I think the lack of response is due to the recognition by most of a rather
lame attempt at trolling by the original poster....

Jigga, I can name an infinitude of pop songs that rip girly-boy El DeBarge's presumably tiny nuts off and stuff them down his throat, thus saving us from that tinny bleating you apparently consider great vocalizing. The comparison between this and "intellectual art rock" is apples to airplanes, so to stay on your terms here's just one song that beats DeBarge's scrawny black ass back to the ghetto. Their guitarist just died, so instead of an RIP thread, I'll just leave this here for your edification.

Bruegs
Round 1 to jigga, by a distance
john the cool kid
i don't know about this song man. i can't hear what's so special about it, sounds like a song off Tarzan. That other song by the Suburbs isn't what i pictured intellectual art-rock to be either. The Cure's "Just Like Heaven" blows these songs to smithereens. Round 1 goes to me.

greatwhitehope
Really enjoy the fact that the suburbs arent intellectual art-rcok enough, so you pick... the cure. That'll show em!

john the cool kid
hahaha you're right. I take that point back
Vivian Darkbloom

I am going to add a genre category to my iTunes called "Intellectual Art Rcok"

The Suburbs track isn't meant to be intellectual art rock. The initial premise is ludicrous: Intellectual art rock vs. radio-friendly pop? Not the same intent, audience or purpose. Rather than try to find an example of something which doesn't bear comparison, you have to find a disposable pop song to beat DeBarge. As DeBarge suck, it shouldn't be that hard, regardless of whether The Suburbs make it or not.

Song's approximately same age as Monty, has hooks and melody, sold a ton of records - pretty much meets his standard of greatness.
theminimumcircus
Can't fuck with this song too much, but all it makes realize is how better something like "Nasty Girl" by Vanity 6 is.

I'd take Lionel Richie's "All Night Long" over that piffle any day. Same kinda groove, better singer, better 'audience participation' foreign language chanting. smile.gif

I'm pretty sure I have a grasp of the DeBarge song's meaning. (It's sex, right?)

After 20-odd years, I still have no idea what Lionel's on about. wink.gif
Angrimorfee
He does sing right after the tribal chants...."ooh yay, we going to have a party..." does that explain it well enough? smile.gif
UselessRocker
Why anyone even bothered with El DeBarge while Prince, MJ, Morris Day and Madonna were all in their prime is beyond me. The man should be given some form of torture as payback for me and other kids of my generation being forced to listen to this 1,000 times in the summer of '86.

By-Tor
I'm with Aggy on this one. Fun thing for me, is I hated Lionel Richie, all up until jsut the last few years. I guess his shit ages, like wine.
Duff.
itt Jigga, Montana, and Duff find common ground.

borrowed from merriam-webster:

main entry: fact
pronunciation: \ˈfakt\
function: noun
etymology: latin factum, from neuter of factus, past participle of facere
date: 15th century

1 : a thing done: as a obsolete : feat b : crime <accessory after the fact> c archaic : action
2 archaic : performance, doing
3 : the quality of being actual : actuality <a question of fact hinges on evidence>
4 a : something that has actual existence <space exploration is now a fact> b : an actual occurrence <prove the fact of damage>
5 : a piece of information presented as having objective reality

— in fact : in truth

mew making better pop music than lionel ritchie seems less than factual, no? or have you conducted some sort of wide-ranging, methodologically-sound survey which confirms this hypothesis?
Liffey
I don't want to shoot myself while listening to them, that was my main premise

also i'm wondering why you brought up mew for me to talk about. :/ seems like something people would try to avoid?
