The Overfriendly Concierge
I've been thinking of tackling this project for some time now...It seems like a huge undertaking. Here are a few:

The Rain Parade "I look around"
Minutemen "Dr. wu" (although it might need to be discounted it since its a remake)
Green on Red "Gravity talks"...
Pixies "Here Comes Your Man"
Replacements "Johnny's Gonna Die"
Camper van Beethoven "Take the Skinheads bowling"
Agent Orange "Bloodstains"
Iggy Pop "Repoman"
Tears For Fears "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" (gay band, but I can't deny this song...)
Psychedelic Furs "All That Money Wants"
Sonic Youth "Teen Age Riot"
Flipper "Ever"

So now where do I go from here?
The Overfriendly Concierge
I just googled 100 best songs of the 1980s and I came to a list by VH1. There were only 3 songs on the entire list that might even have a chance of making my list:
"867-5309/Jenny" by Tommy Tutone,
"Cars" by Gary Numan
"I Ran" by A flock of Seagulls.

I doubt if I put any "metal" on my list...maybe a metallica tune...maiden, priest were both ok and I liked me some ozzy too, but it was all a bit too teenagery for me--even when I was a teenager.
As far aas R&B goes, I like some stuff from the 70s, but it all got a bit too comercial for my taste by the 80s...
Guns and Roses are hard Rock, not metal, I know. Same goes for AC/DC--who probablly deserve to have a song on my list...

"Come On Eileen" easily belongs on any top 80s list.

No, they are both fine songs, but they are both a bit like elevator music to me. I hear them, but they really just dont do anything for me...

Think my top 100 of the 80's would have about 40 Smiths songs in. Not my favourite decade to be fair.

Boys of Summer is superb, actually, it takes a special song to have pop-punk and eurotrance covers not embarass it.

THat's a smart move...was there any R&B or country from the 80s even worth listening to? Maybe some in the early 80s I imagine. I dont know though...not really in my wheelhouse...

A metallica song or a guns and roses song may slip into the Top 100, but I dont see any other 80s "metal" getting anywhere close to the list...Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Maiden, Priest and Metallica made my list.
Maximum Jack
Oh, and G'n'R, but I don't really think of them as Metal.
The Overfriendly Concierge
I'm thinking of replacing 'Dr Wu" with "political song for michael jackson"...Ideally I would rather not have two songs or more by any one band/artist...but if I cant get 100 songs by various artists, then I might start double dippin...
The Overfriendly Concierge
I'm having a hard time finding any worthy songs from '86 to '89...
Any suggestions??
Angrimorfee
I have to agree that Maximum Jack has a smart groove going with that 15-discer there...

That era of music ,Conceirge, is pretty dismal...I think the 90s started in 1988... rolleyes.gif

both this and your much longer list are incredible
wish I had someone like you around to show me the way when I was 13 and listening to linkin park and limp bizkit
Someone should start one of these threads for the 90's..it might be nostalgia talking but there were some killer rap and pop singles in that decade

not so much with the rock though...blergh at korn and associated acts

p.s i went to the same highschool as the church like twenty years later i doubt i would have ever found out if not for a awesome teacher we had with hip taste in music who told us all we should follow in there footsteps and become great artists smile.gif

...sigh...

Consistently saddened to read what people think is worthwhile, musically, from the '80s. Around here, anyway. Some of that '80s production is hard to bear now, but good songs are good songs - the recording's just one document; not really the same as the song, itself. I guess people like what they like and what was true then isn't relevant now, but I have to believe had most of you been there, you'd understand why Jane's Addiction, REM, U2, Peter Gabriel and Nirvana, to say nothing of hip hop, crossing over from the college/urban charts to mainstream radio was such a breath of fresh air. It amazes me the number of people nostalgic for fucking Whitesnake and Bon Jovi and Poison. That stuff was inescapable and false and boring as hell. What a kick in the teeth to read people on the SOMB hating on Nirvana b/c of what major labels did with the alt-rock "revolution." Not at all sure how Cobain's responsible for Linkin Park, but that seems to be the thinking in these parts.

Feel the same way about that comment on '90s rock above: Most of what I liked in the '90s was either "alt" or rock, yet I managed to hear plenty of great music w/o ever making concessions to Nu-metal or corporate alt crap.
MidnightChild2
Doubtless there was the odd good rock album during the 90's ... but most of the ones i can think of borrowed too heavily from past decades styles pavement = the fall for example

(that being said i LOVE pavement )

I agree that all those bands you mention are fantastic and deserving of far more praise than they get around these parts

And yeah nirvana gets way too much blame for the creeds, nickelbacks of the world
I'd lay the blame more at the feet of Pearl Jam and shitty nameless bands whose infulences began and ended with those bands described in " our band could be your life "

( those bands are awesome , but not as the totality of ones infulences)

Man I hope you don't like the Decemberists, Vampire Weekend et al after this statement. Can't imagine a worse time for recycled music than in indie of the last decade. Even those bands I love from these last ten years - The Hold Steady - are fairly shameless about being derivative.

Anyway, rock/pop has always been cannibalism. Borrowing from the past is what it does. Faulting Pavement for aping The Fall (a fascinating comparison for a band who self identified as REM fans, BTW) is to pretty much not understand what you're listening to or why, imo.

Nah trust me i'm no fan of the two bands you just mentioned or all the post-punk ripoff bands that have plagued this decade. (interpol are particulary guilty of this )

Yeah undoubtely rock has a inherent theft aspect to all of it's greatest works ... its when that theft becomes so blatant as to rob the listener of any enjoyment besides " spotting the reference " that it gets stale
(the horrors are a recent example)
I think you'll find no less a authority than mark e smith has called out pavement for " ripping off " fall so i'm obviously not the only one who thinks that'
pavement was probs a bit of a bad example though , i was more thinking along the lines of oasis and blur than anything else ( though again i enjoy those bands somewhat as well)
And i'm not sure where the " not understanding " what i'm listening to comment comes into things .. is that because you feel i am incorrect in connecting the fall and pavement ? or that im failing to appreciate that theft is a integral part of what makes pavement great?

No, it's more that I tend to be a knee jerk reactionary asshole where dissent's concerned. It isn't that I want to "win" arguments so much as utterly annihilate my opponent.

Sorry.

Ha fair enough.

I'm having a hard time finding any worthy songs from '86 to '89...
Any suggestions??

Seriously?

1989:

MidnightChild2
I like to think 89 was a bettr year musically then it probably was in reality ... mostly because that was the year i was born
spiritofeden
these songs came out in 1989, so yeah, it was a good year.

The Overfriendly Concierge
If any cure song makes it, it will probablly be between days or the forest...
Stone roses might have any outside shot of making the list...
Prince, I highly doubt it. Never been a fan, although I can stomach rasberry berret and little red corvette...
I've already put a Pixies song on my list...
the smiths= meh...morrisey's voice really makes me want to punch a goth
"under th milky way" is a good song, I'm not sure if it will make the list though, that bagpipe solo toward the end sorta ruins it for me...

For anyone interested, I put together a 25-song compilation for 1984 (I never did zip those 15 80s discs, drat!). I think there is a little overlap. You can find it here:

wish I had someone like you around to show me the way when I was 13 and listening to linkin park and limp bizkit

I just want to reiterate what a great comp this is. I'm slowly finding more and more great 80's stuff all the time thanks to stuff like this. I also wanted to let you know I'll be using a few of the tracks from your Kiss Me I'm Irish comps for my St. Paddy's Day radio show, so cheers for that.

80s Ozzy doesnt really resonate with me other than some vague memories I have of riding the bus in hgh school listening to some pimply faced bandana wearing Def Lepard wannabe's blasting "crazy train" from their ghetto blaster that was pasted with motely crue stickers...

Grabbing the bonus disk - props on Danny&Dusty, that's a great record. Not sure "Jockey Full of Bourbon" qualifies even as proto-alt. country, but I'll listen in context before I pounce.

Yeah, it's a stretch, but it fit better on the bonus disc, to be sure.

It flowed, and the guitar is in the ballpark. It's just those maracas or whatever they are. It didn't throw me as much as The Connells' Morrisey-isms. But hey, Ryan Adams & David Rawlings are both Smiths fans.

note to self - listen to these upon having chance at home...look nice - and kinda timely as they consist of a lot of albums I bought but didn't necessarily replace ever during the cd or digital era.

Appreciate the feedback, and yeah, the Connells were another stretch-- I don't think they had quite found their voice yet on the first album. I still really like that song, but I'm a huge Smiths fan.
