Well, this was posted on Drag City's website earlier today.



And it's now been confirmed as the title for the new Joanna Newsom record which is out on Feb 23 in the USA.

Also, for some reason it gets released in Australia four days earlier than everywhere else. Awesome.

I'll listen to this album if there are more than 6 songs and none of them are longer than 6 minutes.

Ys is almost album of the decade material.

Still hard to imagine the "I jizzed in my pants" guy enjoying a quiet night of Law & Order: SVU with the "HE SAID HAND THAT PEN OVER TO MEE-EEEEE! POETASTER" girl.

went and found some other new live songs and they all sound great.

Review copies are going out now, it has 3 discs and is 18 tracks long, longest is 11 minutes.

Total length is around 2 hours I've heard.

thought i read that there wouldn't be any preview copies...but i'm glad to have confirmation of the three disc length.

I'm sad that people continue to miss out on the genius of Y's.

Its certainly going to be right up there in my decade list.

I am really keen to hear this just to see if she is going in the same direction as Y's or is going to strip it back to what she was doing first. Either way im sure its going to be great.

That new song, "81" is kinda pretty but kinda forgettable. I go back and forth on Newsom. I initially found her too precious and affected. Then some song of hers popped up on a compilation and it really surprised me and won me over. I bought The Milk-Eyed Mender and enjoyed it a lot. Then Ys on paper sounded like an ambitious album that I wanted to like, but I never liked it. To this day, I don't remember anything from it. It wasn't horrible, just this forgettable series of long songs. I think one thing that keeps me from truly enjoying her stuff is the nagging feeling that I like the idea of Newsom (weird-but-attractive Manic Pixie Dream Girl plays harp, makes ambitious records and sings with the voice of a music geek's idea of an angel) more than the reality.

i'd rather listen to Rebirth. 3 discs is torture.

So basically this is Ys x3. I love Ys, don't get me wrong, but three long six-tracked LPs at once is going to be hard to stomach.

I'll probably listen to it once or twice; then make a mix of the songs that I"ll actually listen to and put them on one disc.

Edit: Also, that live track up there is great; I take it thats the second on the third disc?

maybe it's just that too much time has gone by without new stuff from her, but 81 is really hitting the spot for me. spare, sure, but with a gorgeous melody anchoring the song. this is pretty much all i want and expect from her. ys was good, but not as emotionally bare as milk-eyed mender. the added ornamentation definitely had something to do with that.

also, i'm already sick of people harping (sorry, bad pun) on about the three disc length. no such thing as too much of a good thing. at least in this instance. if the material is strong enough for release (it's not like she's notoriously prolific or anything), then it's worth digesting, regardless of how long that process takes. all this sniping about it being three discs long just makes me want to shout 'then don't fucking listen to it'. not that complicated an ordeal. seriously.

Fuck that, two hours is along time to sit and listen, attentively, to one album once let alone multiple times.

A couple "amens" for you, ste. "'81" is gorgeous. The idea of having three discs full of wonderful Joanna music in the near future is all I need to go to sleep happy tonight.

But do you have to listen to it all at once?

I find it absolutely refreshing. Just like the best album of 2009, Newsom is not interested in conforming to some sort of pre-set standard album length to please blog critics who have some sort of bizarre consensus that albums should:

1. have no big ideas
2. clock in at ten quick songs or less

I applaud Newsom.

she got some junk in the trunk. That's 'aight.

For the terminally dim, I wasn't expecting it to be 24 songs in half-an-hour.

It would be churlish not to applaud the ambtion (and I'm not going to label it pretentious) but I can only think of two albums longer than two hours that I semi regularly play Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and Sandinista! and you can skip 'Shepard's Pie' on that. You can't skip through tracks this length and it's not like Ys yielded results from first listen.

This is not just going to be a struggle for ADD indie fans to get through in one go. If I want to give it three or four spins that could take an entire working day.

It's called "Shepherd's Delight." And it's one of the better songs on side 6.

Show some respect.

Which blogs hold the consensus that albums shouldn't have big ideas anyway? Is it some made up ones?
