Gareth is right. A debate about ysi-ing in this thread is like a stapler in some jelly.

Paul Butterfield Blues Band - Paul Buttersfield Blues Band

Year: 1965

US Chart Position: #123

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #20 (year), #153 (decade), #893 (all-time)

AMG Says: "Outputting styles adopted from Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters among other blues greats, Butterfield became one of the first white singers to rekindle blues music through the course of the mid-'60s [...] The result was a wonderfully messy and boisterous display of American-styled blues, with intensity and pure passion derived from every bent note. In front of all these instruments is Butterfield's harmonica, beautifully dictating a mood and a genuine feel that is no longer existent, even in today's blues music."

US Chart Position: #22

UK Chart Position: #20

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #66 (year), #603 (decade), #2238 (all-time)

AMG Says: "Few rockers have been as willing as Young to lay themselves bare before their audience, and Time Fades Away ranks with the bravest and most painfully honest albums of his career -- like the tequila Young was drinking on that tour, it isn't for everyone, but you may be surprised by its powerful effects."

Elton John - Honky Chateau

Year: 1972

US Chart Position: #1

UK Chart Position: #2

Charting Singles: "Rocket Man" (#6 US, #2 UK), "Honky Cat" (#8 Pop / #6 AC US, #31 UK)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #32 (year), #290 (decade), #903 (all-time)

AMG Says: "While Taupin's lyrics aren't much more comprehensible than before, John delivers them with skill and passion, making them feel more substantial than they are. But what makes Honky Chateau a classic is the songcraft, and the way John ties disparate strands of roots music into distinctive and idiosyncratic pop -- it's one of the finest collections of mainstream singer/songwriter pop of the early '70s."

The Monkees - Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd.

Year: 1967

US Chart Position: #1

UK Chart Position: #5

Charting Singles: "Pleasant Valley Sunday" (#3 US, #11 UK) / "Words" (#11 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "One of their better efforts, featuring the double-sided hit "Pleasant Valley Sunday"/"Words," and some of their best album tracks, like "She Hangs Out," "Star Collector," and "Cuddly Toy," the last of which was one of the first Harry Nilsson songs to be covered by a major artist. As usual, some of the country-rockers and half-baked psychedelic tunes are tedious, though a couple tracks are notable for featuring some of the first uses of a Moog synthesizer on a rock record."

John Cale - Vintage Violence

Year: 1970

US Chart Position: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "Cale has rarely sounded this well-adjusted on record, though his lyrical voice is usually a bit too cryptic to stand up to a literal interpretation of his words. If Cale wanted to clear out a separate and distinct path for his solo career, he certainly did that with Vintage Violence, though it turned out to be only one of many roads he would follow in the future"

Year: 1969

UK Chart Position: #26

Charting Singles: "Evil Ways" (#9 US), "Jingo" (#56 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #40 (year), #169 (decade), #969 (all-time)

AMG Says: "His first record, as with the best fusion, created something a little different than just a mixture -- a new style that, surprisingly remains all his own. Granted that Latin music has seeped into the mainstream since, but why aren't Van Halen and Metallica listening to this? Where they simmer, Santana boils over."

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #36 (year), #326 (decade), #1057 (all-time)

AMG Says: "On For the Roses, Joni Mitchell began to explore jazz and other influences in earnest. As one might expect from a transitional album, there is a lot of stylistic ground explored [...] More than a bridge between great albums, this excellent disc is a top-notch listen in its own right."

Charting Singles: "Bloody Well Right" (#35 US), "Dreamer" (#13)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #32 (year), #345 (decade), #1142 (all-time)

AMG Says: "With Crime of the Century, Supertramp established themselves as one of the handful of progressive rock acts that could sell albums and have hit singles. Stripping away the long-winded excesses of their first two albums, Crime of the Century featured tighter, more melodic songs, as evidenced by the singles "Bloody Well Right" and "Dreamer.""

The Beach Boys - Sunflower

Year: 1970

US Chart Position: #151

UK Chart Position: #29

Charting Singles: "Add Some Music to Your Day" (#64 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #32 (year), #229 (decade), #665 (all-time)

AMG Says: "After Reprise rejected what was to be their debut album for the label, the Beach Boys re-entered the studio to begin work on what would become a largely different set of songs. The results signaled a creative rebirth for the band, a return to the beautiful harmonies and orchestral productions of their classic mid-'60s material. Though the songwriting didn't quite reach the high quality of "California Girls" or "God Only Knows," Sunflower showed the Beach Boys truly working as a band, and doing so better than they ever had in the past (or would in the future)."

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #18 (year), #83 (decade), #396 (all-time)

AMG Says: "The strength of the performance is in the improvisation. When it worked, as it does on "Spoonful," they were brilliant. When it didn't, as on "Traintime" and "Toad," the band became excess incarnate. The studio disc contained their second Top Ten single, Jack Bruce's "White Room," as well as a stunning cover of Albert King's "Born Under a Bad Sign." Other tracks, particularly those written by Ginger Baker, do not hold up."

UK Chart Position: #20

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #41 (year), #383 (decade), #1296 (all-time)

AMG Says: "What's more, this lineup quickly established itself as a powerful performing unit working in a more purely experimental, less jazz-oriented vein than its immediate predecessor. "Outer Limits music" was how one reviewer referred to it, mixing Cross' demonic fiddling with shrieking electronics, Bill Bruford's astounding dexterity at the drum kit, Jamie Muir's melodic and usually understated percussion, Wetton's thundering (yet melodic) bass, and Fripp's guitar, which generated sounds ranging from traditional classical and soft pop-jazz licks to hair-curling electric flourishes."

Year: 1967

US Chart Position: #67

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: "Walk Away Renee" (#5 US), "Pretty Ballerina" (#15 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "The Left Banke's debut was a terrific if largely unrecognized effort of classy baroque pop, featuring entirely original material. The two hit title tracks were standouts, but nearly every other cut was in the same league, the glowing arrangements intertwining with their beautiful harmonies, at times rocking fairly hard. Every song was reissued on the There's Gonna Be a Storm anthology, making it unnecessary to locate a pricey copy of the original vinyl."

UK Chart Position: #6

Charting Singles: "Oh Well (Part 1)" (#55 US, #2 UK)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #42 (year), #180 (decade), #1048 (all-time)

AMG Says: "This Peter Green-led edition of the Mac isn't just an important transition between their initial blues-based incarnation and the mega-pop band they became, it's also their most vital, exciting version [...] Then Play On is a reminder of how pervasive and powerful Green's influence was on Mac's originality and individual stance beyond his involvement. US Chart Position: #13 Pop, #1 Jazz

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #27 (year), #200 (decade), #566 (all-time)

AMG Says: "It had all of the sensibilities of jazz, particularly in the way it wound off into long improvisations, but its rhythms were firmly planted in funk, soul, and R&B, giving it a mass appeal that made it the biggest-selling jazz album of all time (a record which was later broken). Jazz purists, of course, decried the experiments at the time, but Head Hunters still sounds fresh and vital decades after its initial release, and its genre-bending proved vastly influential on not only jazz, but funk, soul, and hip-hop."

David Axelrod - Songs of Experience

Year: 1969

US Chart Position: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "After the modicum of success he'd experienced with his debut, Song of Innocence, set to William Blake's epic suite of poems, composer, arranger, and producer David Axelrod turned to the British poet's Songs of Experience for inspiration in creating his follow-up album. Using eight of Blake's poems, Axelrod composed a suite that was less rock in its aim and more pop- and jazz-oriented in places, but overall a more orchestral work."

Charting Singles: "Eighteen" (#18 US), "Caught in a Dream" (#94 US)

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #35 (year), #315 (decade), #1019 (all-time)

AMG Says: "But like Alice Cooper's other albums from the early '70s, it was an incredibly consistent listen from beginning to end. The garage rocker "Caught in a Dream," as well as the ass-kicking "Long Way to Go," and a pair of epics -- the Doors-esque "Black Juju" and the eerie "Ballad of Dwight Fry" -- showed that Alice was easily in league with other high-energy Detroit bands of the era (MC5, Stooges). Love It to Death was the first of a string of classic releases from the original Alice Cooper group."

Year: 1972

US Chart Position: n/a

UK Chart Position: n/a

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: n/a

AMG Says: "Fricke called this album a "mass for the heart" and that aspect can be heard most succinctly on the melancholy "Abschied" and the gossamer-fragile "Segnung," which blend an austere hymnal sensibility with a more mystical vibe. Julian Cope has said that Hosianna Mantra sounds like it was made in a "cosmic convalescent home" -- an excellent description underscoring the timeless, healing quality of this music, which is far removed from the everyday world and yet at one with it."

US Chart Position: #55

UK Chart Position: #1

Charting Singles: n/a

Acclaimed Music Ranking: #70 (year), #595 (decade), #2178 (al-time)

AMG Says: "So, there are interesting moments scattered throughout the record, and the work that initially seems so impenetrable winds up being Atom Heart Mother's strongest moment. That it lasts an entire side illustrates that Pink Floyd was getting better with the larger picture instead of the details, since the second side just winds up falling off the tracks, no matter how many good moments there are. This lack of focus means Atom Heart Mother will largely be for cultists, but its unevenness means there's also a lot to cherish here."

While these bands just picked up where Sgt. Pepper's left off, Os Mutantes made music that had no point of reference until almost 30 years later.
