I don't want to live in a world where anyone who considers "Danko/Manuel" filler isn't subject to a public stoning. I mean, yeah, personal opinion, to each their own, blah blah blah. But come on.

Wow...just....wow...the Isbell songs alone are not filler at all, just killer...

I'd have to sit back and listen to these and go from there, but...man...filler???

Obviously, we will differ on which songs make the cut on each album. For me, the songs I listed have issues or don't flow well with the album (Iwo Jima's vocal delivery, Danko's verse isn't nearly as good as the chorus, GLL is a little schmaltzy). The usual disclaimers apply. But I think the overall point I was making is that the DBT's could use an editor when it comes to album sequencing. It really bit them on Brighter. I mean, does anyone need to hear Home Field Advantage again?
Good discussion overall. And it's been a good opportunity to review the back catalog before the next one comes out. I'm digging parts of songs I haven't listened to in a while. Today, it's the lyrics on Gravity's Gone.

Apparently there's a Wilco style behind the scenes type documentary coming out too. Hopefully we'll be able to get some good insight into Jason's departure (and how his and Shonna's divorce affected the band).

Considering that Shonna's songs on the last record were better than anything off of Isbell's solo album, I don't know if that is true.
Heck, I'd even go as far as saying "I'm Sorry Houston" is the best song from the last two Trucker's albums.

Strongly disagree, (but w/o getting emotional) and "Dress Blues" blows 'em all away. Tells a story, and makes a statement. Not too many DBT songs ever did both.
But hey, I just don't like Shonna's voice.
BTW, Isbell has 2 solo albums out now, and they pretty much kick the Trucker's ass, or tie it, or whatever, since I'm starting to like their newer ones more lately.
But if you really wanna tussle, just compare Patterson solo/Isbell solo. (Sorry, Mr. Hood)

I liked Shonna at first. Having her be a regular contributing member in the songwriting department kind of bugs me though.
But comparing solo albums, Patterson's new one is so much better than Isbell's latest. "Dress Blues" is absolutely incredible, but he seems incapable of making a really solid album.

I guess I just expected more from Isbell. There seems to be too much focus on making it a band, especially with the last one, and it comes off sounding like a very run of the mill kind of band recording. The kind of thing local/regional bands do all the time without any notice. I really missed the songs on that one. I'm hard pressed to name one I really like. "Dress Blues" and "Outfit" are among the best songs of the previous decade, and I guess I just wanted more of that.

That's the perk of having (at least) two really good writers in the band. One of them can pick up the slack. Cooley's really come into his own over the last few albums. "3 Dimes Down" and "Self-Destructive Zones" were great off the last one.

I've heard information from two women I know who verify this. That said, it seems a lot of people in the entertainment business just have the success go to their head. They usually get into it for the back pats anyway, so this isn't a surprise.

this album is terrific.
the two shona songs don't sound like shona at all - the first, "you got another", is this wonderful torch-ballad thing, and she sounds totally unlike herself as on the last dbt album - more like a hope sandoval. there's a real sweetness to her voice, whereas i'd say something like "i'm sorry houston" has her voice sounding quite heavy, y'know? the other song she sings, "(it's gonna be) i told you so", is more like a classic 60s spector-pop tune. really good.
patterson hood absolutely SLAYS on this album. the song "drag the lake charlie" is brilliant, as is "the flying wallendas". his observational skills are so brilliant, so detailed - in your mind's eye, you see the scene playing out. awesome stuff.
cooley's best tune, possibly ever, is "the wig he made her wore". oustanding stuff.

the first 6 tracks on this are just incredibly good. but following on from shona's "you got another" is a damn tough ask, and the album heats up again for the final 3 songs, which rank alongside the first 6 in terms of absolute tastiness.
fave line so far actually comes from cooley, on "birthday boy":
the pretty girls from the smallest towns
get remembered like storms and droughts
that old men talk about for years to come
i guess that's why they give us names
so a few old men can say they saw us rain when we were young.
based on a weekend's listen, this is my fave dbt album since southern rock opera. its non-thematic basis may even find it displacing that classique. so, so listenable, and enjoyable.

haven't transcribed this pup yet, so i'm paraphrasing, but re the doco patterson said that it started filming in 05 and went thru to 07 - he said something along the lines of it following 'a pretty turbulent time for the band'.
the second album of `10 might not actually come out til `11. it depends. if this is their direct, positive and affirming record, the next one is their southern gothic side coming to the fore.
they're very, very happy with what they've achieved with this album, and think it begins a new era for the band; brighter than creation's dark was a summation of the band's previous work from southern rock opera onwards - he gave a nice lil rundown of what the band was going for with each album as a response to what had come before. this is a new beginning.
they knew shona had it in her to do something as amazing as "you got another". and the best song on the album, "the wig he made her wear", is based on a real life incident 35 miles from his home town that he saw on the tv news in norway, and then watched on court-tv when on tour in the states later in the year. it seemed to be following him and there really was 'an audible gasp' when they were produced, which inspired the song as he knew she'd get off.
dedicated to his 'sorta godfather' jerry wexler and jim dickinson.
