All right everyone, the time has finally come and the End Of Year polls are opening up.

Singles Lists are due Saturday, December 19. There aren't any exceptions to that. You've got about three weeks, so there shouldn't be any problems with people not having enough notice. Also, let me know when you submit your list if you are interested in writing blurbs for the top 40 singles.

I don't know the exact timeline for the results thread yet. Since I am working a full time job this year instead of being the college student with all the free time in the world, it is a little bit harder to figure out how long it will take me to put everything together. At this point, I'm imagining that the week of December 21-25 will have the Miscellaneous and Compilation/Reissue poll results and then the week of December 28-January 1 will have the album and singles polls with probably about 20-25 of each posted each day of the week. I will keep everyone updated on this as we get closer to that point. I do have about a week and a half off from Christmas to the start of January so the results will be all posted in this time frame, just maybe not on as tight of a schedule as they have in years past.

Just to go through the guidelines again:

-You can vote for as few as five 2009 singles or as many as one hundred 2009 singles.

-Singles include:
1. Songs with released 7 or 12", CD, or clearly identified digital singles bearing their name
2. EPs of both 5 songs and 22 minutes less (if either is greater, than it is eligible for the albums list)
3. Songs with a video (assuming not live, and assuming the artist didn't make one for every song on the album)
4. Songs that have charted on any major US or UK chart (except for download)
5. Singles released between December 2008 and December 8, 2009. Anything after that should be considered a 2010 release

-Voting for a single can include B-Sides and Remixes of the song on the same vote.

-To submit your list, either post it in the thread or PM it to me. Any list posted in this thread in countdown form will be considered a final list. If you need to make a change once your list is submitted, you can only swap one single out to replace with another. Also, if you can please format your numbered countdown as ARTIST - RELEASE NAME, that will really help me out when tabbing them.

-2008 vs. 2009 eligibility is broken down as follows--if you can make a case for it being 2009, you can vote for it. So that includes singles released in your country for the first time in 2009, singles that didn't receive wide exposure or peak on the charts until 2009, or singles that were released in Dec. 2008 and didn't have enough time to sink in before voting last year.

-Singles that received votes last year that are still eligible for the 2009 poll will carry over 10% of their 2008 total. Last year this didn't change any of the songs that made the top 100, but did boost up the handful that carried over points up a few spots.

-Finally, nothing that was on our Top 100 Singles of 2008 list is eligible. You can not, under any circumstances vote for anything that made the top 100 singles last year. Just so you know, these 100 singles are:

1 Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (feat. Antony Hegarty) / Blind (Frankie Knuckles Remix)
2 Estelle - American Boy (feat. Kanye West) / American Boy (Album Version)

If you're unsure that a song is a single, check rateyourmusic, discogs, or wikipedia. Also, we're had a bunch of single suggestion threads to take a look at for ideas (although I would always double check somewhere else to make sure that it really counts as a single just to be sure).

Also, one last thing I just want to remind everyone about. If there is a single that you're really passionate about but not many others know of it, don't wait until we start the countdown to complain about it not being higher. Use this thread to make sure that everyone else is made aware of it before it is too late to vote.

Man, all I have in my list at this stage is techno 12"s. Really need to get everything else straight.
Soundscape
EPs of both 5 songs and 22 minutes less (if either is greater, than it is eligible for the albums list)

I've never fully understood this. There are plenty of EP's that are longer than 22 minutes, but to vote them amongst albums at times seems unfair. And more than 5 tracks? I'd imagine about 1/2 the eps released every year have more than 5 songs.

the new Late of the Pier song "Blueberry" wouldn't qualify, even tho it leaked awhile ago, the release date apparently is December 14th.

I don't remember exactly when the EP decision was made, but it basically was done along the same lines as the UK charts are. An EP that has more tracks than that or is longer than that is classified as a full length release and places on the sales charts as such. It has never been an issue for our singles poll as longer EPs have placed on the albums list and for the most part, any EP with more than 5 tracks that has a possibility of placing in our poll has a video or promotional release for one of the tracks and we vote for that like a single.

Wait until next year for the Late of the Pier song. There is a physical release with a b-side scheduled for February.

Most EPs released each year don't have more than five tracks. No way. Looking at the top 100 for 2009 there are 16 that would qualify as singles and 4 as albums in the top 20. Very likely the same for other years as well.

Obviously a 7" inch with a flip-side is a single. As is a CD with the lead track and two or three b-sides. When you start going beyond that you are going past a single release into the world of mini-albums. No way can you be considering things that are 35 minutes long as a single.

It works pretty well, a 4 or 5 song EP that lasts about 20 minutes is a single. Something that's half an hour long with 8 tracks isn't going to be able to fit on a 7" so it wasn't considered a single.
Mitchell
Also "What Would I Want? Sky" is not a single. The Be Kind EP is eligible for the album poll.
mike2511
Is From Africa To Malaga by 'jj' eligible? Would probably vote for every song from that album as a single if possible, so want to know what I can throw on there.

FTR this works fine for rock/pop stuff... not quite as well for dance-oriented musics since dancefloor-oriented remixes stretch them over the length limit. There's a few things every year that have to drop entirely because they don't qualify for singles, but I'm obviously not going to put a dance track remixed twice and coming in at 27 minutes in with the albums. But it's not a big deal, and I recognize that no system is going to be prefect.
Mitchell
Surely if it's a mix of the same song then you can consider the original as a stand-alone digital release. I guess if you are looking to vote for the remixes themselves as well / instead of that doesn't help you out.
Raj (Noble Con)
Yeah, in most cases there's some sort of workaround, it's only a problem when you have a 12" with great remixes that goes above the time limit. Nothing that cripples the poll by any means, just something worth noting.

Some sites are calling it a single, but I don't believe there has been an official release. I'll probably include it and hope no one notices...
Mitchell
It has a video. That's the only evidence but it's good enough for this poll.

List is nothing to be ashamed of. Forgot about that Major Lazer, need to put that on mine.

It only seems that this year has been a poor one for mainstream pop music because the last few years produced fucking gold. "A Milli," etc.

Also:

11. Jay Z - Empire State of Mind

Hmm... I'm not sure, but I really hope I'm not the first one to have included Akron/Family - River...

The guy who has no Shakira, Electrik Red, or The-Dream on his list doth declare it a terrible year for pop music. Hm.

you think i pay attention to that hipster trash?

for the record, i'm joking. i haven't paid attention to much modern music this year.

Interesting how a not especially singles driven genre looks like it might totally dominate the singles list.

This poll always take slower to get going, at least partly because people haven't posted their singles lists 45 times throughout the year already.

Also, always a lot fewer people. Shame, it's always the superiour list.
Mitchell
It's slo hopefully because people are going through lists of singles, hearing new stuff and making a list of the ones they like. Not thinking of songs from albums they liked and trying find if they were singles.

Arse backward way of doing things.
Raj (Noble Con)
Mitch otm about a good approach for a singles list.

I think this year the mainstream stuff was too fragmented ...without a single clear Umbrella/American Boy-type pop rallying point for indie rock listeners, the list is ripe for Phoenix to swoop in and rack up a lot of high-ranking votes.

I'm thinking maybe indie rock will have a bigger percentage of the top 10 than the past few years, but pop will have a bigger percentage of the top 40 during the same period.
Eskimo Kisses
Idk, hopefully there's more pop/dance/rap/rnb voters to come. Hope so, at the moment it looks like indie all the way with maybe some token Dream songs.

Wonder where 'If I ever feel better' placed back in the day, infinitely better single than this '1901', thing.
Pavement Ist Rad
Why aren't the Mount Kimbie EPs on any of these lists?
Pavement Ist Rad
"1901" is great but "Lisztomania" should have as many high votes and neither songs touch "Too Young," "If I Ever Feel Better," or even "Everything Is Everything." Those are the facts.
Liffey
My Girls leaked around this time last year, didn't it? That song is still my #1 jam.

'Everything Is Everything' is probably my least favourite Phoenix single ever. And that includes 'Party Time'. It's not actively bad, just kind of dull.

Of the ones listed it goes something like

Too Young
If I Ever Feel Better
1901
Lisztomania

Everything Is Everything
Northern Voice
"1901" cracked the Alternative top 10 this week, so while we can argue about the quality of it with their past singles, it shouldn't be a shock that it places highest of the bunch when it clearly has had the widest crossover appeal. Also, it's awesome. Also, it's in a Cadillac commercial.
