A race to solve the puzzle? Or they're rolling them across the floor?
Mitchell
My best time for a random cube given to me is 4 mins.

haha, the url tag says they are rubik's cube record holders!

what i'm attracted to is that there is a system to it and so few people can figure it out. just like spider solitaire, every game can be won. every cube can be solved. if a guy can figure that out, think about the other box of mystery he can really put his mind to and master. catch my drift?

p.s. solace, i'm no expert... and every girl's body is dif. i know what i prefer. i mean, you don't want the elephant to fuck the mouse, yet, you don't want the ant to either.

shit videogames too. but that's not as focused and there are too many distractions. loses it's strict appeal. i tend to just ride around banging into things or commiting outrageous suicides for kicks.

Brothers square off in cubing contest

Dave Murphy, Chronicle Staff Writer

Friday, January 13, 2006

When Tyson Mao's father brought home a Rubik's Cube in the late 1980s, Tyson was intrigued by the colorful contraption, but couldn't come close to solving it. After all, he was only 4 years old.

But in 2003, when younger brother Toby Mao came home from a summer program, he had the solution to the cube -- and taught his brother how to solve it. Now Tyson Mao can solve the cube in less than two minutes.

Blindfolded.

The Hillsborough brothers are among the stars of speedcubing, a competition that often involves solving the 3-by-3-by-3 cube in less than 20 seconds. There can even be quirkier aspects of the competition, such as with larger or smaller cubes, or by solving them blindfolded -- Tyson Mao's specialty -- or one-handed or by using only your feet.

The brothers said some people have even set records for solving the cube using chopsticks, or hopping on a pogo stick.

Now 21-year-old Tyson Mao and fellow students at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena put together about four speedcubing competitions a year, including one on Saturday at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Anyone can show up and compete, but Caltech's ringers will put a lot of amateurs through the wringer.

Tyson Mao held the world record for blindfolded solving last year, only to see it broken by Caltech classmate Leyan Lo. Even with no records at the moment, the brothers' expertise has brought them other sorts of notoriety.

"We were hired to teach Will Smith how to do the Rubik's Cube," said Toby, 17, a junior at Crystal Springs Uplands School in Hillsborough. The actor needed to pick up the skills for his film "Pursuit of Happyness," due out this year.

Tyson Mao also is on the new season of the "Beauty and the Geek" reality show, which premiered Thursday night.

But competitions such as Saturday's are their most common challenges. Tyson Mao said that in a typical contest, speedcubers solve the cube five times from different configurations, then their fastest and slowest times are thrown out and the remaining three are averaged. Before solving any cube, the competitors have 15 seconds to study it. The world record average in competition is slightly under 15 seconds, with the fastest single effort at 11.75 seconds.

Blindfolded competitors solve the cube only three times, and are judged simply on the fastest time. Tyson Mao said the speedcubers look at how the 54 colored faces are arranged on the cube, then slip on the blindfolds and go. But if their memories play tricks on them, they fail.

"Time starts when you start memorizing it," he said. "I can memorize the cube in about 40 or 45 seconds."

Julie Suh, a public programs coordinator with the Exploratorium, said the museum's first speedcubing contest last January drew so much interest that she is happy to see the cubers come back.

"It sparked a lot of interest in applied mathematics," she said.

I've seen someone do it behind his back in under a minute just by looking at it for minute before hand and knowing what was where.

i had a conductor who would solve a rubik's cube WHILE conducting an orchestra. it was amazing, and slightly disconcerting.

simple. they have to be able to beat me and i'm good at these kinds of games. don't get me started on my love of chess.

raj was buggin' me about the scrabble game we were suppossed to play but i think we forgot about it.

My brother and his gal play scrabble all the time and are great at it...I however, have some difficulty. Non-spelling games/puzzles however, I kick all types of ass in.

ha, that's right you suck at spelling. let's have a spider solitaire contest sometime. if we can figure out how to do that... maybe start on the same day, reset your scores, then screen capture the results? god, this is nerdy.

I went to high school with a guy who could solve the Cube in any configuration within 30 seconds. He went to MIT on a full ride, and later invented some programs for the synthesizer to reproduce other instrumental sounds - he's a multimillionaire now.

And actually a nice guy.

you'd need to decide ahead of time if the "undo" is allowed. wait, is there undo in spider, or am i thinking of freecell?

It's just math, though. Spatial ability is good, but critical thinking has the edge.
