Pretty stupid the amount of disparity on discussion here between Hoom and ISBiC IMO.

When Laura's publicity photos involve swimsuits and heels, this board will give its undivided attention.

doubt sh could pull it off anyways. :/

Laura Marling can now compete with Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell

that's just stupid. no, she can't.

Yet it runs much like Bob Dylan's Blood On the Tracks

I'm late to the party as always.

First listen: wow, this is dull and meandering...3 fucking disc, ugh.
Second Listen: ok, there are some gems in here... 3 fucking discs, ugh.
Third listen: love a handfull of track, but 3 fucking disc?

I have no urge to ever listen to this in its entirety again. The third listen was strictly to weed out the tracks I liked. A number of songs I dropped had fleeting moments of greatness that were bookended by minutes of snooze inducing tedium. Here is the rough mix:

Have Just One On Me (59.1mins, one fucking disc.)
In California
'81
Jackrabbits
Good Intentions Paving Company
Go Long
On a Good Day
Baby Birch (easily my favorite of the group)
Kingfisher
Does Not Suffice

See I think pretty much every song has value. I've tried to figure this out but at this point I'm not sure what I would cut. In any case, you gotta have the title track on there!

finally listened to that laura marling album and i can't say it knocked my socks off or anything. the dylan references are totally off the mark, as are those to newsom. it's a solid batch of folk songs, but i'd put it on the level of marissa nadler, which is to say, well-conceived and executed, but ultimately not interesting enough to be worthy of such hyperbole.

What a mess of a song. I'm not going to devote a third of a disc, it's 19 mins long, to what amounts to maybe 2-4 minutes of interesting music. It's exactly what I meant by "bookended by minutes of snooze". She needs an editor.

I wouldn't put Marling on Nadler's level. Songs III: Bird on the Water is a really good album - easily better than HOOM or anything Marling has done.

i've only heard a couple of nadler's records. can't recall if bird was one of them. i suppose the comparison was meant in terms of vocal and musical style, as well as the narrow focus of that style. not comparing their songwriting. dylan and mitchell were making radical music in their heyday, and newsom is definitely a little stranger and more idiosyncratic than most modern folk artists. i don't even know if much of hoom (or ys) can be described as folk. marling isn't bad by any means, but she's working within a specific range, and without revolutionizing anything. same goes for nadler.

Nothing Marissa Nadler has done is as good as any one of Joanna Newsom's albums. I totally agree with the assessment of Nadler above that her songs are well-executed but ultimately kind of bland.

And FWIW I think The Saga of Mayflower May is better than Songs III.

There's a 7:30 show tonight at the Vic. I've got two tickets but I don't feel like leaving my house with this weather and everything.

My advice: drink a cup of coffee and get the fuck over there.

Yeah, you're way too young to use that excuse.

Just took a four hour nap and looked out my window to find ole Mr. Sun.

I'm on my way.

"In California" has been hitting me especially hard for the past week, particularly this part:

I don't belong to anyone. My heart is heavy as an oil drum. And I don't want to be alone. My heart is yellow as an ear of corn. And I have torn my soul apart from pulling artlessly with fool commands.

[and this is the part that really fucking hits hard]

Some nights I just never go to sleep at all, and I stand shaking in my doorway like a sentinel, all alone. Bracing like the bow upon a ship and fully abandoning any thought of anywhere but home, my home.

I get that quivering lip shit happening whenever that part comes on. Don't understand it. Great song.
