It's called "Shepherd's Delight." And it's one of the better songs on side 6.

Show some respect.

Food on the brain.whoops

That's not saying much is it.

Incidentally this album is about the same length as Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde on Blonde combined.

Which blogs hold the consensus that albums shouldn't have big ideas anyway? Is it some made up ones?

Right. Because the words "bloated" and "sensibility" never come up on the "indie tastemaker" sites......

If you listened to Oasis on shrooms, you would never listen to them again except for maybe Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova.
spiritofeden
yeah, Oasis is really more of a drinking and having a fun time with some friends kinda music.

not really the kinda music to do shrooms and drive around in the woods........

lol... 3 discs, 2 hours+. i will not be listening to this once. anyone on the fence about ys will be jumping off. good for her for doing her own thing, but i'm going to wait til she puts out another milk eyed mender (which i'm sure will happen eventually).

Guys I wanna talk about Joanna Newsom.

You ruined this for me.
stephen thomas erlewine
fuck it, killer. let's talk about joanna. i listened to ys twice last night/this morning. better than i remember. won't usurp mender in my estimation, but each song possesses some ephemeral quality that differentiates it from the others. used to think of the album as a bit of a slog, a jumble, but that really isn't true. it's not just virtuosic, but enjoyable and rewarding.
Ogawa
"Pa pointed out to me, for the hundredth time tonight, the way the ladle leads to a dirt-red bullet of light.
Squint skyward and listen. Loving him, we move within his borders. Just asterisms in the stars' set order.

We could stand for a century, starin' with our heads cocked in the broad daylight at this thing.
Joy, landlocked in bodies that don't keep, dumbstruck with the sweetness of being till we don't be.
Told; take this. Eat this"

Kills me every time. One of the great songs of the decade. I love the entire album, but that track gets endless replay from me.

My favorite Ys listening took place on a very bittersweet drive from Palm Coast, Florida back up here to PG, MD. I think that was the first time I actually paid attention to "Monkey and Bear" for real.

I saw her in 05 at Bonnaroo, and there was this shirtless college age guy from SC standing next to me. He seemed at first glance to be a seriously broish bro. But then he started talking about how she was pretty much the greatest thing he'd ever heard in his life. He was just drinking a beer and chilling. He kept talking about how the wind was carrying the music towards us.

I believe this man was on acid. I know I was.

three weeks ago i went out dancing with some friends, including one ex-girlfriend who was having a fight with her ptsd-suffering enlisted husband. she needed to get away from him, he was behaving in an abusive manner. after dancing, she asked if she could crash at my house, and though it'd been years since we dated, i hesitated before saying yes. we smoked a joint and laid around the living room, talking and listening to music. she asked if i could put on joanna newsom, and i obliged, unthinkingly. within the first few plucks, i remembered how i had played milk eyed mender for her, on the night of our first date, after she consented to come home with me. i broke up with her, months later, no longer being able to tolerate her quirks, her looks and minor mental illness issues. she told me, while listening to the album, how i had ruined it for her, how she couldn't hear it without thinking of our time together. it was as tender and intimate a moment as i've had of late. i didn't want to get too tender, because i knew where that would lead. her husband, despite his issues, is far better for her than i ever was, at least as far as partnerdom is concerned. so we laid on couches, stoned beyond physical control, and listened with the lights off, neither of us sleeping nor talking, just feeling the air and remembering.

sure it does. anyone such as myself who liked milk eyed mender and felt apprehensive about the direction she headed in on ys (far more elaborate lengthier songs) will probably not have much interest in this album. when she goes back to writing songs of normal length i will once again listen to her.

Thank you to Ogawa, STE, and killerparties for steering this thread back towards Joanna discussion. I have no issue with Ghostbusters or Carey Mulligan but neither belong ITT thank you.

Anyway, what do you all think of the new songs? I wasn't quick enough to listen to the stream of '81 on the Drag City website, but I did really enjoy the "Easy" clip from her Sydney Opera House show last week on youtube.

Joanna certainly brings out many emotions in people as you guys upthread have mentioned. "Emily" is great but to me her best song is "Peach, Plum, Pear"; it just has this amazing poignancy. The way she phrases the vocal and then pauses suddenly and unexpectedly is brilliant and it usually leaves me blubbering like a big baby.

Why does it matter what length they are as long as they are of high quality?

ahhh yes, the dreaded 4+ min song...a strange and unnatural thing.

well it doesn't, but on ys she adjusted her songwriting a lot to give the lyrics more weight and emphasis. so in that sense its fundamentally different than mender.

I guess some people think fucking the psycho girl with the unstable husband with military killing-training is the best move and that Joanna writes wonderful for music to do that to.

Just seemed like an overreaction to the same sort of bro-havior that nick's post was obviously mocking in the first place.

I miscalculated how a "Bro Joke" in a thread about a woman that plays the harp and writes 10 minute songs about monkeys and bears would go over. Also, I did not anticipate that STE would be the one to get all cunty about it.
