^ Cover would be awesome minus the blue background and the high school art student paint splatters. Great illustration.

Graphic design majors in college still do those splatters. The stock floral designs as well. I shake my head every time I walk through the student gallery at my school. I agree though, the illustration is very well drawn. Probably would be better without text though.

I hate the Jonsi one. It seems like he's so desperately trying to be like Coldplay. Which annoys the hell out of me.
I love the Portugal one. I totally dig their aesthetic and really like all their other album covers as well. I'm not sure if the lead singer designed this cover, but he did design their last albums art with water colors and then reinterpreted it with black and white for the acoustic release:

I haven't listened to a lot of their stuff, but I thought of them fondly because I really dig their cover of Damien Jurado's "Ohio." That artwork pretty much cancels out any good will, though. Ugh.

I'm guessing undo doesn't like it because it's the album title, but I don't know whether that title came first or the album has just been called that because it happens to be on the cover. Feel me? Sort of like The White Album. TBH though, I don't really know what he's on about.

I just assumed that they were the graves of her parents, which made me wonder how they'd died and, more importantly, what the future holds for the girl in the foreground. She looks 12, maybe 13 (?) and is now on her own, either being shuffled between relatives who resent her or living in fostercare. The blank expression on her face suggests that she still doesn't know what to make of their death or her situation. What's in store for her? She hasn't had a haircut since they died and, from the looks of it, either doesn't have a female role model in her life to teach her how to dress, is too socially withdrawn to care anymore, or is in the beginnings of a gothic phase that will guide her through the rest of her adolescence. This photo looks like it could have been taken any time between 1975 and 1995, so at least she'll probably start listening to The Cure for consolation. At worst, she'll start cutting herself, hanging out with the wrong crowd, getting passed around from house to house and child psychologist to child psychologist, and destroying her life before she ever had a chance.
The CD is out in my car so I can't look at it now, but the tombstone on the left is for a woman who died in 1960-something, and was born in the 1800s. So obviously, this isn't her mother. It's not even her grandmother, unless you're now willing to bet that the photo was taken in the 1960s or early 70s. And everyone's grandparents die. It's sad, but it's not a tragedy, and not album cover worthy or album-theme worthy (sorry Arcade Fire!). So what looks like a poignant photo at first glace that at least made me imagine an entire story behind it seems to be nothing but a nicely-composed but meaningless snapshot.

Indeed. The thing that always makes me laugh about album covers is that, whatever it is, it was at one point a serious discussion in that band. Someone was saying "we're doing cat astronaut" and there was probably one guy who was like "cat astronaut? Guys, it was funny at 2 in the morning but seriously this represents the album".

just out of curiousity, what part of that photo screams a certain period of time to you? is it the clothes? probably what dates it for me. anyway, reason i ask is because when i look at certain photographs it sometimes blows my mind when i know the time period in which they were actually taken. for instance, some of the pictures from prokudin-gorskii during the early 1900's look as if they were taken in the sixities and seventies. i'm not really sure what time period
view of the monastery from the solarium reminds me of...looks like a picture taken yesterday during the making of
