Wow, this shit is even more fucked. On all 6 networks, ther are 800 writers, only 50 are black, and they on UPN. even good black shows like bernie mack and everybody hates chris, its whites that write it. What does that mean, are we yet equal? Are blacks not funny? Did our lack of education hold us back? what do BEn who is a good open minded liberal say about this.
Jimmy TKB
Maybe blacks are all illiterate like you?*

*Black comedians are the funniest ever, Pryor, Rock, Chapelle, etc.

inversely, 93.5% of TV comedies suck ass, so there's a possible correlation here. no need to get upset.

I was looking at the WGA west's 2005 report. After a seven year study, minority writers are up from 6 to 9% among televison writers. However, they also note that 20% of the guild chose not to reveal their race or age so the accuracy of these numbers are somewhat suspect.

Still, it does note that this is seen as an improvement and while other aspects of the business go unchanged. (distribution for instance) The role of women and minorities is continuing to grow. Also, it is minority comedies that have had the highest average minority writers. CBS having the greatest share. UPN second.

thrillho
well, duh. all comedy writers are graduates of ivy league schools and minorities don't go to/ aren't let in to ivy league schools.

Whoever's writing Girlfriends deserves a raise. That shit's off the hook.

There are many sitcom's I would never want to admit I wrote for. Some shows black should be happy they don't write for.

Blacks make up what is the percentage of the population where these networks broadcast??

Are they really underrepresented??

What percentage of the writers are Jews? I'm guessing it's much, much greater than the population as a whole. So what? I'm not Jewish, and I'm not complaing. That's the way things work. Some groups are better in certain areas than others.

I remember a Louis CK interview in the Onion a few years back when they asked him about his stint as head writer on the Chris Rock show. CK said that when Rock took him from Conan he said he didn't want any "funny because it's ghetto or gangsta" humor. He wanted the same off the wall the style that was on the Conan bits. Rock hired a white guy as head writers because he thought they tended to have a comedic edge and who wasn't going to go through the motions of modern African American comedy. Chappelle followed suit in Season 2.

I would like to give my opinion on this subject because I do think it's interesting and worth discussing. I just can't articulate it without coming off racially condescending or sounding out of touch.

I would like to see more diversity of writers, actors and situations in drama programs. I realize that the "market forces" have dictated that blacks don't want to watch dramas--and whites don't want to watch "black" dramas--but maybe an effort should be made toward that.

(Soul Food on Showtime is the only black-centric drama that I can recall in the past decade or so)

What is the population percentage of African-Americans in the US?

Isn't it under 10%? If so, wouldn't those numbers correlate to the population?
Angrimorfee
Of course, we could take a poll of how many African-Americans actually wish they were sitcom writers. That would be more revealing.

Illinois has a 15% black population; nationally, yes, it hovers around 10%.

As a friend of mine once piquantly observed,
"It just seems like there's more of 'em."

So then the percentage of black writers in sitcoms is close to the percentage of black people in the US. No racism, then.
