post things you listened to / regularly listen to on your headphones walking around the city / campus and so on

wish i could find a larger pic of this

Incarcerated by Abstraction by Flying Luttenbachers

i'm going to order a vinyl of this as the past few walks to class have proven it to be "a masterpiece" of sorts (in the genre of cosmic music)

From some websight, and known as common folklore around the "yard"

There has been a long standing myth that "California Dreamin'" was written to express John Phillips' experience at the United States Naval Academy.[citation needed] Midshipmen call the winter period at the Academy the "Dark Ages" owing to both the short hours of daylight and the extra burden of final exams added to an already strenuous workload. It was believed the song was in essence a day in the life of Phillips during these "Dark Ages" thinking and dreaming of a warmer climate.

Probably bullshit. I still listened to it many times on headphones while there, marching on restriction, concealing the illegal contraband in my watchcap.

Walking to class I also sang what was, at the time, a really rad new song by The Darkness called, I Believe in a Thing Called Love, and it confused many a young man and lady.

That's about it for my fake college experience, as music was largely banned there.

Check out Systems Emerge From Complete Disorder, it's another one man genius album. I prefer the full band stuff from this, er, last decade but s'all good.

Someone who likes minimal electro is in my experience a million times more fun to hang out/party with than someone who likes the generic indie turd that you and half of this board exalts over.
spiritofeden
bra, i pretty much only talk about Oasis and The Stones on the SOMB.
Waves Within
Exactly.

Classic of our times.

They only surpassed it with 'Dark and Long'.
Sid Hartha
Lately on the train commute it's been Blind Blake - All The Published Sides, The Psych Funk 101 comp from Stones Throw, Miles Davis' Get Up With It, Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions, with some loose tracks by P.F. Sloan, Gary Glitter, The Chi-Lites, Simon & Garfunkel and Elvis.

Exactly.

would hardly call them generic Indie.....
Waves Within
Oasis since 1997 have pretty much been the definition of 'generic indie'. Well, perhaps not the generic indie sound around today, but pretty generic and derivative nonetheless.

The Stones have been generic since about 1980.

But at least it's not Animal Collective.
spiritofeden
both bands released their most "out there" records post both of the dates you have mentioned sir.
Waves Within
I'm going on the singles for Oasis and when I saw them live last year, where they were good but seemed pretty paint by numbers. No songs sounded particularly 'out there'.

I haven't listened to any Rolling Stones recently except for a couple of their early 90's albums, which I found pretty boring. I'm not sure why I'm even debating them to be honest.
Ned
but, "indie?" the rolling stones... little indie band that could.
spiritofeden
yeah, just 2 working class indie groups.
Waves Within
Everything upbeat with a guitar is referred to as 'Indie' in the UK nowadays, so I don't feel bad about tarring them with that brush.
spiritofeden
are guns and roses an indie band? lol
Ned
So "indie" is the new "alternative." I guess I buy that to an extent, especially since it's UK and I'm out of that realm, hence too ill informed to object. Still though, calling 2 bands "indie" (once stood for "independent") who at one time or another were arguably the BIGGEST and most popular thing in the world, on major lables, and playing rock/roll/pop songs. Man... I'll just never be able to think of that as "indie."

I'm actually starting to hate the term "indie" as much as "alternative."
Waves Within
Yeah, nobody says alternative here, it's just 'indie'. It's just a turn of phrase, a word than has acquired a new meaning, it doesn't mean literally independent. It's a style of music, not a statement about how the band releases it. Language morphs and changes. It's just the cultural differences.
spiritofeden
here is a lesson.

this is an "indie band"

this is the worlds greatest Rock and Roll band.

do you see the difference?
Waves Within
I just saw two bands that sucked ass.

You expect me to take patronising music suggestions seriously off a guy who equates someone listening to minimalist dance music with someone being boring to hang out with.
