In this season of giving thanks, local female musicians give back to the Chicago community at “Covers to Cover II”. After years of performing original music shows, these musicians pay homage to their favorite bands to benefit CAWC Greenhouse Shelter, a place where women can establish independence from their abusers.
The musicians include members of The Mekons, The Dials, The Venom Lords, The Maybenauts, Kim, CHIRP DJs and more. These one-time-only bands play covers of The Cars, Kiss, David Bowie, The Breeders and more. The music styles range from alt-country to new wave to Hawaiian to rock and roll. This fun benefit will be MC'd by Rattina, the female rat puppet from the TV show “Chic-A-Go-Go!”.
Connections for Abused Women and their Children is committed to ending domestic violence. Using a self-help/empowerment approach, they provide shelter for women and children, as well as counseling, advocacy and a 24-hour hotline for people affected by domestic violence. They work for social change through education, service collaboration and institutional advocacy.
$1,500.00 was raised for the woman's homeless shelter Deborah's Place at the first "Covers for Cover" show in 2006. "Covers for Covers II" hopes to raise even more money and social consciousness for vulnerable women and their children.
