Any time a band starts saying things like "this is going to be our 'fill in the blank' record", I think it raises a big red warning flag. This usually connotes they are more focused on theme than melody and songcraft. This is not good.
Quality of the songs should always take precedent over any perceived or plotted theme. Some would call this a dishonest approach to art. The results are usually mediocre at best. Once you have the best songs you can get, then worry about whether it's your "dirty drunk" record or your "R & B" record.
Radiohead recently announced their next will be their "movement and light" record. I can't wait for the Coldplay comparisons......
You do realize that the Flaming Lips have done exactly what you're talking about for the last 3 albums, right?
