DOVER, Del. — An elementary school teacher accused of having sex with a 13-year-old student has been arrested and charged with multiple counts of rape, authorities said.

The teacher allegedly had sex with the boy 28 times during the last week of March, and on at least one occasion allowed the boy's 12-year-old friend to watch, authorities said. She also gave the students alcohol, according to New Castle County Police.

Some parents describe Claymont Elementary School teacher Rachel L. Holt as a hip, caring teacher who took a personal interest in her students and their education.

But one father thought Holt's interest in his 13-year-old son was a little too intense.

After overhearing a flurry of telephone calls last week between Holt and his son, the boy's father went to police Monday to report that his son was "having inappropriate contact with his teacher."

On Tuesday, New Castle County police detectives charged Holt, 34, of the 8500 block of Park Court in Wilmington, with 28 counts of first-degree rape, two counts of providing alcohol to a minor and one count of unlawfully dealing with a child.

Holt, who faces a hearing on the charges Monday, was ordered to have no contact with the boy. She was being held in the Baylor Correctional Institution in lieu of $560,450 cash bail.

According to court records, Holt acknowledged that between March 24 and Friday she had sexual intercourse with her student 27 times and that she once performed oral sex on the boy. All of the sexual encounters occurred at the sixth-grade science teacher's Paladin Club apartment, police said.

Holt also is accused of providing beer to the victim and one of his 12-year-old classmates, New Castle County Acting Police Chief Lt. Col. Scott McLaren said.

"On at least one occasion, Holt allowed the victim's 12-year-old friend to watch them having sex," McLaren said. During their relationship, police said, Holt also "took the victim out to dinner and allowed him to drive her vehicle."

Holt, who is divorced, told detectives that she got permission for the boy to spend the night at her home by calling his father's girlfriend and pretending to be the mother of one of his friends asking if he could sleep over.

Holt is a graduate of Padua Academy and Wilmington College. She was hired by Brandywine School District in November 2002 and taught at Mount Pleasant Elementary for less than a year before joining Claymont Elementary nearly three years ago.

Between 1997 and 1999, Holt was a teacher at Christ Our King School in Wilmington's Ninth Ward, Catholic Diocese of Wilmington spokesman Bob Krebs said.

Police said they are unsure whether there are other victims, but no allegations had been made against Holt previously.

Brandywine District School Superintendent Bruce Harter said Tuesday that Holt was "on leave" from her teaching duties. He could not specify whether it was paid or unpaid.

Her state teaching license could be revoked if she is convicted or fired, said state education department spokesman Ron Gough. If that happens, her name would be entered on a national registry, which could affect her chances of employment in other states.

"I don't know how we would have ascertained the potential problems that occurred," Harter said. Federal and state criminal background checks on prospective teachers already are required, he said.

"Clearly, this is a devastating blow to the Brandywine School District, because we have a trust with our families and when a teacher acts inappropriately that breaches the trust," Harter said.

Robert J. Shoop, Kansas State University professor of educational law, said sexual exploitation of students by teachers is far more prevalent than most people realize.

"Between 5-10 percent of all students have had some inappropriate behavior with teachers," said Shoop, author of "Sexual Exploitation in Schools: How to Spot It and Stop It." A U.S. Department of Education report issued in 2004 cited similar figures.

"Although the vast majority of teachers are competent, caring and ethical people, some are not and take advantage of their position of trust," he said.

Shoop said most predators fall into two categories: those who consciously seek out coaching and teaching opportunities because that's where the kids are, and those who have poor ethical standards and boundary issues and think of the students as their peers.

"When they cross the line, they get themselves into a courting relationship and become infatuated," he said.

District informs parents

Claymont PTA president Melanie Mask said the news saddened and stunned parents at the school.

Tuesday, the school district sent a letter advising parents that a team of counselors, psychologists and social workers would be available to help any student having problems coping with the situation.

"We're trying to respect the families' opportunity to discuss any details that come out in the news with the kids," said district psychologist Jeff Roth. "We have tried to explain to them in a way that they could understand that there was serious inappropriate behavior with the teacher."

Harter said a temporary teacher would be assigned to Holt's class and the district would recruit a "high-quality teacher" as soon as possible to fill the remaining portion of the school year.

Jim Keith, whose 11-year-old daughter was in Holt's homeroom, said the girl has sought help from a counselor.

"She feels very betrayed and mad," Keith said. "She knows she's in jail for doing something bad."

Keith said his son was in Holt's class two years ago and they had so much confidence in her that he asked that his daughter be assigned to her class. "This is one of our most favorite teachers, one of the teachers who we trusted," he said. "We're all shocked."

Mask, the PTA president, said she was "freaked out and saddened." She described Holt as friendly with her students and said she wanted to be the center of attention in the classroom.

"The kids were drawn to her," she said. "She tried to be up on the latest phrases the kids use and tried to be one of them. She just seemed immature to me, like she wanted to be a kid."

Taylor Davis, 14, who was in Holt's homeroom, recalled how the teacher wouldn't crack down on rule infractions, such as students having untucked shirttails or eating candy during class.

"She was like the best teacher in the whole school," she said.

Teacher accused of sex abuse, giving piercings

Authorities are encouraging parents of McHenry West High School students to talk to their children about a teacher accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old male pupil and performing nipple piercings on two girls.

"You want parents to discuss it with their children," said McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren. "If there is another victim, or another witness, we would want to talk with those folks."

Laura E. Sieradzki, 32, of the 800 block of Sayles Drive in Palatine, is accused of criminal sexual assault and aggravated criminal sexual abuse -- felonies with possible sentences of four to 15 years, said McHenry County State's Attorney Louis Bianchi.

She also is charged with two counts of piercing the body of a minor and three counts of delivering alcohol to a minor.

In March, Sieradzki, a special-education teacher, performed oral sex on a 17-year-old student from the McHenry school in a car outside a party in Wonder Lake and supplied alcohol to teens at the party, Nygren said. Also in March, she did body piercing on two students, ages 16 and 17, Nygren said.

The probe was set in motion by e-mails suggesting inappropriate behavior by a teacher. A school resource police officer alerted the sheriff's office, Nygren said.

Sieradzki has been placed on paid leave, said District 156 Supt. Phil Hintz. "We take it very seriously," he said. "We'll start the week making sure we stay in close touch with students and families to make sure their needs are met."

Sieradzki will be arraigned Thursday, Bianchi said. She was free after posting 10 percent of a $200,000 bail, he said. She did not return a call for comment.

A middle-school teacher accused of having sex with at least five boys was fired and remained in jail Thursday after she refused to speak with police about the charges, authorities said.

Police began investigating Allenna Williams Ward, 23, after school officials in Clinton recovered a note containing inappropriate messages, police said.

Ward, who is married, had sexual encounters in the past three months with the 14- and 15-year-old boys at the school, at a motel, in a park and behind a restaurant, according to arrest warrants.

Some of the victims were students at Bell Street Middle School, where Ward taught, authorities said.

Defense attorney Donald Hocker declined to talk about the case Thursday, according to a woman who answered the phone at his office.

School officials were meeting with parents Thursday evening.

Clinton Public Safety Director John Thomas said it was a difficult time for the district. "Teachers are supposed to be role models as well as being those people who take care of and protect our children," Thomas said.

Ward, who was fired Wednesday, is charged with criminal sexual conduct with a minor and lewd acts on a minor, according to arrest warrants.

Clinton, a town of about 10,000 people, is about 60 miles northwest of Columbia.

Last year, an elementary school teacher in school district neighboring Clinton was charged with having sex with an 11-year-old male student.

A trial date for Wendie A. Schweikert has not yet been scheduled.

If convicted and she receives the maximum sentence, she could spend the rest of her life behind bars. Ward is being held on a $110,000 bond.

As authorities stormed into a middle school office to arrest an alleged meth-dealing principal inside, they found an even more surprising scene inside. Sources said 50-year-old John Acerra, of Allentown, was naked and watching gay pornography when they arrived at Nitschmann Middle School in Bethlehem to arrest him on Tuesday.

Acerra also had sex toys, drugs, cash and a pipe in his school office when authorities stormed his office, the sources added.

He remained jailed on $200,000 bail Thursday night, police said.

After the bust, one of his neighbors said they still couldn't believe the whole situation.

"It's pretty sad if you're supposed to be the principal of children that you're suppose to be molding," the woman said. "Maybe not be a hero but someone a child could look up to. To do that, it's pretty disgusting."

After learning of Acerra's alleged drug dealing, police sent an informant -- who said the principal sold meth to them from his school office in the past -- police moved fast to make an arrest because it was allegedly happening on school grounds.
