God damn it. I'm the ultimate Cam fan/apologist, and yet these fucking random-ass mixtapes always pass me by. THAT shit is clearly classic. I'm just furious that I didn't even know it existed, until now. Continue. Sorry.

Not yet, but it's due out in Europe in March via Prophecy (no NA date yet, but one is imminent), so it'll leak soon enough.

that alcest cover is great. i'm sure the music will be just as gorgeous.
to make up for all the terrible rap mixtape art, here's a great one from oj da juiceman:

fitting considering the typeface debate going on in the j newsom thread.

people are liking that bullshit? looks like typical baltimore art school bullshit (and yes, i know they're not from bmore, but whatever). that shit crested a while ago, excuse the pun.
edit: the mgmt, not the wu-massacre.

Feb 17 2010, 03:44 PM
I hate that MGMT cover. The "It's cool cause it's shit" aesthetic (a la Merriweather Post Pavilion) does nothing for me.
The Wu-Massacre cover, however, is badass. Always been a fan of Bachalo's art, from Shade and Generation X, to Steampunk. Pity he's mostly stuck doing hired hand bullshit these days.

Feb 17 2010, 03:58 PM
ogawa, once again you prove yourself a force for good.
that junk art aesthetic has its place and that place is not on the cover of a major label release. typical rich kid slumming act. i think about dan deacon's jump from the spiderman of the rings album art (eh, inoffensive, colorful) to the bromst cover (which is fucking gorgeous and evocative). this mgmt cover is just lazy.

That was just one example. I could throw out Little Feat, Grateful Dead, Miles Davis' On The Corner, just about any prog record from the 70s, etc.

The cover of
Bromst is pretty cool. Didn't really give much of a shit about the music, though.
I'm not really sure how this is lazy though. It's a commissioned cover. Frankly, for an album by MGMT, it's pretty fitting.

I just don't like Ausgang. And I don't think STE was blanket-condemning Pop Art, which encompasses so many different styles, but rather the specific style of work that Ausgang produces (and has been producing for quite some time now). Ausgang doesn't really belong in the same company as the other artists you mentioned, though (regarding categories, not necessarily quality).

Feb 17 2010, 04:29 PM
yeah, what ogawa said.
i'm not trying to criticize the whole of pop art. hell, i love a good deal of it. i just think that this particular incarnation brings a recent movement to mind, one that is ill-fitting for a major label artist, and that the whole thing smacks of a creative dearth. i like mgmt, so i'm not trying to bash the band, but this cover is just kinda ugly. not offensively so, but a boring eyesore. at least mpp had the optical illusion going for it. this looks like a freshman mica art project.

I'm not sure how this or MPP fall into "cool because its shit" category, they both seem like legit, well polished, attention grabbing covers to me. cool because its shit would be those stupid fucking indie drawings.
