I was coming in here to post something about "North American Scum." Which is also a goofy song with kind of stupid lyrics. And was the first single from the last album.

Guys... this is LCD Soundsystem we're talking about. Before "All My Friends" was proclaimed the anthem of our generation due to its ability to tug at the heartstrings of poorly dressed disillusioned white 20somethings all across the United States, James Murphy was known for writing what were more or less excellently produced novelty songs. Remember those days?
Anyway, I kind of like it.

i'm fine with a goofy/fun single, but this song for me is just a bit too one dimensional (and i still think the backing vocals are annoying... they remind me of something off Licensed to Ill)

Extremely smarmy, jokey lyrics set to an overly blatant homage to a Velvet Underground song, it's like a parody of LCD Soundsystem that Montana would record. I know James Murphy can be a bit silly but this song crosses the line into novelty. At this rate, the next album he releases will be preceded by a joke single called "All Preppies Must Die!" based around the melody from a Talking Heads song with lyrics that constantly namedrop Brian Eno.

yeah this song sounds pretty awesome actually. i don't know why murphy would consider retiring after this i think he's getting better. he's definitely making strides as a vocalist. this sounds nothing like the vu to me. the call and response flow is pretty damn close to white light white heats but musically it's hardly simliar. im hearing more glam like roxy music and cars/devo new wave with murphy's lyrical persona on top. and how can you not love the last minute of this?

according to a few people who have heard the full album, 'Drunk Girls' is easily one of the albums worst songs.
but here's an interesting track by track review:
http://thequietus.com/articles/03969-lcd-s...-track-by-trackQUOTE
If 2005's LCD Soundsystem was a set of great tracks that didn't quite know what they were doing together, on 2007’s Sound of Silver their cute tics were superseded by irresistible emotional depth, sharper songwriting and compulsive rhythm; the near-universal praise spoke for itself. So what next, when you’ve nothing left to prove? Prove it again, differently. Usually when a band tells you their latest, yet-to-be-aired effort is “the best album we’ve ever made” it’s code for “we’ve lost it completely, but at that mega-volume playback in the expensive studio it felt like we’d got away with it”. This isn’t one of those records. The third, still-untitled LCD Soundsystem album contains a run of heavyweight hits that compress the best elements of their previous work, topped and tailed by some intriguing slow-burners. Parts of it sound misshapen or half-baked on a first spin; but after a few listens, it may take medical intervention to stop you playing it daily. It's great, but not quite gold.
Shackleton's Great Adventure
Mar 26 2010, 09:13 AM
outside of the 'powpowpow' beginning that track sounds good too. it seems like he's integrating his singing more fluidly into the songs. and the "emotional depth" angle of sound of silver is overstated, there's only 3 songs on there that could be considered to have emotional depth. something like "drunk girls" is more representative of his style.
solace
Mar 26 2010, 09:17 AM
overstated maybe, but Someone Great & All My Friends were easily the 2 best songs on the record for me, and a big part of the reason i went from only liking 2-3 songs on the proper disc of the S/T (the 2nd disc was just the singles that proceeded the LP, which many were great mind you), to liking all but 2-3 songs on Sound of Silver.
at least stuff like North American Scum or Daft Punk is clever/humorous to me, i don't find the lyrics to 'Drink Girls' too much of either unfortunately, maybe i'm just old.

i don't think this song is as deadpan sarcastic as daft punk. clearly hes having fun with the subject but there's sincerity to the lyrics here too, even the humor. and his delivery is so giddy and contagious, i think it's one of his best vocals... likin this song a lot.

Yeah, this song is nowhere near as bad as people were saying yesterday. I dig it. I mean, I'm assuming the entire album isn't filled with songs in the same vein as "Drunk Girls." If that's the case I figure this tune will fit nicely in the scope of a full album of LCD songs---some of which I'm sure resemble "All My Friends" more than this.

its OK, i like it less than NAS, which i actually liked a lot (even more than all my friends, gasp!, not as much as someone great though). my main problem w/ it is that the hook sounds way too like something from license to kill as solace said.
