SOMB Says: This is a pretty versatile album. It’s been talked about as a ‘drug record’, and while I have embraced the successful return of microdots and emergence of mephedrone while spinning such appropriate hits as ‘Ecstasy’, these songs deserve much more than that. JJn02 is the sort of LP you can play while slipping a length to your latest one night stand at 4AM. You can play this record to come down or to come up. You can play it to restrain yourself when a fat, middle aged, bespectacled arsehole throws the last pack of chilli Pringles in his shopping trolley and you have to settle for prawn cocktail. So the reason I like this so much is that it fits almost any situation, its vibe easy enough to wash over you in the background, and the music complex enough to listen to avidly.
No collection of songs this year has matched this melodically either; every song is beautiful and wistful and euphoric or sad. Everything stirs emotion in me; I remember first hearing it and listening to the whole thing on repeat time and time again and still never getting bored of it, continually moved. One last point refers to quality control; how many albums drag on and drag on and drag on? Feelings don’t always last 77 minutes, and nor should the CD’s you put on to reflect them. By cutting this back to nine short, perfectly crafted songs, this never outstays its welcome, and instead encapsulates my current mood without outliving it. One of about three records I can be passionate about this year; everyone should hear this and embrace it. - mike2511
I can't agree more with the italicized section. So freaking true.
And I don't take drugs and still really enjoy this record.
