30 when it goes into that really colorful, awesome sounding rhythm out of nowhere. great. makes me wonder how much tyondai had to do with tracks like "rainbow" on mirrored. that track is another one that's been getting played consistently. wonderful melodies during the mid section in weird rhythms - clearly orchestrated. i think central market is but one insignificant release in what tyondai will eventually prove to be an incredible output (i predict).

um. quarter note triplet are triplets that are played at the speed of a quarter note. a triplet is when you subdivide a beat into 3. quarter note triplets are weird because if you are counting at a quarter note pulse, say 120 bpm on a metronome, your triplets will come out as 8th notes. you'd count them one-and-a, two-and-a, three-and-a, four-and-a, back to one-and-a, etc. so a quarter note triplet is basically what happens when you cut this in half and play triplets that have a quarter note value instead of an eighth note value. so it's still one-and-a, two-and-a but the feel is slowed down. to do this you would slow the metronome down to 60 bpm and count triplets. now if you played that count over a tempo at 120 bpm, you'd have quarter triplets. this is kind of a weird thing to explain over the internet, so i'm not sure if that was very helpful.
tyondai uses this throughout the entire song and ironically enough, he is playing the quarter note triplets on a metronome or something that sounds an awful lot like a metronome. the quarter note triplets are those off beat clicks that you hear coming in and out for the entire song. if you listen to them and count along one-and-a, two-and-a, three-and-a, etc. you can hear the triplet feel which is a total mindfuck when combined with the feel of the rest of the song. that is basically why quarter triplets are awesome, because they are a total mindfuck. meshuggah uses them a lot.
basically, the thing is that eight note triplets feel very natural, and quarter note triplets feel very unnatural.

"You Are Not Needed Now" by Townes Van Zandt. Can't get it out of my head. God-like melody:
I prefer the studio version on "High Low and In between" which seems to have a bit more swing to the melody. Here's the studio version:
Well, the birds were talking all at once and the old man mowing down his lawn he didn't look like much too bad a guy And I was thinkin' Hang on, man, something's wrong your blues they do seem to be gone heaven ain't bad but you don't get nothing done.
Lay down your head a while you are not needed now you are not needed now
Well, Allison laid a hex on me and every time I turn around it's swimming through the air above my bed I told Miss Higgs and she said fine as long as you're back in your room on time I keep you clean and the girls will keep you fed
Lay down your head with mine you are not needed now and we got things to do
Between the blankets made of wool the trains roll by every half an hour and the body can get no restin' done, that's true so I do my best, as best I can thinkin' big and making plans and wondering where them trains are rolling to
Lay down your head poor boy and feel how the ground does move and hear how them drivers sing
Well, goodbye friends, it's time to close everybody knows that's the way it goes where was it you lived in case I'm ever there Well, three doors down and two behind oh it gets a little bit out of hand sometimes don't let it fool you into thinkin you don't care
Lay down your head and fly I'll quietly pass you by you won't even see me go
If I thought about it long enough I just might make some kind of move watchful eyes are too hard on the soul With the smoke house just across the way and it's fog upon the light of day I'd be hard put comin' up with where to go
Lay down your head poor boy feel how the ground does move hear how them drivers sing What now, my darling one go find a little fun you are not needed now

Re: obsession, I keep coming back to last year's "She Pulled Machete" by Black Elk. It builds steadily from quiet & creepy to balls-out, with a chorus that recalls "She's So Heavy" and some delightful timekeeping on the edge of a snare maybe, throughout. Totally different for them, too.

in chronological order of obsession over the past two-weeks
Oxford Collapse - "Quiet Man" - bummed that Oxford Collapse broke up. Have been seeking out all their rarities, b-sides, and records. Came across "Quiet Man" from the Daytrotter sessions and have had it on repeat since.
This Charming Man - "There Is A Thunder (Out In The Distance) - was listening to Gaslight Anthem radio on last.fm to prepare for the House of Blues show and this song came up and I thought it sounded just like Gaslight, turns out it's the lead singers first band. Good song here. Too bad I blew all my last.fm listens on it the first day and haven't had chance to seek it out yet.
Gaslight Anthem - "Blue Jeans and White T-shirts" - we had a drinking contest at the HOB for everytime Gaslight said Virginia or Maria in their songs. We got pretty drunk.
Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti - "Jules Lost His Jules" - somehow got a hold of this on last.fm recommendations, which led to my current obsessions with R. Stevie Moore's "I Wish I Could Sing" and Woods "Night Creature".
April March - "Chick Habit" - cool song that somehow doesn't get old for me.
Billie Holiday - "Farewell To Storyville" - watched the movie New Orleans with Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong and the song has stuck with me since. This is my "We'll meet again" song, as one of my good friends moved back to New Orleans. "Blue Skies follow rain."
Yim Yames - "All Things Must Pass"

Yeah, I always liked this song and John's vocal on it. Maybe it's just because I haven't heard it in a while, but it seems so much clearer on the mono remaster. I prefer it to the original by miles. There's an urgency and a melancholy to John's vocal that just isn't there on the Arthur Alexander version. Maybe having a cold helped, I don't know.

The precious indie vibe is OK as long as it doesn't smear into an Apple commercial, and then into late period Sting.
