i always feel like this band could kick it up a gear and stay there for longer live. their peaks are incredible. but the lows are such a bore.

however, james murphy gets beaucoup points for calmly encouraging people to simply enjoy the moment instead of worrying about documenting it. i couldn't agree more.

i found the show tonight to be killer pretty much straight through with very few lags. i came in expecting it to sort of be an alright show and left overly pleased. i think it's safe to say this was the best show i've seen in 2010...

Setlist (for those interested):

Pow Pow
Daft Punk is Playing at My House
All I Want
All My Friends
I Can Change
Tribulations
Movement
Yeah

I could have gone for Dance Yrself Clean, but this was a pretty great set, and Murphy was clearly enjoying himself. Holy Ghost! were great too.

Guess people can't get enough boring blues rock without any bass.

clearly you've not heard the new album...

they're touring with a bassist & keyboard player this summer too

My mistake. I'm not sure it's enough to win me over.

The new Black Keys album is fucking awesome, and yes, that ought to have been headlined/given more than 7.7. Not a band I've particularly been interested in much previously, either.

Band of Horses weren't in the headline because their new one is dead boring and it got a 5.3.

"One Touch" is definitely my favorite song of the year so far.

This song is relentless.

Doesn't this one remind anyone of NIN's "Closer", production-wise? I mean, in a good way. I know a lot of this album seems to be in direct homage to his influences (Eno in particular), but that's one that consistently sticks out for me. Of course, I haven't actually listened to "Closer" in a really, really long time.

at this point im going to assume they will never play Dance Yrself Clean, One Touch, or You Wanted A Hit live.

Good show. Last minute of All My Friends was one of the loudest minutes I've ever spent at Metro.

Ditto on all comments. I couldn't tell you the last time I was so drenched after a show. I was up at 7 to start moving before going to work. Not a good way to start a day off after getting in close to 2.

Also, i'm not sure what lags Mags speaks of. I thought the show was pretty much a nonstop assault of energy. The section i was standing in on the right side of the stage towards the front went absolutely nuts for 'All My Friends.' I was jumping up and down and singing with complete strangers. It was really one of those moments where everyone was caught up and just having a blast. Definitely something I'll take away from last night's gig.

And now that i've had some time to decompress and think about it, i honestly think i can rate last night's show as one of the best i've ever been to.

I thought "Drunk Girls" was pretty flat, but everything else was great. Agreed on "All My Friends" being a highlight. It felt like everyone in the room's spirits soared at once.

So you don't want to see my pictures? Kidding. I took a few, but I loved that he said this. People are getting ridiculous with their cell phone pictures and videos. I saw you, no magnets, on my way out, but it was really crowded and my friend had a broken foot, so I didn't stop to say hi.

We had seats up in the VIP section which was really cool for watching the show, but not for dancing. That's probably why I thought it was a great show, but I didn't have quite as much fun as at previous shows. Well that and the fact that I had a headache. Damn pre-show sangria.

Looking down at the floor at this moment was pretty great. Everyone was going crazy.

i thought "drunk girls" into "yr city's a sucker" and especially "new york, i love you" were a few notches below the rest of the set. that being said, that stretch from "all my friends" through "losing my edge" was straight-up bananas.
Hans Christian Anderson
what does the melodious synth line that appears in the intro and during the chorus of "i can change" sound like? it seems ridiculously familiar, but i can't place it. the closest i can get is the safety dance.
UselessRocker
How is he getting away with not playing "Dance Yrself Clean" and "One Touch" live? Those songs could and should be set highlights.

NY was the closer, i have no problem with a comedown track. and it was definitely the sole exception.

yeah i'm sad that i probably wont get a dance yrself clean this weekend.

i'll chime in real quick here...just saw them for the first time last night. wow. do it if you can and haven't. or if you have, they seem like they're at the top of their game right now.

A recent live clip:

ahahahhahaha

Awful.

I feel terrible for people who have never seen a real rock show, and thus mistakenly consider this a quality experience:

This is what is known as "weak sauce". It's not even worth going to these shows for free. You have been fooled, suckered into parting with your cash and time. For reference purposes, I'd like to show you what actual talented stage performers look and sound like:

i will add the caveat that the TIH songs were my personal lowlights of the set, but....i imagine they still just need time to grow on me. LOVED us v. them, tribulations, yeah, movement, daft punk, etc. basically the songs that were either abrasive and/or fast and/or 10+ minutes long.

and monty i believe you know i'm the biggest gillian welch fan on this board. some folks can like both groups or sounds or whatever, it aint all or nuthin'.
DrAftershave
saw them last night at the hollywood palladium. it was an awesome show. we were all moshing in the front of the stage throughout the last third of the concert.

referring to Montana's comment, what does it say about me who bought a ticket to see LCD Soundsystem and a $300 ground floor ticket to see the Roger Waters' "The Wall" concert when he comes out here in november?
Duff.
You like schlubby white dudes.

how in the fuck do people take this "band" seriously.

LCD Soundsystem will be remembered as the Flock of Seagulls of the 00's, except they never had a song this good.

I was at the Pomona show, and the handful of songs they played from This is Happening were all great. Particularly "I Can Change." But the show was just plain amazing. "Daft Punk" and "Tribulations" were off the hook.

I read some chatter from someone who spoke to Murphy at one of their shows that part of the reason they aren't playing a set list heavy on TIH songs is twofold: 1. Dance Yrself Clean and One Touch are trickier to sequence live and 2. they didn't want to play a set of exclusively 8-10 minute songs.

My instinct is that they'll probably do another lap maybe later this year or in early '11 and switch it up a bit. But I have nothing to base that on. Just a hunch.
Hans Christian Anderson
yeah i hadda/havva similar hunch as well. and i will be there for round 2 (hopefully). if anything, that set last week made me a true believer in this band as opposed to an admirer, which i've been for most of their existence (a fan, but not doling out the level of accolades/etc. they get from the press/more feverish fans, etc. ). would love to see them do DYC live...

Makes sense. The long-song thing fucks up live shows a lot. Especially if you see LCD at a festival. It's still fun, but you know you're only getting maybe 6 songs, because of all the 8-minute jams.

Also, "Telecommunication" and especially "Space Age Love Song" are both easily 90 times better than "I Ran". Using "Flock of Seagulls" as a 'haha-remember-that-band-and-that-guy's-hair' punchline went out in like 1998, after it was used in The Wedding Singer.

Was it the original line-up when you saw them or was it one of those "the lead singer has recruited a few people to play the songs" deals? I vaguely remember VH1 doing a show years ago where they were reuniting '80s bands and Flock was one of them. I remember thinking they sounded really rusty and pretty bad, but in their defense they probably hadn't played in over a decade.

"Wishing" is alright, but despite its overplayed one-hit-wonder status, I actually prefer "I Ran" to that one. I always forget how much I like it, until it shows up on somebody's '80s mix or something. It's all about the opening riff and that little breakdown halfway thru.

Oh, it was definitely the "lead singer + 3 other guys" model. But I thought they sounded pretty good....and LOUD. The "other guys" added a bit of energy, too. Hey may have just been making money to pay the bills, but it was pretty enjoyable all around.

We now return you to your LCD Soundsystem thread, already in progress....
monotony
So I suppose this is old news to most of you. But I saw this band for the first time last night and I don't think I've ever had so much fun at a show. Loads of energy, riotous bass. "Yeah" was so amazing that I forgave them for not playing my favourite ("someone great"). Montana has never been so off the mark.

Also they said they planned to keep touring for another 1-2 years and were going to come back to Australia at least once, if not twice, in that time. Hooray!
the dude
bloody well better come to more than just melb and sydders then.
raggedglory
this is the kind of band you will have a lot more fun seeing them live, i tried watching the coachella and the pitchfork broadcasts and they bored me to death. Disc ain't bad though. Sounds better loud (though doesn't ALL music sound better that way?) + drunk.
